2/4/11 Conditions

Post by T360 »

(Our apologies for the slow rate of page construction today.
Previous commitments, etc.

What we hope to do is build sort of an "Earth Sciences" Pictorial
of this fantastic snow week to illustrate how we've gotten to today.

Basically, Tremblant is in fantastic shape and as time permits,
we will add when we can. If you are planing a visit for either the weekend
or other immediate future, do not waste any more time thinking.
We have the best conditions that we've had in a long time, right now.

Firm up those plans and get ready to Rock at Tremblant!)

While the stats say 27 CM of snowfall, we can tell you for a fact
that with the Bowing and Drifting factors, there's a lot more than that
in places.

There are also places where there is less, but those tend to be up
toward the summit where the peak wind velocities were enough
to move it off. Those areas are very minor in comparison to the
overall coverage which is universally even over North, South, Edge
and Soleil.

From Wed. As the Mountain Crews get ready to work on all the fresh snow
the silver Pinroth "Beast" (that's it's actual model name), sits and waits
for its operator to get in behind the controls.

This pic tells a lot about our reference to the "Blowing and Drifting"
factors as you can see by the way the wind has shaped the snow around
the tracks and blade. You can also see that there are windblown portions
where due to direct high velocity wind, there are bare sections. This is
localized to the Summit for the most part.

Basically, you can scale this up to the size of the Mountain and imagine
how the wind has worked around trees, land contours, open spaces
sheltered spaces, etc., etc.

Regardless of depths at any given point, much of it has been carefully
packed and groomed by the Mountain Crews who have been working
around the clock to secure as much of the fresh as possible into the base
right where it sits. Their efforts have been spectacular!

Rated only as a "Powder Day", Wed. was wonderful by any standard.
We found Powder drifts over a meter in depth that could be skied through
with Western like face shots of soft fluffy snow that were almost surreal,
the like of which we've not had at Tremblant for years.

This is an important Wed. pic because it clearly shows the difference
from the windblown Summit(you can just see the top of Banzai
at the summit far up in this pic), and only a few hundred feet of
vertical below, here at Banzai's mid point where the snow is even,
thick and very sheltered from the wind.

The Skiing And Boarding Are Superb...

and this next 48 ---> 72 hours will be some of the best Alpine
snow surfaces known to exist.

As time passes, the snow settles, not to mention that the Mountain
Crews are still working on it. Repeated Grooming/Packing compresses
the cold, dry snow into the base creating remarkably fine, grippy
surfaces that are carving heaven.

very small reality check...
Speed, Safety, Hazard Caveat In Effect:

As close to perfect as it is...

Watch your speed. Mixed surface conditions of highly
variable resistance can create potential imbalance situations
when you pass through high resistance zones that may come
without warning or slick, low resistance zones that may come
without warning.

For Example: Some of the steeper pitches may not hold snow where
the wind has pushed it off, or through Skier/Boarder use, where wear
has moved it. There could be other areas such as high traffic, intersection
or narrow run-outs zones, where there are hazards that need caution.

You need to explore the Mountain with care and control until
you have verified safe passage for your skill level. We're dealing
with Mother Nature here, so even though the Humans do all they
can, glitches can and do occur.

This applies to all skill levels.

The shapes of Nature tell a fascinating story to those
willing to observe.

For Future Archival Review:
Re:Snowstorm that occurred 2/2/11
Recorded Snowfall @27CM

This is a medium density, wind packed powder with enough grip to hang on
to the needles of this tree. Packed into base on the slopes of Tremblant, this
snow has excellent edge set properties that facilitate optimal carving grip
and forgiveness for Alpine, Downhill, Snow Sports.

It is a very cold-dry-formed snow crystal with a translucent light diffusing
characteristic that allows it to almost glow in the direct sunlight.

This snow came here when it was -20C+/- in very windy, gusty conditions that
we estimate were routinely in excess of 35 to 40 Kmph, at the summit. We
further estimate that aprox 90% fell in an 8 hour span.

When compressed, it seems to form a very tight interlocking
structure with a firm surface that allows carving grip with a
small amount of shred depth.

recognize this quality.
