Simply Beautiful!
This Is Real, Genuine, Tremblant Today, Insert Noon Update “A”:
Simply Beautiful, but...
How Low Can It Go?
When The Weather Is The News.
We intentionally include “Big Picture” East Coast Weather news
for context now, and for trip planers who may look at this
record at any time in the future, in order to frame the situation
so all readers here understand that Tremblant is not singular in
this, or any other cold weather experience.
What we have above are two of dozens of weather forecasting
models that can be found for the current cyclical pattern that
has seen the southern extent of polar air migration recede and
advance multiple times. A review of recent daily conditions, plus
the near-term forecast, show that this pattern is likely to continue
for some weeks.
Meanwhile, locally...
However, considering it is KKkkkkool all the way down to
around Jacksonville Florida, as a matter of the aforementioned
East Coast Regional Context...
We are not alone.
Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
Deep cold may generate surfaces with higher rates of
friction that you may feel as “Drag” or frontal resistance
on shallow pitches or plateaus.
If the temps rise as forecast, that should either become less,
or disappear altogether mid-morning. From that point forward,
the glide should return to a more resistance-free feel underfoot.
The reason this occurs is that the edges of your skis or board
normally create a molecular thin layer of frictionally generated
water that acts as a lubricant, exactly the same way a skate does
on ice. At -30’s and below, the Laws of Physics come into play
when the ambient temp is low enough that the froward motion
does not make enough frictional heat to do that, so your edges
are missing that very thin layer of lubricant and they are now
riding over the raw granular surface. The Ski-feel of super-cold snow
is often much the same as you might imagine skiing on sand would be.
If you set aside the challenges of dressing to stay warm
for a moment and consider only the skiing experience,
the net effect of super-cool, sand-like, higher resistance
skiing is that you can use the extra resistance to offset
gravity. Steeper runs suddenly become super-easy because
the extra drag holds you back against the pitch angle, and
it can become oddly easy to ski steep trails you would find
very difficult, or trails you might normally not even try.
It’s almost “Spooky” to ski Zig-Zag or Vertige, or Expo
on super-cool days and feel an invisible helpful hand
holding you back from too much speed.
Pictured Below, Zig-Zag and Vertige are the 2 “Y” shape
trails, #2 and #3 from Screen-Left. They are 2 of the steepest
trails at Tremblant, and if the super-cool snow slows you down
a bit on these ones, that’s a good thing!
This Is Real, Genuine, Tremblant Today, Noon Insert Update “B”:
Depending on the levels of internal humidity that can be
effected by wind and overcast as opposed to calmness
and solar exposure at these cold levels, the “Glide” returns
to the equation somewhere between -30 and -25 or so.
Typically, these super-cool temp’s rarely last for more than
a couple of hours at sunrise, so by mid-morning, things
are usually warm enough to return to normal ranges of
glide, not to mention being a lot easier to stay warm.
Two Days Ago We Wrote:
"On a more general note, and as only one option for a cold
weather strategy that you may want to consider for later this week...
We suggest that if you’re not keen on cool, consider a later
morning outset and focus on “Last Run”, versus “First Tracks”
because with the low traffic of mid-Jan. weekdays, there is
exceptional all-day durability in smoothness.
At this time of the season, quite literally, we are usually able
to find fresh corduroy tracks for the entire day, often including
“Last Run”. So, the considerably warmer temps that usually take
quite a good jump up by as early as between 09:30 A.M., to
10:00 A.M., and prevail during the balance of “Open” hours, are far
easier to handle than the initial cold of First Tracks.
Where that really makes sense is if you tend to quit for the day
anytime before official Last Run. In that case, your ski hours per
day may be exactly the same, but by starting later, they are in
a warmer temperature range. We have no idea why some folks
seem “Hell-Bent” on First Tracks, quit at 14:30, and then spend
an hour and a half in the bar whining about cold, when a slight
adjustment can make your whole day way easier."
Technically speaking, the Skiing is going to be excellent
within all respective classes and categories of Open Terrain.
You just have to be ready to handle the temp’s.
The overall outlook for tomorrow is that with more
snow forecast, another grooming cycle, and rising temp’s,
there could be “Best Of Season, So-Far” conditions.

Apres Ski Draft For 1/18/19 Under construct here @ 9:47 P.M.
The basic premise is that Jan.18, 2019 has, in our opinion,
potential to have some excellent “Best Of Season, So-Far”
conditions.
The fortunate, simultaneous, coincidence of synergistic,
principle, co-factors that are specifically beneficial to Alpine
Ski and Snowboard performance, include, but may not be
limited to:
1) Uninterrupted, 13 Multi-day Sustained 24 hr. Sub-Zero Temp’s
at Mountain Elevations.(1 day @ 0 C, Sud, South Resort Base)
2) 43 cm’s of Natural Snowfall in those 13 days.
3) More Natural Snowfall Forecast Overnight 1/18-->19.
4) Light, Single Digit Wind Values During Snowfall Event
should allow new snow to fall and be retained on trails without
being blown off.
5) 13 Nights of Accumulated Grooming Refinement and Optimized Compaction.
6) Another Night-Shift of Grooming Compaction.
7) “Squeaky” Cryogenic, Super-Cool, 100% Snow Base
from 1/17/19.
8) 1/18/19 Rising Temperatures to Daytime High of -7C.
9) Anecdotal Observations frequently referred to in the
topics of this Forum indicate typical increases in softness,
forgiveness, glide, and traction as temperatures rise in within
Sub-Zero C ranges.
10) Very light mid-weekday traffic.
Even the possibility of such significance deserves highlight
for at least 2 reasons:
1) Notice you should “Escape To Ski” tomorrow. Period.
2) The ability to observe and identify this kind of potential
combination for future opportunity.
The amount of, or number of Open Trails is irrelevant to
the concept that what will be Open and Groomed, may
well be near-flawless.
Draft to be expanded as time permits, with default
presentation at 1/18/19 Open Hours.
