T360 Prime-Time Apres Ski Edit Under Construct @ 9:27 P.M.
An Unexpectedly Cool, And Super-Fast, Super-Fun Day!
Mother Nature decided to tip the scales in favour of Winter...
At one mid-afternoon time-point, we estimate the Elevation Differential
from Sud/South Resort Base to the Summit was in the -7/-8 degree C range.
Normally, the summit is about -4 C cooler, so that was a huge and unusual
advantage.
Obviously, it was “Breezy”...

The wintery firmness has very fine performance if you have good edges.
And... if your edges were dull, you would likely think there were some
icy bits.
With good edges, the speed and lateral grip were outstanding, especially
after all the thermal effects of the recent warm spell, now re-solidified.
Naturally, we strongly recommend freshly tuned edges, the benefits to
the high performance experience begin with reliable laser-sharp handling,
and once you get used to that, you quickly begin to develop confidence
because of the consistency in the control that you enjoy run after run.
We would say that Mountain Crews just about pulled off some miracles.

Some Warm, Some Cool...
First, The Warm...
This is an action snap shot of a random person we initially took for the
really cool bright colours of fun, but on review, it clearly shows a beautifully
controlled arch in the skis with very little shred being projected and we think
it’s a great generalization of the current softer-side surface performance.

There are 2 main functional advantages of
the current balancing act Mother Nature is exerting
over the region with temps hovering around Zero C.
At this delicate stage of snow conditions there is practically speaking, no
saturation in the front solar-facing zones, and in the shaded and/or
obliquely solar exposed zones where the heat energy is far less, there
are what we will call the “Remains Of Winter-like snow”, still light and dry,
which up to Last Run yesterday, you could find in the sample below.
Secondly, The Cool...
You will notice below that there is not one single drop of snow-melt water on the ski.
What there is, is all fine dry snow particles and this is very close to Last Run, while
Sud/South Resort Base Temps were floating around + 5/6 degrees C.
Anyone who has doubts about why we use Trail # 66, Le Tunnel as a sector indicator
should immediately appreciate why this little bit of Ski-Heaven is so valuable when
it can so clearly defy what many/most would assume would be the effect of thermal
load so evident elsewhere.

A current common denominator in both the illustrations is the very good
inherent speed in virtually all the surfaces.
Even the warmest lower runout portions of Versant Soleil, Algonquin were
still fast in the late afternoon.
Our expectations for today are that there is sufficient stored cold in the base
substrates, plus there should be the cooler temps of Mountain Elevations, to
support a very similar utility model that carries forward what we had yesterday.
A currently ongoing benefit to the still very firm base is that as foundation for
whatever softness there is on top, it is keeping that softness relatively shallow
and in that way, while there is loads of lateral grip potential as you can see in
clearly arch’d skis of this additional Beauvallon shot below, the firmness is
also keeping the daily wear/traffic use patterns of the groomed terrain virtually
mogul free.

Weather Notes:
For today specifically, we really like the combined early overcast acting
as an umbrella while the temps are highest this morning. As the
sun is forecasted to come out just before noon, its a help that temps
are forecast to drop down to just below zero C, so if we do have the
typical cooler temps at elevations, we could actually see another
semi-winter conditions day, all day, up on the trails.
If you go back just 5 days ago(3.13.21) in this record, you will see a huge
difference in the long range models for this upcoming week. Evidently there
has been a relatively recent and very large change in the atmospheric dynamic.
This is one reason we like to use the word “Evolving” in the document title,
but another potential, however likely or unlikely it may be, is that the actual
developing weather could maybe revert back, closer to the lower temps that
seemed possible just a few short days ago?
This whole season has seen many instances of unexpected short-term
gyrations... now would be a great time to have a cool dip show up for
the sake of base durability.

Conditions Notes:
Highly dynamic/variable potential for softness or firmness depending
on front-facing solar exposures and the ability of the frost stored in
the mass of the Mountain to act as a thermal barrier to thaw.
The best way to illustrate that in simple terms is to make a Ski Pole
plant into any groomed trail surface from a static, i.e., stationary
position. What you will find is that even with all the downward force
you can apply, the pole will bounce off the solid base underneath
the top soft layer which is only about 5cm’s/2 inches in depth.
Until either the heat from above becomes so strong or overwhelming,
or the residual frost begins to dissipate from below, we expect this
delicate balance to be sustainable for many days and some weeks.
Keeping in mind that Tremblant’s Official Closing Date is one month from
today, plus... the 14 day long range weather model now includes “April 1”,
it’s certainly not unreasonable to see signs of quickly advancing spring,
our hope is that somehow, Mother Nature can maybe put on the brakes at
some point soon.
