Sunny, Spring, Sweet Snow!

91 Open Trails under brilliantly sunny skies.

Daytime high temp of 9C means today is going
to feel like a day at the beach!

The plus for today is that the overnight temp was down
around -12C, so that firms things up and puts some "cold"
back into the Mountain.

The minus for today is that our snow surface can not handle
too many days of heat sources without some melting occurring.

The rate at which this happens in the transition to spring
will be dependent on the fine balance of heat and cold in
a 24 hour cycle, as well as other factors such as wear from
traffic and the eventual spring showers.

One positive retention factor is the ambient frost in the Mountain.
In this case, the thinner layer of snow that our season has
had may also mean that it has been less of an insulating
blanket, allowing the frost from all those -25C nights back
in Dec., Jan., and early Feb. to work deeper into the ground
than might occur if there was a very thick insulating snow
cover.

The amazing durability of our base can only come from its
ability to withstand wear, tear and heat, so we think that
a deep frost level is a primary factor that we are getting the
benefit from now.

One reason the North Side retains its conditions
longer... This shadow tells it all as the North Side
surfaces get early relief from the heat of the long
afternoon sun that is baking the South Side at the
same time.

The skiing and boarding are first rate for all skill levels.
Spring conditions, where they soften the surfaces most
will mean that the going will become "thick" as the day
goes by, so all Mountain users should focus on solid, basic
technique with a centered, compact stance and continuous
speed control from turns and braking.

Bottom Line(s) on Conditions:

What we have is the best of the winters coverage
with fine spring temps.

You can't have it both ways for long though, so
when conditions are this good, your CRAZY not
to take advantage of them!
