It’s -32C in the Old Village of Mt. Tremblant at 8:15 A.M.
In our books, that definitely qualifies as “Really Frosty”.
The Skiing will technically be very fine, but...
People might ask if you’d have to be some sort of Lunatic
to be outside in these kinds of temp’s? Based on clues
contained in this photo, we’d say maybe only half.
The Other Half is the side of all dedicated Skiers and Boarders
who never hesitate to take on the challenges, and even thrive
on the adventure that comes with Winter Alpine Snow Sports
that by their very definition, mean effectively coping with any
of the temp. related possibilities included with the use of the word
“Winter”.
In this case, as in 99% of all similar “Polar Vortex” events, we are not alone.
The abnormally low temps are originating from Siberia and extend over the
North Pole to about Chicago in the West, right over to the East Coast, then
all the way down to Northern Florida.
CNN is currently reporting that almost 50 Million North-Eastern people
are under “Wind Chill Advisories”.
Even the U.K. and Europe are experiencing unusually cool, snowy weather.
Good thing we’re at a Ski Resort. With a bit of focused preparation
we can actually use this in at least two ways. Firstly we can be outside
and enjoy our Winter Alpine Snow Sports, secondly, this period of Super
Chill will definitely enhance the stored frost refrigerant within the conical
mass of the Mountain, so it will contribute to the durability of seasonal
quality. Admittedly, the second use takes long range visualization to
identify benefits from, but for those who invested in a February or March
Family Ski Holiday, this is a HUGE Insurance Policy for “Excellent”, whenever
you arrive.
Still In Effect From Yesterday.
Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
It was a bit too cool yesterday to have bare fingers out for much outdoor
photography so this below is of Trail #79, Sissy Schuss, is from Christmas
Day. In a way, it’s good to have this one here anyway because it’s a great
illustration of a zone that had relatively little wind exposure, the entire
Versant Nord, North Side Expo Quad Sector.
Very little of the snowfall that arrived above, got moved by the wind, so
Groomed as it was yesterday, it was nothing but smooth, light, dry, fast
and 100% excellent performing natural snow. It should be identical today,
along with virtually all the surrounding sector.
Expert Hors Piste, Sous Bois, Glade Skiers/Boarders will also realize
that Windigo, a local favourite Glade Bump Run that adjacently runs
parallel, has also benefitted with exactly the same fresh accumulations.
As we crossed over from Sissy Schuss Haut, Upper to Fuddle Duddle
Bas, Lower, where Windigo intersects, there was a surprisingly large
traffic flow coming off Windigo. Basically, this was one of those “Sweet
Spots”, out of the way of the wind, and great natural Snow, no wonder
there were a lot of Kidz Of All Ages that were very happy to spend a
big portion of their day in this neighbourhood.
Mountain Crews have Opened Trails at various stages of development
and we want to draw attention to the “Big Bump” format of creating
Snowmaking formed contours shaped by the stationary positioning
of Snow Guns over a Multi-Day accumulation along the Trail Pathway.
This form has been used on a Rotating basis where different years have
alternated the trails it’s utilized on. One very visible example is Versant
Sud, South Side “Erik Guay”. We say “Visible Example” because from
miles around the local area between the Old Village of Mt.Tremblant and
St. Jovite, this trail can clearly be seen. The pic. below is taken from
the Municipal Dock across the bay of Lac Tremblant across from the
Resort Village. The phot was taken at Sunset, so there’s quite a bit of
shadow and contrast that make the “Big Bumps” quite well defined.

It not just “Guts” you need, to be out on cold days,
It’s more importantly “Brains”. To effectively prepare
requires a thoughtful, well planned garment system
that does not need to be super expensive, just super
well sealed.
