4/8/22 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct At 10:39 P.M.

There was a substantial amount of new snowfall, wind drifted to depths
of up to 25 cm’s in select Versant Nord/North Side favoured zones.
Regional low ground levels have reported up to 18 cm’s, so it will
be interesting to see how much Mountain stat’s show in the morning.

In our original early morning post below, we speculated on three
scenarios for todays snowfall and what happened was right in line
with our third possibility, namely... "that the thickness of the new
snowfall exceeds any forecast expectations and generates
a genuine workout environment."

Due to the close proximity to zero C, combined with 100% humidity,
it was quite near thick as a brick, and extremely challenging at an
Expert level. It fell on both open sides of the Mountain, so straight
lining Sud/South Nansen just to be able to get through it, was just
the same as on Nord/North Sissy Schuss.

The sample below is from the mid-level plateau of trail # 79,
Sissy Schuss, and it is a typical sample from a trail listed as
groomed. Evidently, it must have been groomed prior to the
bulk of the snowfall.

This was construction-grade, cast-it-into-foundation-blocks, super dense
warm wet, way, way better than the forecasted rain, spring snow, laid down
fresh, right out of the sky.

It was very challenging to turn in because the combined thickness
and friction did not permit sufficient speed for efficient ski tip
floatation.

When it comes to April 8 comparison of any season though,
this is going to be a wonderful addition to the groomed strata,
particularly when you consider that a more typical precipitation
for this time of year might/could be, big buckets of rain.

All hope for practical multi-level skill use tomorrow is grooming. Period.

There may also be a considerable expansion in available terrain
tomorrow as well. Zones and lifts not available during weekdays
should be back on line. We are not sure how it could translate into
Sous Bois availability, the thickness is demanding, but real Experts
with good muscle reserve should be O.K. with the extra effort needed.

For some reason we are not sure of,
the Official Snow Report does not show
any numeric increase in the total
snowfall, however as you can see below
there is indeed snow clearly accumulating
in these Web Cam snap shots.

Weather Notes:

The forecast data says rain...

so-far, the reality is snow.

Conditions Notes:

(Please Note: The relevance of any or all of the following
is that if the base is at + 2C, the Summit is somewhere
around -2C, and without the new snowfall there would
have potentially been either a lot of lower sticky and/or
a lot of upper icy after yesterdays all day rainy.)

Even thought the new snowfall may initially be a
small numeric value it is a potentially huge
mechanical advantage for at least a couple,
or maybe three reasons.

For the first, think of it this way, sort-of...

Imagine 2 very large steel plates set on top of
one another. It would be very difficult, as the
result of weight and friction, to push the top
plate around/over the bottom plate.

Next, imagine a small handful of ball bearings
being inserted between the plates. Even though
those ball bearings might only be a millionth of
the weight of the plates, suddenly the top plate
can be easily pushed by light hand pressure with
very little resistance.

This is not a perfect analogy, but it does at least
partially illustrate the potential value/importance of
a very small friction modifier in a large system. In
this case, the top plate is the running surface of your
skis/board, and the bottom plate is the trail base
as it existed in any form of sticky the moment
before the ball bearing snow began to fall.

The second potential functional characteristic of
the new snowfall, even at modestly small amounts,
is what we could call the “Integration Effect”, where
yesterdays base influenced by wind, rain, heat,
then cooling, almost instantly gets a new layer of
very humid, big, fat, snowflakes coating everything.
Even a thin depth of this type of cushion can be very
effective at being a highly workable traction layer
as it bonds with moisture adhesion to the base where
it may have become icy before the snow began to fall.
In this case, because the snow is still falling, the
prospects for great end results just gets better
and better as it piles up.

The third possibility is that the thickness of the new
snowfall exceeds any forecast expectations and generates
a genuine workout environment where heavy and dense
become prevalent in descent mechanics. If that were the
case, then Experts who thrive on challenge will have
immediate fun but the potential value for average recreational
skiers is in the future as any significant buildup needs to
get integrated into the base by the grooming process.

The degree to which we can report on how any of these
potentials could make for actual functional differences in
the skiing experience is going to be completely dependant
on field work, so we will have to get back to you on that. In our
opinion, the probability lies totally on the very positive side
as there is most often a synergistic outcome for these combinations
that can far exceed the total of the individual elements.
