Here’s What Your Friends At Tremblant
Have Been Doing All Day...

The Weather’s A Bit Grey...

But The Skiing Is Great!!!

Snowing is an excellent reason to be happy with grey
weather and even though it was not a lot, every snowflake
counts. One very interesting observation is that there
was perceptible snow being moved from the very heavily
covered trees to all surrounding ground by the vigorous
wind. It was quite amazing in places as big gusts suddenly
caused massive displacement through large sections of
trail-side trees and you could see literal big dumps of snow
coming to the ground.

Over on the upper portions of the Versant Nord/North Side
Lowell Thomas sector, just below the Summit, there were
tornadic swirls of wind occurring sequentially that were
sending tree snow in vertical columns rising 50 to 100 feet
over the tree-tops, then collapsing over the trail and the
bush. It was difficult to capture the density and dimension
with camera, but in this one below in the upper left of the
shot you can see one of these tornadic columns lifting
snow upward. There was sufficient force in the direction
of the swirling columns to bend the tress over and in this
specific case, we’d say that the left adjacent Trail # 99,
Archipel Haut/Upper, got more snowfall yesterday out of
the trees than out of the sky.

Weather Notes:

The extended forecast today is exactly why we wrote
yesterday that we were not concerned about the short
January thaw that at one point had rainy icons. Those
are gone now and what we see is ground level just
touching the “+” C’s, and we think the cooler Mountain
trail elevations may possibly remain below Zero C for
the entire time.

Any humidity that’s in the snow today is likely to be
un-noticeable and with the freeze-dry of the overnight
low tonight, we’d be projecting one more day of cool
winter snow performance for tomorrow as well.

Conditions Notes:

We are going to hold steady with our forecast
for today and extend it for tomorrow as well,
as being excellent cold winter surfaces with far
more user friendly warmer atmospheric conditions
as Mother Nature has one more cool night but gets
set to move in with a short but very common January
thaw on Thursday.

In The Groomed:

Fabulous, fun and fast. The tiny amount of
friction that was evident in the very cold of
recent days has largely disappeared and
there is a greater amount of natural glide
in the surfaces now indicating a slight rise
in internal surface humidity. Basically, at these
levels, the humidity is acting as a lubricant.
Where this will be most noticeable is for
Snowboarders who will find runouts and
plateaus a lot easier to traverse without
having to take a foot out.

For skiers, the free extra glide just comes across
as easier speed but on steeper slopes it means
a little more focus on maintaining full edge control
as too much speed is prone to loss of grip.

The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades Report:

If you don’t get the big picture here, you need
a new Optometrist...

We can tell you for a fact that there are places
in the open Sous Bois that if you step off your
skis, you will sink in drift lines up to your waist.
