Just How Much Of This East Coast Blizzard
Are We Going To Get?

Still too early to tell, however, if it keeps on falling at this rate
it could be quite a bit.

Obviously, we'll have a lot better idea Apres Ski and tomorrow morning
but for now, looking out on the back deck, the visibility is down to
about 500 meters through thick, quickly falling snow on the South Side.

Quotation from the http://www.tremblant.ca Official Snow Report:

"ATTENTION: Extreme weather conditions. Strong winds bring us
a fair share of challenges this morning. Please note that during the
course of the day we will re-evaluate the opening of certain lifts
and trails. Stay tuned on tremblant.ca."

This could explain the closure of Soleil, for sure. With the East wind
peaking, the Soleil Quad was subjected to strong winds in the top third
of its rise and it was unquestionably the coldest ride of the day yesterday
for no other reason than the wind stripped the heat out quickly.

With a stronger wind today, that could definitely contribute to the need to
delay its opening for very valid safety issues.

The Skiing and Boarding will be fantastic for those
that love blizzard conditions like we do.

Powder accumulations due to blowing and drifting factors
could be significant.

Off to the Mountain to check this out.

Will report back later.

Very interested to find out how much snow held on the trails and the rough amount that has drifted and settled in the woods.. Its obviously going to vary quite a bit from each side of the mountain but some general numbers would be great! Might just have to hit the woods all Friday!!!

The wind was really howling.

So much so, that the South Side lifts were all closed for safety.
When you stood on the Summit, you knew why. The wind was gusting
to the point that it would push you.

They had busses to take people around to the North and we were able
to hop onto one that left immediately.

There was powder everywhere.
Due to the wind, just as we felt there
would be, there was a ton of drifting, and to depths
we have not seen in a long time.

Also due to the wind, there were some wind-blown bare spots,
but those were pretty much restricted to directly wind facing
points very close to Summit levels. Once you got a short way
below the Summit, everything was fine and there was a
significant accumulation happening on the North where a
lot of areas felt almost sheltered.

Banzai was totally filling up and sheltered,
and this is just one sample. There was a lot more.

You should go ahead now and make your weekend plans
because Tremblant is simply excellent, if you can
handle a ton of fresh snow.

Not necessarily for beginners.

Hi Freeskier678...

It varied all over the place, and the wind even shaped it into contour drifts.

We have no idea what the stats say, but we can tell you that there
is probably an average of 6 to 8 inches where the wind can not blow it away.

There were drifts all over the place in the 18 to 20 inch range.

There were a few even deeper than that. On Rope Tow, just to the left
(heading downhill), of the Lowell Thomas chair line above,
and slightly above the second jump, there was a wind contour drift
that was narrow with a tight peak over a meter deep. You could see
from above as you approached it that it was basically a tall line drift
right across the hill. I hit it sitting back a bit to offset resistance and
blasted right through it with an instant face shot of cotton powder.

It packed the outside of my goggles. Haven't had a powder face shot
at Tremblant for quite a while. Like, years.

As you can see from the Banzai sample, in the narrow, sheltered North Side
runs, the whole freakin' run had 6 inches to a foot on it.

I tweeted at noon that Expo had a foot of powder under the chair and it did.

It was not all perfect though, there were some areas where there was slick
under the snow, so you still had to exercise caution where you could anticipate
that, like on some steep pitches.

Experts are going to have a blast, but beginners and tentative
intermediates are going to find it difficult to navigate.

It will be interesting to see how the Mountain Crews approach
grooming now, but one things for sure, there's no shortage of snow
in most areas.

We're thinking the Mountain will be Fully Open very soon.
