“Dynamic” Spring Conditions !!!


+/- 4 Degrees C when temps are well below Zero can mean
very little difference in ski conditions, but when the temps
are floating right at Zero C, the effects can be huge. As a
consequence, you need to check with Summit Info. Ski Crews
frequently for accurate Mountain Intel that is updated as it
happens.

We expect this scene from yesterday to be very much
the same today, including the fact that even though
there were rainy bits, much of the day was “Fly Under
The Radar” really, really fine, fun and FAST!

Weather Notes:









We’re getting to the point where “Spring” takes on
a bit of a “messy” look as the tree debris becomes
more obvious, especially in the narrower trail confines
that have forest surroundings.

What’s happening is that as the snow melts and recedes,
the tree debris, created by an entire winter of wind and
cold, does not melt and it gets left on top of the diminishing
snowpack.

It might look like dirt, but its actually very finely ground up
tree bark, leaves, cones, needles, etc., etc., that are clean
soft and harmless to skis or boards. Eventually, when the
snow goes away, it all becomes part of the compost on the
forest floor that helps facilitate the renewal of plant life in
the heat of the new growing season.

Conditions Notes:


Generally:

We expect things to be very similar,
if not virtually identical to yesterday
in terms of overall patterns.


In The Groomed:

Spring corn snow over a very solid base that still
has the vast majority of winter square area coverage
still quite nicely intact.

Restricted open trail availability is not because of
loss of coverage, yet.

What has been open has actually been loads of
fun and with almost zero traffic, we’ve literally
been able to make fresh corduroy tracks almost
all day. So-far, there has been excellent natural
speed in the surfaces and that is another huge
asset as spring snow can sometimes be sticky
if or when saturation levels increase. At this stage
the porosity of the loose top corn snow layers has
been totally effective at wicking the water off and
keeping that speed alive.

We expect almost all of that to continue today, although
in the unique fingerprint that each day evolves to, the
patterns may be different locationally, but the same overall.


In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

Not a lot of choice in this trail group, however there
is some potential in the upper Duncan/Lowell Thomas
sectors, if, if, if... the Ski Patrol determines safe utility.

There are some localized areas in the Sous Bois that still
have over a metre of depth reserve.

Respect and obey all Ski Patrol hand posted signage.
