T360 Super Quick, Super Brief, Apres Midnight Apres Ski Edit @ 12:17 A.M.
Despite significant solar energy, his was the softest
place on the Mountain.
3.22.23.Sud.South.Flying.Mile.Quad.POV.Over.Soft.Spring.Johannsen.To.Resort.Village.c.jpg
Everything above this final descent on Johannsen
to the resort base, was winter-like.
The groomed skiing today was superb performance
across all skill levels. With our well tuned edges, if
there were icy bits, they were not perceptible to us.
Tonight, the Summit and much of the Mountain
is Sub-Zero C, and tomorrow the Sud/South
Resort Base level is forecast to be mixed precip.,
freezy-rainy/wet snowy, with temps up to +2 C.
There are too many wild cards to really be certain
however what we like to remind folks is that 80%
of the time, conditions up on the trails are far, far
better that the base level forecast may suggest.
More review and forecast detail in the morning
but with the current forecast profile, you’ll need
to be ready for anything...

100/102(*) Open Trails
Fantastic, with very early hints of Spring Skiing.
3.21.23.Sud.South.Kandahar.POV.Over.Lac.T.d.jpg
Super Fun For All Ages!
3.21.23.McCulloch.Summit.Pitch.Winter.Performance.Observations.c.jpg
Weather Notes:
The absolute trending benefit in recent days has been
the far cooler elevation differential of around -7C at
the Summit. Compared to the normal -4C, this has
been a huge asset for retention of “Winter” over
the majority of the trail network when Sud/South
Resort level temps have been floating around the
freezing mark. That may or may not happen today,
but the residual chill in the hill, as well as the snow
in the trees, are all still there to a large degree today
because of it.
3.21.23.Soleil.Sector.Franc.Sud.Sunny.Pathway.To.Fun.c.jpg
As a case study, the Soleil sector has two adjacent trails
that are exhibiting substantially different characteristics
simply due to the lay of the land.
Algonquin has been quite near flawless, while its next-door
neighbour, Toboggan has had some icy bits as a consequence
of previous heat that was just enough by a handful of degrees
to generate flow zones below some of the more pronounced
crests, together with the steeper pitches below. If you have very
sharp edges, you will be fine as long as your speed is checked
at the apex of the crests.
In the mean-time, with an overall more gentle pitch-angle
and no significant crests, Algonquin does not even have a
single spec of icy we could find. Additionally, because it is
rocket-fast, and virtually empty, a full-tilt SL or GS mode decent
here can get you a lot of air-turns and totally reliable edge-sets
generating immense centrifugal force that will turn your quad
muscles into jello in a single run.
The summary in this case is that careful explorations will
reveal both the excellence and the “Hints Of Spring” that
can literally be beside one another. Once you recognize
those patterns happening within the descending contour
zones, anticipating challenge, and adjusting speed for safe
transit becomes just as easy as taking advantage of safe
speed where/when unpopulated gradients are more even.
Conditions Notes:
In the Groomed:
Very fine to excellent with a slight bias to Versant Nord/North Side
because it has just not taken the same degree of weather hits over
recent daily cycles of sun and direct facing wind.
This is the kind of sunny day that could see the afternoon high
temp exceed the forecast, so if, if, if that happened, there could
be a considerable degree of softening occurring on Sud/South and
Soleil lower sectors by just after the lunch hour and progressively
working up the Mountain towards last run @ 4:00 P.M.
In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:
Sectors of excellent and sectors of raw.
Experts Only Please.
The forgiveness factor is highly variable, sometimes
within a handful of linear descent metres. This is where
Expert experience comes into play as you simultaneously
may be having to speed check, navigate very challenging
surface depths and use patterns, and avoid hazards that
may not be visible until they are directly in front of you.
The new snowfall has remained remarkably light and dry
in many Versant Nord/North and Edge sector Sous Bois
zones so we would say those two areas may be the best,
however you can not assume beyond line-of-sight, so
absolute attention to turn-by-turn speed control is
required for optimized safety. There is still a crust
below the new snow and excessive turning force can
cause skis to become submerged so be gentle in the bush.
The scenery in the intimate Nord/North spaces
is still fully winter spectacular.
