3/15/10 Conditions

Blustery, Gusty Spring!

63 Open Trails this morning, at least that's what it was at 8:30 A.M.
but that could change at any second, literally.

Sunny skies with some quickly moving cloud cover scooting
across illustrates why we have a cautionary "Weather Warning"
in the Official Tremblant Snow Report.

The wind is warm, but its Howling at quite a rate, so the Gondola
is off-line at this time and access to the summit is by the Flying Mile
and TGV for right now, but that could change any second too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mid-Morning Update: Gondola Now Open!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

We only saw an overnight low of -1C and todays expected high
is +12C, so things will be quite soft from the word Go.

Here's a glimpse of what we had yesterday at Last Run.
Very active weather, but if there was a "silver lining" to the
cloud cover, it was that it kept the sun off our surfaces.

As you can imagine, the Skiing and Boarding are very "Spring",
with the high moisture level that comes with the warm sun
and wind.

What continues to be surprising is how complete the coverage
still is. Despite the debris that is showing on the snow surface
toward the bottom of the South Side in particular, there are
almost no bare spots at all.

From the summit down there is still very fine skiing and
boarding for all skill levels. While the board people all
have wet butt's from sitting to strap in, once you get going
it's still lots of fun and very much worth the effort to get
out and enjoy the slopes.

status report for today, courtesy of http://www.tremblant.ca

Choosing terrain that is appropriate for your skill level
continues to be a critical element in enjoying your day
without discomfort or injury. These are the kinds of
conditions where "Blue" runs can without notice, and
just out of site, instantly become "Black Diamonds",
use caution with speed if you are unfamiliar with what
is around the next bend or over the next crest.

When is a "Blue" (intermediate) run a "Black Diamond" (difficult, expert only)?
The answer is when conditions become very soft an BIG bumps come rapidly
out of nowhere due to traffic making tons of turns on steeper pitches, allowing
the soft snow to be piled into large moguls that are beyond the skill levels
of intermediates.

Even thought Tremblant was covered in overcast, once again we were right
on the edge of the weather front. Looking North-East over Lowell Thomas
you can see that the Saint-Donat ski area, some 40 kilometers away is
under brilliant sun without a cloud.

Coverage is still great and conditions are pure "Spring".
You need to focus on good basic technique, control speed
and explore the open terrain with care prior to ripping around.

No Doubt... A Great Day!

Assuming that:

1) You are matching terrain Selection with your skill level properly

2) Your equipment is in recent/good tune

3) You enjoy being outdoors, exercise, fresh air, beautiful views.

What continues to be surprising is how complete the coverage
still is.
