And Now, For Something Completely Different...
Instant Spring...
Here’s What You Need...
3.8.12.Sissy.Schuss.Descente.Poncho.jpg
Technically the skiing can be excellent. All the smoothness of mature
full winter coverages with the simultaneous warmth induced softness of
Spring.
People will laugh at us for saying that we have had some of our most
fun skiing, ever, in conditions like these simply because the astounding
levels of traction in slightly, and shallow warmed surfaces with the -30 C
of 48 hours ago still firmly embedded below, is like driving a Ferrari at
the race track.
Obviously(a)... the main challenge is to stay dry, the secondary challenge
may be vision. The Descente Poncho is the ultimate practical solution
for the dry, unless you’re really rich and you could afford Gill brand
foul weather sailing apparel. As far as vision goes, you do not need
your iridium reflective tinted goggles, they may actually fog up on the
inside because compared to the last 2 months, it’s hot outside. What
you need are yellow curved lens safety glasses that allow air circulation
and divert wind-blast while restoring contour contrast in flat light that
may be foggy or misty.
Obviously(b)... today is the Official start of the Spring Skiing era
of the 2024/25 season. It is not as if today is any worse, or better,
than yesterday, it’s just different, it’s just spring. Yesterday was
the end of pure winter, the end of the very constant cold. It may
be cold again, but if/when it is, that will only be temporary as
we head into the final weeks of the season, but in the mean-time,
the coverage and quality of the Alpine trail base is 100% complete,
solidly intact and very much ready for what could be an epic spring.
Weather Notes:
As usual with this hourly active weather profile, the light rainy
icons indicate that the precipitation is going to be in passing
pockets of light showers which typically means drizzle, sprinkles,
or very light rain, all that transit through primarily low valley levels,
and the higher elevations may see none of it, all of it, or brief bits
as the active zones move across the region. Many, many potential
wild cards here folks...
However... the possibility exists, especially if the cloud ceiling is low,
that the Mountain can remain largely or even completely dry compared
to base ground levels.
The serious consequence of this weather pattern will not be realized
until tomorrow.

Conditions Notes:
Generally:
a la Carte weather may produce any number of atmospheric
challenges, all of which can be easily dealt with if you have
some really basic kit that can be quickly deployed.
As noted above and repeated here for emphasis...
The basic item is the Descente brand poncho. This is one
of the most effective wet weather defence barriers in the
known ski world and you may see instructors, racers, and
locals wearing this essential kit item, all over the Mountain.
Secondarily, vision with misty/rainy/damp conditions do not
necessarily need goggles that can fog up on the inside. It is
already warm out so what we have found often works far better
are yellow curved lens industrial safety glasses that allow air
circulation, keep wind/water particle blast out of your eyes
and restore contrast/definition.
In The Groomed:
Due to temps rising, there is extraordinary potential for fast
fun as the the top layers of freshly groomed get a wee bit soft
and in doing so facilitate immense lateral turning grip over
the smooth foundation of the well established winter base
that is totally intact somewhere between 3 to 5 cm’s below.
It is very likely that the spring-like characteristics of today
may work from the base levels and work up towards the
Summit. We forecast that the most apparent changes may
be evident between 10:00 A.M and the noon hour.
As mentioned elsewhere here, 48 hours ago it was -30C, and
that cold has not gone anywhere, yet. That, along with any
variability in the migration of warm air into the region, will/could
affect the timing of evolving conditions today.
In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:
For the first few hours, you may find a surprising amount
of still very winter-like snow conditions as the remaining
loft in the loose snow can hang onto the cold easily due
to convection, i.e., cold sinks. It could take hours for warmth
to work its way into anything other than the firmest of the
traffic worn and packed mogul paths. A lot of the transition
in the Sous Bois group may be the consequence of warm
winds and in that regard, for today only, the trees typically
act as a surface layer buffer keeping the surfaces calm and
essentially protecting Sous Bois surfaces from the hot air gun
that some wide open trails might be subjected to.
Of course we could be wrong, if the forecast is not accurate
and the precipitation is more intense than expected, conditions
could react very differently.
You’ll need to be ready for anything.
Please Note: Due to the light precip. icons in todays hourly
weather profile, we would invoke our 80/20 rule where 80%
of the time conditions over Mountain elevations are far more
dry than ground levels that may get soaked.

want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.
When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential

page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.
There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.
