Technical Skiing Or Gorgeous Scenery...

Beautiful Conditions On All Accounts At Tremblant!

The pic’s above and below were shot within about
45 seconds of each other, the differences in contrast
and light quality are simply back-lit sunlight above
and the Summit shadows over Duncan Haut/Upper
below.

If the resolution in this pic below seems a bit off, it’s
because there’s so much snow dust in the air from
other simultaneous traffic that it is snow-filtered.
However... the edge-set performance is crystal clear
to any experienced skier and that’s the point we
want to get across and we expect that to be a repeat
for today.

Weather Notes:

We have had multiple questions about the impact of the
forecast rainy bits in the overnight hours and while we
do not have a crystal ball, what we can tell you and you
can see yourself, is that if you scroll back through the last
3 days of hourly forecast records here, the actual overnight
lows have been colder than forecast by many degrees, every
single night. For example last night’s low was forecast at -7 C,
it actually got down to -16 C.

If that colder than forecast happened tonight as well(?),
it could easily mean snowfall over Mountain elevations
that are cooler anyway. We could be wrong. The only for
sure test is going to be “wait and see”. If we had to bet on
it, we might say 60/40 odd’s on snow up on the trails.

Conditions Notes:

In both the freshly Groomed and recently Groomed:

We had 2 “Icy Bit” chair lift comments made to us
yesterday and in both cases the individuals making
the remarks could not identify what year they last had
a Ski tuneup.

This is nuts.

This is also the reason we make a specific reference to
“Technical Skiing” in our headlines for today.

The pair of skis we are currently using are 11 seasons old
(the exact skis pictured below), but they had a hand filed
edge refresh 3 days ago and they carved like a surgeon
with a sharp scalpel all day yesterday to the point we’d
call Tremblant 96.347% icy bit free.

There are some odd slick zones but they are primarily
just very high density firmly packed snow trail base that
may have been exposed by traffic concentrations or by
direct wind exposure.

If you have worn, rounded edges, or too much speed,
if you are and Intermediate on Expert steep slopes,
they may be perceived as icy but that is not even close
to a fair criticism.

The point is, all feedback about conditions needs to be
evaluated in light of the actual skill levels and equipment
status of the loud excuse-makers who want to find blame,
when the reality is that there is an extensive range of excellence
in front-side groomed conditions that simply wants properly
maintained equipment to optimize performance.

Do not bring your Ferrari to the track with flat tires.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

Highly individualistic, from raw to excellent, but...

There are still untracked fresh powder lines in open Sous Bois
zones with over a metre of free depths. Period.

Objectively, there are also some very deeply tracked/hacked
raw mogul zones with significant hazards and unforgiving
Experts only conditions. They have specific Ski Patrol hand
posted notice and that notice should be taken with all due
respect. All explorations should be undertaken with deliberate
caution and reduced speeds. You may not assume that any
Un-Groomed descent line will be exactly the same on repeat.

Please Note:
There continues to be a glitch in the accumulated snowfall
total shown here at 425 cm’s. If you add in the snow that’s
fallen since the total was Officially reported at 434 cm’s on
Feb. 6, the total should read somewhere between 441 and
445 cm’s.
