T360 Late Night Apres Ski Edit @ 11:11 P.M.
Tremblant was not sunny until very late, almost at last run.
The cloud acted as very effective umbrella and once again
kept the Mountain overwhelmingly winter-like. We wrote
below about the sensitivities of +/- a couple of degrees C,
and it was a classic example of a couple degrees lower being
the tipping point for firm, fast and fun.
Race Coaches Rule!
Anyone who is a regular reader here knows we are
inspired by Race technique which has many, many
transferable elements to recreational skiing, so it
was a real privilege to have a couple of runs with
a bonafide Race Coach who you can see here ripping
up Duncan.

We are showing 2 sequential shots to illustrate the
cool winter-like conditions. The top layers are shallow,
however quite adequate for grip and control as long as
you were careful with applied lateral force. Fresh edges
mandatory.

One noteworthy observation is that the air-trail of snow
behind Coach Doug is all dusty dry winter granular, mostly
fine, but as you can see in the air, some course as well.
You could not really feel any of the course bits, it all skied
very smoothly and obviously with great natural speed.
At the end of the day....
The net effect of the weather was cooler than forecast
by a couple of degrees C and that was exactly enough
to keep the winter in the Mountain for another day.

78(*) Open Trails On All 4 Open Sectors At #Tremblant .
Extraordinary Beauty,
Extraordinary Fun!

The ski pole vertically plunged into the new snow below
could not touch the ground so we don’t know exactly
how much snowpack base there is, but suffice to say
“Lots” and as a result, there should be a very durable
Sous Bois open sector availability throughout the
remainder of the season. For sure, it is thick and
very dense, but that may well be it’s best quality
for extended durability.

Since 1939, Tremblant has been a hot spot for fashion
and that long tradition is still evident every day. Great
skiing and great style go hand-in-hand at Tremblant.

Weather Notes:
The long shadows and shade on Versant Nord/North Side
haven meant a lot less effect from all forms of warmth so
there is favour to be found there in the all-day evenness
of conditions that show greater consistency throughout
open hours.

Conditions Notes:
All very good to excellent, but as usual for this above/below
Zero C daily weather profile, highly evolutionary within open
hours when overnight Sub-Zero c’s generate morning froze,
and intense solar energy develops variable levels of thaw by
mid and late day hours. There is a slight favourability bias to
Versant Nord/North side trails that are only getting very oblique
sun, or are completely shaded.
The variation generally occurs from the most softness at lower
levels, especially the sun-soaked Sud/South and Soleil sectors,
however, eventually even the Nord/North does get some shallow
warmth effect, but just a touch and only enough to render out
some truly outstanding, very grippy, high performance that is
virtually saturation free.
Yesterdays first tracks were outstanding with near flawless
grooming and a few cm’s of pristine snow over corduroy,
but by the late afternoon, solar radiation turned some
lower Sud/South and Soleil portions into velcro-like sticky
bits that required pole pushes to traverse.
Such is the nature of authentic Spring Skiing. Of course
the thermally induced drag made steep pitches very easy
with a good dose of automatic speed control, so not only
was there exceptional Expert fun, but we would also say
for those aspirational skill builders, it was an equally easy
and exceptional learning opportunity for very manageable
skills development in evolving steep but soft mogul formations.
We expect today to be roughly the same, although with
projected daytime highs of a couple of critical degrees
cooler, there may be a more general durability in overall
firmness today. That would probably be an asset for natural
speed retention though as well as the consequent lesser
amounts of sticky bits.
As an enhancement to the overall quality, we would expect
that the second post-snowstorm grooming cycle last night
should have rendered out more ideal levels of compaction
everywhere that has had fresh machine finishing. The reduction
of loft in the groomed layers is something that only occurs
with repeat/sequential overnight shifts, so if that happens
we think there should be a lot less in the way of mogul or
chunky bits evolving through the mid-to-later open hours.
------------ Conditions Caveat: -------------
Oscillating temps starting below and ending above Zero C
generate solid to soft conditions where the solid periods
require well tuned edges for safe speed and controlled fun.
If you are here for first tracks this is critical. If you can only
make afternoons, not so critical, but there are always firm
or icy bits that are far less hazardous with maximized
mechanical grip and sharp edges are the only thing that
provide that advantage.
------------------------------------------------
It should be noted that the forecasting here is based on the
weather happening as forecasted, however when temps are
close to Zero C, literally 2 degrees C either up or down could
generate substantial differences in conditions. It is therefore
wise to be ready for almost anything by having a positive
mindset that is capable of quick and flexible adaptation.
The summary is that for any March 28 in the record
there is an extraordinary amount of natural snow
with virtually complete, mid-winter coverages on
all open terrain. Both the Groomed and Sous Bois
offer exceptional Spring skiing due to the recent
big snowfalls that have accumulated a new all-time
record breaking total, currently sitting at 627 cm’s.
