2/18/19 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Eve. Apres Ski Edit, Under Progressive Assembly @ 10:24 P.M.

It took a while for the overcast to clear off,
but when it did...

Your Skis Enjoyed An Excellent View On The Way Up Today!

Everything was exactly as good as we expected.

To begin with, the snow surfaces in the groomed were at
very high levels of lateral grip, so confident edging got you
immediate traction that was universally consistent over
the Mountains entire footprint.

There was a bit more friction in the snow than we might have
anticipated, but that only enhanced your sense of control on
steeper pitches where it was very easy to keep almost radical
carving angles without any fears of loosing grip, so you could
just about stand sideways on the outside ski if you had the muscle
to hold the immense centrifugal force you could develop.
That part was truly exciting.

Below: If you look at the track of the outside ski in the arch
from screen-right, down to the centre of the frame immediately
in front of this POV, you will see the evidence of very high grip.
The turning force you could make without any failure, was enough
to turn your quad muscles into jello, and skiing down from the
Duncan entrance to this point on Devils River was a Slalom Racers
Dream of technically thrilling consecutive turns over this trails wonderful
upper rolling contours. Better than any Roller Coaster! It was so much fun
we had to stop, then climb back up a few metres to get a snapshot for the record.
It was only one sample from dozens of similar conditions, so it was not
long before you realized the tremendous thrills you could enjoy almost
anywhere at Tremblant today.

The slight resistance meant some occasional skating strides
on plateaus, but never held us back beyond mere moments,
so when you consider the benefits on the pitches that were
thrilling to actually be able to carve on, the performance balance
was altogether positive.

We must say though, there was a wee bit of “Sting” in the “Zing” of the wind.
We’re not sure why we noticed it so much because by the raw numbers
of relatively low wind speed, and temps were not all that cold, but
none the less, there were some gusting moments when its cooling power
seemed pointedly chilly.

In The Beginning...

The way we understand it, basic portions of Summit access
within this photo were originally cleared in the summer and fall of 1938.

(There’s reason for these history references(**))
Ski Trails of Yesteryear(circa 1930’s 1940’s etc.,) were
sometimes “Boot-Packed” or "Snowshoe-Packed” by
groups of either Ski Enthusiasts or by paid Mountain staff
before the development of industrial grooming or packing
machines. We’ve seen photos of hardy groups of Trail-Blazers
with arms linked, forming a horizontal line that extends across
the width of a trail, all taking co-ordinated steps down the
incline, through a fresh snowfall, in order to very basically
pack the trail surface.

(**)In a sense, that net effect of “People-Packing” may have
been felt on the trails at Tremblant over the past two days because...

It’s been a very busy traffic Weekend.

Considering the 78cm’s of snow that came in less than
a 4 day span just before the weekend, the Ski/Board
traffic of the weekend will have been a component of
working some of the soft, mogul prone tendencies out,
and improving the trail surface density to one degree or
another. This could be especially true where there is either
only periodic grooming, or in Un-groomed trails or open
Hors Piste sectors.

Today may see traffic reductions at around, or shortly after
Noon, as the Holiday long-weekend group gets ready to head
out on the highway, however...

Converging School Holidays in the United Kingdom,
the U.S.A. and the Canadian Province of Ontario have
generated a busy weekend, perhaps one of the largest
attendances of the season, so-far?

Weather Notes:

At 6:45 A.M., it’s currently -20 C in the Old Village of Mt. T,
adjacent to the Versant Sud, South Side Resort Base.
The forecast is for eventual sunny with mixed cloudy bits,
but at this stage, there is quite a uniform “grey” overcast
that does not look much like any portion of sunny is close by.

Conditions Notes:

Pay close attention to the Groomed Icons on the
Official Trail data below. On these trails we expect
a high level of refinement and all-day mogul resistant
firmness on an All-Snow base with very little in the way
of any form of glitches.

This is our forecast idea for todays Groomed performance summary:

In the Sous Bois, Glades, Hors Piste, and Un-Groomed,
it is going to probably be way more of an a la Carte scenario
because the weekend warrior Bushwhackers may have gravitated
to certain areas more than others, or, there was enough of the
busy weekend numbers that everything got well skied, so
the likelihood is that there is very little in the way of powder
left, and the basic modality is well traveled moguls.

Please Note: Mountain Open Hours Today To 4:00 P.M.

We are entering into what might be generally
recognized as the primary Ski Holiday time
period, centred around Official School Spring
Break or Reading Week(s), Holidays.

Tremblant is ready. The Alpine Snow Sports Trail
Network has Base quality of historic levels, highlighted
by a short roughly 4 day span last week, that saw 78cm’s
or approximately 2.5 feet, of new, fresh, snowfall.

Statistically, the 21 year Total Seasonal Snowfall Average is 418cm’s.

so...

At todays date, we have an Officially recorded 453cm’s.
Therefore, at Feb. 18, 2019, we are well over what most
whole seasons get, and the excellence within the conditions
now reflect that.

If it’s possible, weekday visits may offer the greatest
opportunity for lapping big vertical.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
