We use Skis and Poles as crude, but handy measuring devices
to illustrate vertical and horizontal axis representations of both
relative depths and surface characteristics.
In this case what we see is not only a greater snowpack depth
in this location, reaching up to the toe-piece binding, but the
thicker consistency of the surface that can support the weight
of the ski, and ski pole without sinking in. This is due to the
slight presence of internal humidity in the warmer snow that fell
throughout the day which is demonstrating more of a structural
density capable of weight support.
Where this is all groomed in, we are forecasting a clearly
evident escalation in universal trail surface consistency
and all day durability for today. The important concept to
bear in mind is “Incremental”. With stable sub-zero C’s over
many consecutive days, with additional periodic snowfall,
the repeated mechanical action of daily grooming the cold
snow results in optimization of density that becomes
mogul resistant, yet remains completely malleable, i.e.,
softly workable in terms of edge-set.

This pic above captures the moment the skiers weight is
roughly 95.476% committed to the outside ski which
is clearly being bent into a near-perfect arch of a fully
carved turn. The soft groomed surface is totally capable
of supporting the centrifugal force and while the ski is certainly
is displacing snow along its path, it is not skidding sideways,
all the force is being retained within the running length of
the arch of the ski, within a depth range of 10 to 15 cm’s/4
to 6 inches, which is near ideal.
Imagine this everywhere on the groomed list.
The amazing part is the versatility in these surfaces also allowing
easy learning performance for Beginners. These groomed surfaces
have what we call excellent “Shear Properties”(#1), that is to say that
for side-sliding beginner techniques using the basic wedge Pizza
Slice shape, these surfaces are very low friction. Below is a repeat
from last nights Apres Ski showing the very thin wafer-like shapes
that “Shear” away from within the top layers with almost no lateral
resistance making all those Beginner control moves super-easy to
execute with confidence.

Clearing off the snow from the tip of the left ski above(#2), and without moving
it otherwise, then rolling it onto its inside edge while leaning over it, we get this
long-view perspective below of the very smooth surfaces down and over
the Nansen Bas/Lower final shallow pitch. This is where you enter the runout
of this trail after all 6 kilometres of this incredibly easy learning environment
which we say is one of the very finest Beginner(and up) practice zones, in all of
Eastern North America.

((#2) It’s necessary to clear off the ski tips in order to
give the automatic sensors on the camera something
distinct to focus on when you’re trying to capture
close surface detail. If you don’t, the camera has a
hard time distinguishing foreground detail when we
are actually trying to highlight the immediate detail of
the snow surface. Too much snow-white combined with
too little surface contrast, typically ends up with the
camera “Hunting” for a focus point, and often results
in off-focus images which does not become apparent
until later processing. For all these types of shots, as well
as our Proof Of Snow’s, clean skis act as a “Test Pattern”
for camera to register focus and contrast.)
