3/9/21 #Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Late Night Quickie Apres Ski Edit @ 11:07 P.M.

Basically, it stayed a fraction of a degree cooler than “Thaw”,
so we got to squeak through one more day of Winter.

Big, Big Bonus!

This sample is from Nord/North Devils River and we could
find no fault with it, anywhere. Seamless, Smooth, Swift,
and really, really close to perfect. There was probably a twig
or something equally small or insignificant on it somewhere,
but we couldn’t find it...

Aa a consequence of a wee bit cooler being carried overnight by a solid sub-zero C,
the transition to soft we though would happen today, did not. It is possible that may
begin to be noticeable by around noon tomorrow.

Thankfully it kept all the “Rocket Fast” speed for the full day,
so we’re hopeful that may continue on for tomorrow as well.

For Tomorrow:

The Canary’s In The Coal Mine Continue To Sing Brightly.

The Diagnostic Significance And Outstanding Technical Merit Of
Versant Nord/North Side Trail # 66, Le Tunnel As A “Tell-Tale” Indicator.

Above: It’s now 4 days after initial grooming, so to find remaining
un-tracked trail edge Corduroy lines is astounding. As far as we are
concerned, this is absolute proof that the combinations of preparation
and grooming vs. use/wear is in near-perfect balance with the base
reserves from total seasonal accumulation. In our opinion, this is a
major indicator of the seasons peak of optimized groomed conditions
and it is an overall status assessment that can legitimately be applied
to almost every square cm of the outstanding groomed trail network
at Tremblant right now.

Though It Be Tiny, Its Significance Be Huge...

The importance of this trail above as a diagnostic indicator for the overall
status of groomed conditions can not be overstated. Even though it
is only a tiny fraction of the groomed square area, it is so sensitive to
traffic, weather, base conditions and seasonal snowfall accumulations
that its day-to-day status reflects a sort-of “Critical Mass” either way,
i.e., trending up/down in retained quality that can be generally extended
to the tipping points for overall groomed conditions. It was in the last
round of seasonal grooming refinements, and it will be one of the first
to show thermal and/or wear stress.

Therefore...

As long as we have 102/102 Open Trails and this kind of retained
groomed trail quality evidence, you KNOW the Mountain is in overall
excellent condition.

All that, plus the easy weather for today specifically, and you should
be able to clearly see the extraordinary potential for “Peak”, maybe
even “Best Of” conditions that very fortunate Tremblant Guests have
at this precise moment.

When you scale all of that up to the wide open spaces, you get the
“Big Picture” quickly as you begin to realize the vast expanses this
basic base quality covers.

Additionally, scaled up to the wide open spaces, you get the “Big Picture”
of the wide-ranging skill level coverages of extraordinary length and breadth.

This Nansen sample is 6 Kilometres of so “smooth” and “gentle” it is like
skiing on a Golf Course fairway of very close to perfect consistency.

Weather Notes:

Like it or not...

Today is the day that for
practical purposes, “Spring” arrives...

Judging by the dip in temps expected in the days following
this little spring preview spell, we’ll see a return to some
winter-like daily cycles, but this is all totally normal to see in the
range of any Mid-March possibilities. It’s nothing more or less
than moving forward in any season, and when you consider the
fact that there are only 5 weeks left, we’ve had an amazing run
of winter.

A quick peek back through our own records here shows
it may have actually been as far back as Christmas Day
when we last had a really warm or rainy wet day, and that
would represent a truly extraordinary string of winter
days, up somewhere around 74 which if we can verify
that, would be the second longest stretch of consecutive
winter days we’ve ever known about. Even in record snow
years, the average span of days between January/Feb Thaws
is in the 20 to 30 day range and they can last up to a week
in duration. We only had a handful of hours this year.

In a season with slightly below average accumulations,
this winter weather consistency, practically speaking
without thaw, has completely made up for any lack of
buildup, simply because we have kept virtually all the
snow that's fallen.

Conditions Notes:

Regardless of the potential for Solar and ambient air temps
to reach into the + 4/5 degree C range at the Sud/South Resort
Base Levels, up on the typically cooler trail elevations, we expect
the residual cool in the surfaces to remain for the full day today.
So, while the air may feel very ’Springy”, we think the trails are
going to Ski/Board with full winter performance due to the thermal
momentum generated by the -25C that was there 22 hours ago.
That “Cold” has not gone anywhere, yet.

On top of that, literally, there is another 2cm’s of overnight fresh
snowfall as a cushion for the pre-existing foundation of the exceptionally
stable groomed trail network.

The net effect of all that combined actually has the potential to tweak
what might be the very last day this season for a bonus extension of
pure winter conditions, basically the last day before we get into the
spring cycles of daily temp fluctuations that can span above/below
zero C in daily ranges.

It had to happen sometime, after all it is technically Mid-March, so
the whole notion of temp changes is totally normal for this seasonal
time-frame. Frankly, it’s been an excellent run of winter, in the sense
that even though the temp’s have been close to 0C many times, over
Mountain elevations they have remained just below, and there has not
been a single solitary significant January or February Thaw at all.
Tremblant Guests will have the full benefit of that today, exactly the
same way they have enjoyed for many, many consecutive weeks up
to this point.

That, by the way, is why you choose Tremblant when you’re booking
in advance some future September or October. Despite Global Warming,
we still get a genuine, authentic, entire “Winter” season here at Tremblant
and you can read through every day of it(over years), here in this daily record.
