At The End Of The Day...
It’s going to be a cool one tonight for the 24Hour Children’s Charity
Participants. The forecast low is for -20C, but once again, if you’re out
there tonight, it just feels like it could go lower. That makes it a real
test of personal endurance limits. Wind Chill values at descent velocities
will yield somewhere around -40C or more with the effective air-speeds.

Technically speaking, the Skiing will be superb. “Squeaky” cold snow has
unique performance properties in grip and glide, so if racers can insulate
themselves effectively, the skiing will be quite fine.

and we’re going to take a look at the newly Opened Expo Quad
Sector Trail # 79, the top part of “Sissy Schuss”, in addition to
some general daily references.

A Short Editorial On Where We’re At, Today At Tremblant.
We have to tell you that all the recent new snowfall, plus the
daily grooming cycles, plus the steady round the clock sub-Zero C’s,
have all combined to make it seem as though the trail surfaces
have really come alive. We want to make it perfectly clear that
we’ve enjoyed very fine conditions since the moment the lifts started
turning on 11/22/19, but if you’ve been here every day since, you’d
have the relative experience of passing days to realize the incremental
increases that take conditions up one or two notches at a time until
it dawns on you that these aren’t just starting conditions any more,
they are conditions that are beginning to positively mature towards
established winter, in both scope and uniform quality of performance.
It’s a perfectly natural progression in any season, and in this particular
one, perhaps a wee bit earlier than usual.
Seasonal development is always evolutionary and no one expects
Nov/early Dec. conditions to be the same as the 3rd week in February,
but... over the past few days we’ve seen and felt portions of Open terrain
achieve some of those mid-winter performance characteristics and
it’s been joyful to find them to begin with, then more-so to see them
expand within a larger and larger array of new trail openings.
If you’ve been out previously this season, you’ll notice that difference
today. If it’s your first time out, you’ll be amazed that on December 7,
there are wide expanses of very fine genuine winter performance.
This phenomenon is not restricted to Skill Level Ratings. Beginners
get the very same benefit as Experts in this regard. What makes
great winter performance for one group, makes it great winter
performance for all.
If there was ever a good example of that in-so-far-as previously open
terrain, it would have to be the entire Nord/North, Summit-to-base
descent path of P’tit Bonheur to Beauchemin Bas, Lower. This path
has been a seasonal starting conditions joy since day 1. Yesterday,
it came alive with full-on winter carving quality that was near flawless
from the first turn to the last. The almost effortless glide, the absolutely
reliable carving traction from turn to turn, all combine to render out
that little extra “Je ne sai qua” that triggers your internal recognition
of intangible greatness.
Another great case-study of that point is Versant Sud/South Side Nansen.

Tremblant Mountain Crews have also become very good at extending that
feeling of maturely developed Winter conditions to newly opening terrain.
If there was ever a good example of that it would have to include
yesterdays opening of Nansen Bas, Lower. We have stood at the top
of Nansen Bas, Lower, observing the growing natural snow accumulations
since opening day, then more recently, the addition of snowmaking,
all the while anticipating the day it would open. Our main interest was
to realize its benefits for Beginners for whom it is a true blessing of
easy access to the Sud/South Resort base. Not only did that realization
become true yesterday, but the added “Je ne sai qua” was that on it’s
very first Open day, Nansen Bas, Lower has a level of refinement in
its initial surface quality that feels like it’s been worked on for weeks.
When there is no one else around, any Expert can carve out Slalom
or GS style turns at speed that will render your Quad Muscles into Jello
with an astounding level of lateral grip, right out of the box. When there
is Beginner traffic, you can stand quietly trail-side, and it is immediately
apparent to observers how easy it is for new Skiers and Boarders to navigate
their basic moves over it’s silky smooth low friction snow. This is truly an
excellent opening for Nansen Bas.

For sure, Nansen Bas has room to grow as well, it is not at full
width in some areas, and it will respond very favourably to a
“Break-In” phase from both daily traffic and overnight grooming
cycles, so it too will get better as time goes by. Of course this is
somewhat weather dependant, i.e., a good ‘ole Blizzard could really
take everything way up, or a totally normal Fall temp. burp could
make things temporarily Spring-like, but no matter what, Opening
at this level is a foundation for a long and very fine season on the
beautiful topography of Nansen’s now combined, entire 6 Kilometres.

Conditions Notes:
With the 24 Hour Children’s Charity Fundraiser on from noon
today ’til noon tomorrow, the La Crete Summit corridor, plus
the entire Beauvallon Haut, Upper and Beauvallon Bas, Lower
descent path is off line for public access.
Mountain Crews have provided newly open terrain on Versant Nord,
the North Side, to compensate. Those Nord/North areas include
the seasonal opening of the Edge Sector, as well as the Expo Quad
serviced Peak/Zone.
We fully expect Trail Snow Surfaces to be as fine as yesterday,
so you can look forward to some really fine winter performance
today, however there may be some mixed particle sizes on
the new Nord/North open slopes. The grooming default is “Smooth”
though, so that should make everything relatively easy.
We hope to provide Apres Ski reviews of the new open terrain
and if yesterdays opening of Nansen Bas, Lower was any indication,
then there’s a fair probability we’ll find the new Nord/North with
very good initial surfaces. If you’re out there today, explore the
new terrain with cautious speed to confirm personal control
capability at First Tracks.
Every year we get frequently asked multiple times about the Event
traffic, i.e., “Is it going to be crowded or long lift lines?”. The answer
is that we have observed variable public attendance over the course
of many years of the 24 Hour Event weekend and what we have seen
happening is that it is not a given that there will be any traffic overload
especially in recent seasons. It seems as though the public may be
deferring due to the impression that it was going to be super busy,
when that has proven to not be the case. It has been our observation
for the past couple of seasons that public traffic has been relatively light
on the Event weekend and we have surprisingly found ourselves doing laps
with little or no lines at all. We can not predict absolutely that will be the
situation this year, but early/mid morning Web Cam snap shots indicate no
line-ups so far.
