Spring Has Sprung

There was a very noticeable, some might even say huge,
difference between Sud/South and Soleil sectors yesterday
in terms of the advance of truly spring skiing performance
qualities. The sun and ambient air temps generated a very
user-friendly, easy softness on Sud/South and Soleil that
made for a delightful afternoon of near ideal spring technical
characteristics with virtually no saturation.
The Nord/North stayed very firmly winter-like all
day. We expect that to be similar today, at least until well
after lunch.
Weather Notes:
Here we go with the onset of genuine “spring” daily cycles.
All we can say is thank goodness for the the last blast of
winter for the past week because we’re going to need every
second of the cold reserves generated in order to retain
as much open terrain as possible. In our opinion it won’t be
a problem for quite a while, especially looking at the overnight
low temps that should all be Sub-Zero C’s at the typically cooler
Mountain elevations.
As for the light rainy icons in the latter part of the hourly
forecast, there’s a really good chance we won’t see any of
that up over the trail network. It may depend on the height
of the cloud ceiling, but this profile usually means the active
weather is in small bands that pass through the area quickly,
mostly at ground levels. The small reference is in relation
to the square area of any given band when put into perspective
against the vast space of the entire region, so with any luck
those wet bits may be off in the distance. We could be wrong,
but over decades we’ve observed this outcome at roughly 80%.
If, if, if... there’s any residual “cool” in the winds aloft over the
Summit, there is some probability that within these low single
digit temp profiles that any overnight precip. could be snow
over elevations. It may be a long shot, but we can always hope.

Thank goodness the Summit tipped into Sub-Zero last night.
Together with the cold-momentum from the last week’s
worth of cold snap that is still fully embedded in the
Mountains substrates, we think the combination should
make even the top layers of surfaces today heat resistant.

Conditions Notes:
Applicable To All Categories Of Open Terrain:
The Summit did get down to -1C last night so there may
be some initial firmness but we don’t think it will take to
long to put a wee bit of top layer softness into things on
an overall basis, the revolving sunny bits are likely to work
fairly quickly.
The rates of softening between Sud/South and Nord/North
should be similar to yesterday although the specifics may
be dependent on the durability of sunny periods.
In that regard we would be happy to see any form of
overcast as any kind of effective umbrella to keep solar
intensity off the surfaces is a big, big asset at these temps.
