Experts have been waiting for weeks, since Opening day,
for this kind of exciting Sous Bois zone opening, so today
is a very lucky day for all concerned.
Weather Notes:
Conditions Notes:
For Beginners and Intermediates:
With an Officially recorded 20cm’s of natural snowfall in
the last day, there may be lingering softness and a tendency
towards traffic generated mogul formations during the
course of the day.
This is due to the residual “loft” in the groomed surfaces
that with this significant depth, do not reach ideal levels
of compressed, groomed density until after a couple or
three days of night-shift packing cycles.
There are two typical zones that respond quickest.
The first is the Green/Easiest slopes that Mountain
Crews always prioritize after big snowfall. Trails
like Nansen, P’tit Bonheur and Algonquin are usually
the first and best examples.
The second are the trails that may receive two or more
grooming passes because they are access pathways to other
peripheral grooming operations, so they will be traversed
more than once to get to farther reaches.
Two examples are Fuddle Duddle Bas/Lower, and
Beauchemin Bas/Lower, where groomers utilize
these trails to cycle within sectors.
As the day wears on, these are usually reliable for
the kind of durable smoothness that is especially
critical for Beginners who will benefit the most from
consistently predictable conditions for learning.
For Experts:
Mogul building on Groomed Black rated Expert terrain
like Duncan or McCulloch can be expected.
Three days ago we wrote about expanding Sous Bois
Hors Piste and Un-Groomed Expert zones and today
sees a major seasonal opening of the Sous Bois zone
attached either side of Trail # 66, Le Tunnel. This is a
hugely popular “Locals” zone and for those with the
early season muscle and skills, it may well hold the
best depths of snowfall reserves because of its Lee-Side
position on Versant Nord/North, where it commonly
gets huge drift-in from the wind direction we had with
this current snow storm. Basically what happens is that
the wind force being driven up the ramp-like Mountain
shape over Versant Sud/South side slopes during a snow
storm, propels tons of snow over the Summit, where it
swirls behind and falls below the sheltered back-side of
the peak, uniquely filling up the entire Lowell Thomas
sector where Le Tunnel is located.
