Since 1939, Nansen has been a benchmark of reliable
excellence for all skill levels, where learning or just
cruising are equally well rewarded over 6 Kilometres
of gentle, predictable, dependable, high quality groomed
surfaces.

Another great learning zone is Versant Soleil, Algonquin.

There is a bit of challenge descending on Franc Sud to get
to it, but for those with good basic stopping and steering
skills, absolutely worth the time and effort to try this
outstanding run of superb quality that features amazing
width over a pitch that is generally like a golf course
fairway.

Weather Notes:

There has been a shift in the 14 day long range modelling
that now has less of a snowy component and more of a sunny
component. We think this might be one reason that there is
still an ongoing snowmaking effort as the immediate future
of natural snowfall expectations are not quite the same.

Compared to the most recent 5 year snowfall totals for this
date, this is still the second highest accumulation, only 8 cm’s
behind last year’s amount for this date.

For those who don’t remember, last season was the highest
ever record total seasonal snowfall... ever, at @ 657 cm’s,
6.57 Metres, or 21.555 Feet! To be that close is a great place
to be. Of course, the warm spell over the Holiday season was
a setback, but certainly no one could say Mother Nature has
not made a good, solid comeback with over 105 cm’s
since January 1.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

Excellent, with a side order of “Tuneup”.

We say tuneup because the principal snowmaking efforts
are on Beauvallon, Beauchemin, and Nansen, the major
Blue/Green descent boulevards on the upper half of the
Mountain from the Summit.

Nansen “S” is still available, so Beginners still have all 6.2 Km’s
of arguably the very best learning environment in Eastern
North America to work with.

We don’t know how long this tuneup phase could go for,
it could be a one, two or three days or so, but we totally
support all these efforts as completely justified strategic
reinforcements to seasonal quality and especially durability.

Otherwise, today, and for the next few days, we expect to
see an escalating level of refinement across the groomed
array as repeated passage of the heavy machinery should
render out ever-widening ranges of compaction that should
be fast, forgiving and fun!

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

After a busy weekend Sunday, most of the Sous Bois
will likely be well explored which could mean some
choppy conditions with a lot of uncompressed loft
still left in the tracking. In our opinion, this is not
a high forgiveness period for bushwhacking. Irregular
rates of forward motion generated by highly variable
thickness and density demand legitimate Expert
experience, so don’t be dragging your timid Beginner
or Intermediate friends into the bush until you know
they have the muscle and endurance to maintain control
and make it all the way through some of the longer
descent lines.

For those actual, genuine, experienced Experts, caution
is still warranted. This is still only mid-January and while
Mother Nature has generally made an excellent contribution
in the last two weeks, it has been delivered by vigorous
winds that means there may be variable rates of coverage
that want to have slow, deliberate, careful explorations
in order to verify safe passage.

The Ski Patrol may have quite a bit of hand posted signage,
take those advisories seriously and with respect.

Please Note: Your T360 author is not yet able to
be on site due to a post-surgical, medical LOA.
We expect to have that cleared by mid-December.
12.16.23-UPDATE: Due to LOA logistical support
issues, plus other scheduling issues, return
delayed but working on A.S.A.P.

Thanks for your patience. In the mean-time, we
intend to maintain the daily, chronologically filed,
weather and trail status data plus whatever
observational commentary possible for archival
date/seasonal/historical period sampling.
