Awesome, Awesome Tremblant.

In More Ways Than One.

A Perfect Picture Combination!

Absolutely wonderful on so many levels.

Superlative groomed trail conditions,
extraordinarily beautiful winter scenery,
and on top of all that, the entire East Coast
of North America has returned to very much
warmer temperatures, so you can easily stay
outdoors all day to enjoy it all if you want.

Weather Notes:

At temp’s anywhere close to Zero C, we’re delighted to
have overcast as the primary forecast element. The last
thing great winter snow needs at or near the freezing
mark is solar radiation, so an effective umbrella is going
to serve a very useful purpose in helping to keep the crispness
in the all-winter snow at typical cooler by -4C Mountain
elevations. Add in some forecasted new snow flurries and
the whole picture looks great for a really sweet day.

Conditions Notes:

The jewels in the Tremblant crown right now are the
groomed trails that all have very high levels of uniform
excellence. Most of these trails are quite near flawless
in terms of the top-to-bottom, wall-to-wall scope of
refinement. It’s been many weeks of continuous cold
with incremental snowfall additions where each new
layer has been meticulously integrated into the base
strata and this grooming quality is immediately apparent
within all listed decent lines.

The 5cm’s of fresh snow yesterday morning added
a nice little cushion of softness everywhere and you
can see how that was being spread around in this
sample shot below.

The Sous Bois/Hors Piste and Un-Groomed continue to
be more individualistic in character, however the overall
levels are very good as would be expected within a base
snowpack at near 3 metres of depth. In these unique
conditions, traffic patterns can generate additional challenge
as the cuts between the moguls increase both the depth
and the potential for natural hazards to be exposed in
the low points. These zones are marked with hand posted
signage by the Ski Patrol and you should take them seriously
in terms of cautious speed and the absolute necessity of
legitimate Expert skills experience.

In the typical seasonal processes of grooming refinements
trails like the Banzai sample above may be groomed when
there is sufficient natural snow. These trails are unsupported
by snowmaking so they are totally dependant on Mother Nature
for enough snow reserves. We refer to this trail specifically as
one of three “Canaries In The Coal Mine” that signify the uppermost
apex in healthy seasonal conditions maturity at Tremblant, so keep
an eye out for any status changes on the list because if/when they
do get groomed, they instantly reveal some of the most beautiful
topographical flow patterns on the Mountain and they will simultaneously
be useable by an exponentially larger cross section of skill levels,
including confident Intermediates.

Our Very Unofficial Trail du Jour Award...

Versant Nord/North Side, Duncan.

Duncan has not only had some of the most consistently
beautiful groomed conditions, but it has also had added
skill-testing interest as Mountain Crews have left a series
of very large diameter snowmaking “Big Bumps” on the
left descending side of the lower portion that have turned
out to be a ton of fun because they can be traversed laterally
across their tops as a stepped series of effective zero-gravity
contours that also offer the opportunity for great natural speed
regulation with the ever-so-slight uphill approach that can be
made by coming into the lower right side over each one. We
would estimate that there is between 20 to 30 metres of random
bump spacing along this Duncan Bas/Lower descent line.

Basically, by carving a left-hand lateral traverse to apex the
peak of each big bump from just under the right side, you can
quite literally be momentarily going uphill for a split-second,
and by repeating this directional pathway over each bump,
you can a)... very easy control your speed down to zero, and
b)... if you are brave, keep enough just velocity use the zero
gravity uplift to get a touch of air over each crest. For a skilled
“Front-side Carver”, this is very close to addictive fun.

By creating little hills within the descent line of one big hill,
Duncan has been given a unique character that is very much
worth a few repeats just to find the right balance of speed,
approach angle and gravity over these contours that works
for a wide range of skills. In that sense, Duncan is also skills
building as well as skill testing, multiple sequential runs will
immediately convey the learning/performance benefits of even
slight change in descent lines over the contour profiles.

We have written previously about this total fun zone so we are
happy to report on its ongoing conditions and we very much hope
it gets maintained in the same way as it has rendered Duncan
Bas/Lower with a bit of a new personality that has been delightful
to play with the laws of physics over.

A Note To Future Readers, and/or
Those Researching Tremblant
As A Potential Destination:

The above reference to the current unique characteristics of Duncan
could also be considered to be a prime example of the kind of variety
that can often be found at Tremblant from season to season as Mountain
Crews generate new approaches to shaping select zones with different
finishes. Duncan was not at all like this last season, and it may not be the
same next season, so while the general descent path will the same, there
is just enough in the way of an individual seasons modification here to
keep things really interesting. These unique trail finishing touches can
often be found on a rotating basis within the 4 corners of the Mountain,
so even if you skied Tremblant this season, if you come back next season,
you are most likely going to find some other creative contour shaped
trail(s) that will keep you entertained and engaged with the adaptations
you can make to take advantage of any seasons individuality.

------- Ski/Board Utility Notice: ---------------

With temp’s reaching anywhere close to Zero C, the
very top snow layers can have increased levels of
internal humidity that may reduce glide. Under these
circumstances the application of waxes or other base
treatments can be significant assets for maximized
speed and glide retention. The point of including this
notice here is that readers looking at the long range
outlook for the rest of this work-week are recommended
to proactively prepare ski/board bases accordingly.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
