4/4/18 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Mid-Eve Apres Ski Edit @ 9:19 P.M.

These Were Actually The Right Skis(Pictured Below) For Today
In The Un-Groomed/Sous Bois, Due To Very Specific Conditions
That Were Optimized By A Soft Camber, Rocker Tip having
sufficient float to stay above a Crust.

We had hoped to get an Apres Ski up earlier, however we were
unavoidably delayed so please accept our apologies.
The Summary Of Today To Begin With Is...

The Groomed were quite good with intermittent thickness
and required sharp attention, the Un-Groomed were not ideal
due to an icy crust and were only functionally navigable with
a very soft ski. A fully cambered Slalom Race Ski would punch
through the Crust on virtually every turn without sufficient tip
floatation and it was near impossible to pull ski tips back up
throughout the crust as the leverage required to break it upwards
was beyond reasonable human capability.

So, if you had soft Rocker Tip Skis, you could go Hors Piste or
Un-Groomed. If you had Cambered Stiff Race Skis, you needed
to stay on the Groomed, and/or, wherever there was enough
Traffic to break up the Crust on Un-Groomed. Fresh Tracks
were not practical in the Un-Groomed or Sous Bois with
Race Skis today. Regardless of that one little difficulty for
us today, the New Snow Accumulation is a very welcome
and greatly appreciated addition to the Base. Eventually
the forces of Spring will overcome the crust, if Traffic doesn’t
first... and everything will blend in quite nicely.

On The Flip Side...

This Is Only One Example Of Where Race Skis Were Excellent:

The Coverage in the Groomed Array is nothing short of spectacular for April 4th.

Carving up a storm in the Groomed is super-easy when the surface
is as well compacted as you see above. You can just about see the
razor-sharp edge grooves above right down the middle, for the
whole length of Beauchemin Bas, Lower. It’s enough to turn your
Quad’s into jello if you do a few Summit-To-Base laps quickly.

There were Vision related Issues because the airborne particles
frequently had a considerable amount of “Wet” in the mix, so
besides frequent wiping, there were times when you could ski
with goggles up. There were also times when vision was no problem
at all, so while we have to acknowledge the inconvenience, it was
both intermittent and temporary and for the most part, easy to
just wipe off, and keep going.

There were some Literally Awesome Tremblant Spooky Views
from the Summit, looking Down....

Once you figured out where the Terrain suited your Equipment, you could
focus on that, and have an Excellent "More Winter Than Spring Day" In April,
at Tremblant!

In the Mean-time... all the "Big Guns” were out in force, ready to
start the Night-Shift Grooming. As we Skied down to Versant Nord
Base Parking for Last Run, you could hear the Machines in action
as they began their work. We suspect it may be an “All Nighter”!

65(*) Open Trails on Versant Sud, South and Versant Nord, North Sectors at #Tremblant .

Imagine About 12 Hours Of This:

We had Hints of what this Snowstorm was going to look like
2 days ago on this Lower North Trail Side shot, taken on
Fuddle Duddle Bas, Lower.

Officially 16cm’s of Fresh, New, Overnight Snowfall...

However... and as usual... The Wind Will Have Shaped Unique Deposits
Of Far Greater, and in some cases where “Wide Open”, there may be
Wind-Blown bare zones that could not retain as much.

The basic wind direction over the past 12 hours of Snowfall has been
Nor-East. This means it was howling almost straight up P’tit Bonheur.

There should be some quite heavy Drift-in throughout the Lowell Thomas
Sector and below, over the Peak of the Expo Sector, where we suspect
you may be able to find deposits of Powder Snow in excess of 25-30cm’s.
These deep deposits are directly related to Topographical Contour Shaping
and will require “Skis On The Snow” to accurately locate.

There is also the possibility of some significant Drift-in over Versant Sud,
South Side Sectors, below the Summit and above the TGV Base Level.
Nansen may have some big Snowy Sides, particularly on the descending
Right hand side, within the “Lee” of the Trail-Side Trees.

Caution On All Initial Explorations Is Necessary Due To Extra Challenge
Fresh Deep Snow Presents. An Additional Complexity is the Humidity
or dampness that may be present because of Close to Zero C temps.
Many, Many “Wild Cards”, but with so much New Snow, we expect most
of those Wild Cards to Be Positive.

You Should Be Able To Do This All Day(?), but in Fresh Snow as well
as any Soft Spring Snow(?)

There is the possibility of a Rainy-Snowy Mix of undetermined proportions.
We think that may be largely confined to the Sud, South, Base Levels,
and that the Summit and Nord, North Sectors may see All Snow. It is
too early to tell for sure, so we could be wrong.

Weather Notes:

Despite the “Mix” potential within the Precipitation forecasts,
we feel there are 2 positive co-factors.
1) The forecast ends with “All Snow” projections.
2) This is for Sud, South Base Level, and at Cooler
Mountain Elevations, there is a much higher probability
of it being “All Snow” at those typically lower temp’s.

Conditions Notes:

Anything is possible. We are projecting all positives though, because
there is just so much newly fallen snow that we feel the net result
can not be anything but good. It may take a day or three to sort out,
groom and generally organize, but Any Season With 520cm’s in the base
is a Great Season and for Experts today is a Powder Day! It may be “Thick”
and it may take some Muscle, but there’s a lot of New Snow out there!

For Beginners, where groomed, it should be very easy sailing
because this kind of Snow packs really well, so we expect Highway
Quality smoothness.

------------ Conditions Caveats -------------

Newly Fallen, Thick, Heavy Snow can present extra challenge.
Beginners and Intermediates should use maximum caution
and total speed control at all times. Any signs of control
impairment should be handled with a default down in steepness
in order to stay safe.

Experts: Tons of New Thick Snow takes Extra Muscle. Be wary
of Fatigue. Sudden Onset Fatigue can cause loss of control.
Use your head and allow extra margins for safe passage.

----------------------------------------------------

Obviously... The most insight will be hindsight in this eve’s Apres Ski.
We will do our best to put a summary Apres Ski up before 8:00 P.M.
for those Regional Tremblant Fans who may have the ability to escape
for tomorrow. Our initial recommendation this morning though, is “Get Ready”.
When this much snow falls, you need to have everything lined up to leave.
What we hope, and are very confident of, is that Apres Ski will simply be
a confirmation.

Page Under All Day Progressive Assembly
As Time And New Snowfall Permit.

If you can get back to Tremblant, just do it...

Statistically(subject to confirmation),
it’s(so far) the third largest Snowfall Accumulation in 20 years?

you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
