81(*) Open Trails On All 4 Sectors At #Tremblant .

No Camera On Earth Can Completely Capture The
Magnificent Scenic Grandeur Of Tremblant Right Now.

All we can do is try...

The Official snowfall total is registered at 5cm’s, however
we can tell you for a fact that the strong Westerly wind
was generating drifting with substantially greater depths
in many lee-side sheltered zones, particularly within
Versant Nord/North Side and Edge sectors.

The thickness of the snowfall was evident at times
on all 4 compass-sides of Tremblant and while the
upper Versant Sud/South Side took the brunt of the
direct facing wind blast, the photo below shows a
typical surface thickness that is even apparent at
the Resort Base, trail # 29, Johannsen.

Together with the thickness there was a touch of friction in
the new snow that made steeper pitches considerably easier
and we thoroughly enjoyed a full-tilt and fully carved descent
down the Summit pitch of McCulloch without so much as a
single glitch or icy bit. Too much fun!!!

Weather Notes:

It is a legitimate “Bundle Up” day and any mistakes
you make in the details of garment seals, overlaps,
or closures will become apparent very quickly.

We would have to say that many recreational skiers
do not get the full thermal benefit of the garments
they are wearing due to sloppy attention to closure
detail. Taking an extra minute to make sure the
overlaps, seals and fastenings are correct, before
going out the door, will make a critical difference to
retention of inner warmth. What we frequently see
are folks making garment adjustments outside, when
a cold ingress has been noticed, but by then it’s
already late and heat has been lost. So, the word
to the wise, especially visiting guests from Southern
latitudes not experienced with real winter conditions,
is to practice and become thoroughly familiar with
your assembly of layers and fastenings before you
get out there and realize there’s something not right.

New Terrain Opening Development News:

There is an entire group of Tremblant fans that have
a very specific interest in Versant Nord/North Side
Trail # 82, Expo, and for that group there is great news
as Expo Haut/Upper has received the primary rough
cut winch grooming that will ultimately lead to its
refined finish and opening.

Intentional Or Unintentional?

We are not sure if it is a Mountain Op’s strategy,
however the net effect is the same...

What we think is very interesting is what happens when
initial rough cut grooming is left when snowfall happens.
Looking closely above at the rough groomed surface at the top
of Expo, you can see how the natural snow is being captured
within the course track cleat marks left by the groomer over
the top crest.

The net effect in this is that because there is something for
the wind pushed snow particles to grip, they are filling in
and being retained over a surface that would not hold
practically any snow at all in such a big wind, if it was smooth.
In this way there is genuinely meaningful integration of natural
snow into the final blended finish grooming that renders a higher
quality descent experience when the trail is opened.

We also want to point out the tremendous extra volume and
depth of snowmaking over this peak crest this season. We estimate
there has been a built up depth of maybe 6 feet of extra snow
in this zone that is prone to Spring thaw inhibiting access to the
main pitch that often keeps great snow, but has been difficult,
sometimes impossible to reach.

For all these reasons, we think Expo is going to be spectacular
when it opens, plus, with strategically placed extra snow banked
in, it may have some of the most durable spring quality known
within recent seasons.

Please Note: Supplementary Terrain Snowmaking

Check the Official list below. It is very noteworthy
that there are several zones of intense snowmaking
in what we might call a supplementary mode. Perhaps
the best example of many is Versant Sud/South Side,
trail # 6, Nansen Bas/Lower that has been open for
many weeks, but is closed today with active snowmaking.

We think these may be strategic preparations for Spring.
In the specific case of Nansen Bas/Lower, there have recent
seasons where the main descent length has demonstrated
excellent trail snow retention right up to closing day, however,
there have been critical connective points, especially on the
lower portion, that were subjected to sufficient thaw that were
not repairable by harvesting nearby banked snow and the
trail had to be closed prematurely. By committing to reserve
production at this early and optimal weather point, we think
it is reasonable to conclude that this work now will benefit
future durability to seasons close.

We could be wrong on the exact intent, but there is no doubt
that additional banked snow is a desirable asset for the quality
and durability of any trail over the course of any seasons later phases.

Conditions Notes:

In the freshly groomed.... Fantastic!

There is a very good chance that with the overnight low temp
cold shock, that the whole Mountain will be a lot faster today
due to what in effect is a mass freeze-dry process where
Mother Nature eliminates the all the internal humidity of the
new snow in the cold overnight hours. For that reason we think
natural glide and speed could be substantially greater today.

With less inherent speed control, that means there may be
a greater need for individuals to rely on the technical skills
necessary to offset gravitational influence. Assertive edging
together with complete, deliberate finished turning sequences
at constantly controlled speeds are some of the best proactive
ways to prevent out of control or runaway issues. Intermediates
in particular will want to cautiously explore degrees of steepness
today in order to determine safe challenge levels and you should
definitely reduce speeds before going over any crests leading to
steeper pitches.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

Due to the very light traffic yesterday, plus the additional
snowfall, we think today will be positively be between slightly
elevated and very noticeably elevated in overall quality due to
favourable drifting patterns.

For that reason, we would repeat from previous that...

"You need to confirm safety and risk first, prior to ripping
around within the various open zones but for those willing
to patiently explore there is select excellence."

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
