It's Officially Winter!

Did you stay up to see the Lunar eclipse at 3:17 A.M.?

56(*) Open and Progressively opening trails on the Official
list today...

If the "Progressive" openings happen on the North Side
it will actually be 100% open. Great advancement for this still early
season.

For early bird readers, conditions are excellent for all skill levels
and you should be making every effort possible to get out.

Light Mid-Week traffic makes for endless laps today.
The weather today carries on with a nice mild, by winter standards,
-8C to begin with, rising up to -3C after lunch, under very thin overcast
that there will be sunny brightness trying to come through.
North-Westerly winds, quite light, will be moving across the summit
from the Nansen sector towards Duncan.

Speaking of Duncan, we do anticipate testing to start tomorrow, but
depending on how well things go, it could start anytime. Having Duncan
back on-line will unquestionably make things a lot easier when there is busy
Christmas/New Years holiday traffic, compared to having to rely on
Lowell Thomas, as we do now to get back to the summit.

A friendly reminder that on the ungroomed trails there may be natural
hazards that you need to keep an eye out for. It's always a wise idea to
scope out new runs slowly the first time to locate any possible glitches,
then add some speed, or do your tricks the second time around.

Please note the "Progressive" or gradual openings,
as well as "Race" designated trails that may have
restricted access.
Anybody that Skied Tremblant back in the "Old" days,
like the '70's for example, will know that we thought it
was a great season if we got to ski Expo anytime in January!
Here we are now with the whole North Side 100% open,
wow, what a nice Christmas present!

Apres Ski @Tremblant

True to form for a weekday before Christmas...

Things were quiet on the Mountain in the sense that
while there was a steady group out, there were never
anything other than a few at the lifts for the most part.

The part of this pic that we want to focus on is the deck rail
in front of the Patrol HQ that is almost buried by snow.
Well, you say "we can't ski on it, so why is that important?"
This deck rail is indicative of something that we talk about on
a regular basis, namely the "Blowing and Drifting Factor".
All over the mountain, but statistically more-so on the North,
snow blows and drifts into depths that are far larger than
the measured snowfall. In our crude, anecdotal analysis we say
"the narrower the North side trail, the more drifting occurs"
because the trees bordering the older, narrower runs act as "Scoops"
where the snow settles in and gets deposited, then, it gets
sheltered from further disturbance.
You can also watch for these deposits on the "Lee"
side of trails, the side closest to the wind.

This is what we mean when we talk about "Private Club" days,
No line ups at all to speak of.
