It’s Really, Really KKkkool.
There are measurable strata in local elevations
as we are getting temp inputs from multiple
sources between -30C to -33C.

Please Note: The Summit segment POV was a locked out
view and not in it’s usual rotational path. We suspect that
it was from earlier in the afternoon and due to extreme
cold that the camera may have been frozen in place. It is
a great pic of a brilliantly sunny, cold day so we’re adding
to that archive as an accurate mid-day weather conditions
sample.

Conditions Caveat:
This is not a kid-friendly temperature zone.
This is an extreme and difficult adult temperature zone
that requires meticulous preparations with sophisticated
technical insulation layers and absolutely zero exposed skin.
Frostbite can occur within seconds at forward
descent speeds.
There are altogether risks sufficient to warrant
a later start deferral when temperatures are
forecast to rise.
We specifically recommend you consider sleeping
in, enjoy a relaxed brunch and if you still want to
experience frigid weather, head out when it’s only
-24C...

In The Groomed:
To begin with, there may likely be a higher ambient friction
component because at -30’s C, the glide factor gets reduced.
Skis work exactly like ice skates in that the metal edges
generate enough momentary frictional heat to generate
a molecular thin layer of water that functions as a lubricant
within temperature ranges between Zero C, down to roughly
-28C. This may not be exact as atmospheric conditions can
vary the onset of friction within approximate/adjacent degrees.
The net effect of super-cold snow is like skiing on sand.
If there’s a benefit, the steepest groomed pitches become
easy due to the excessive friction that is a greater opposing
force than gravity.
In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:
Super-cool higher friction snow makes a considerable
amount of the Sous Bois way easier in a similar way
because the same steeper resistance is exactly the
same effective gravitational offset, but when the
environment includes either trees or really big
bumps, all of a sudden, everything become far
less of a hazard .
It could be argued that expressed as a percentage,
the Sous Bois group actually benefit in terms of
ease-of-use the most from super-Kkool snow
conditions just because the Sous Bois is also the
highest proportion of legitimate Expert steep terrain.
So, anything that makes it all more manageable also
makes it all safer with way less runaway potential.
