Spring for a day!
There are always 2 sides to the coin, so let's be positive
with a "Heads Up" look at this very brief Spring preview
that Mother Nature is giving us today.
Firstly, reality check. It is what it is. 1 day of potentially warm,
rainy conditions. (The Weather Network is calling for a return to
sub-zero temps and Snowfall by 7:00 P.M. tonight.)
As any experienced Skier or Boarder knows, that's not a bad thing
if you are properly prepared with appropriate gear like a good Descente
Poncho.
If it rains...
This is what you need to stay dry. This is one of the best Spring Ski
items you will ever own and it makes a day like today fun and enjoyable.
Period.

For just over $100.00 bucks, this is one of the smartest things
you can have for "Spring" and you can get one of these in the
Resort Village Shops.
Fantastic Spring Ski Conditions(**) on 72(*) Open Trails.
Give or take 1 or 2, there are 53 Progressives listed.
Please Note:
The "Progressive" list could literally change by the minute. That's quite a few "Progressive" or gradual trail
openings to be sure, but those are necessary at this
time in order to preserve and protect surface quality.
This is part of a longer term strategy for Mountain Crews to
keep as much of the base intact as possible together with
the Ski Patrol who actually certify the safety of each and every
open run.
Nothing we can do other than be patient as they sort out what
needs to be done, except of course, enjoy a day of early spring
Skiing and Boarding.
(**)"Fantastic" Spring Conditions?
Yup, Oui, For Sure... Why?
First of all tempurature. At a high of +7C, that's spring like
to say the least.
Secondly, wall to wall coverage of what is open. What that means
in practical terms is very few hazards that normally occur with
the real spring that comes in late March, early April when the base has
been reduced by thaw. There is virtually none of that today.
Thirdly, it might not rain all that much and there is even a possibility
that the sun could come out!
Compared To Last Year:
On closing day last season, Aprill 11th, 2010, we had 244 CM of
total seasonal snowfall and last year was a great season even
though it was a lower than average snowfall.
Today, our total snowfall is at 274 CM, so as of right this second,
we are 30 CM ahead of last years total, and winter ain't over yet!
Just 2 reminders of 5 days ago...
and why the base has a good reserve to work with.
This much Fresh Powder on Nansen.
The 2 samples above are why the Base is so good and why a day like today
can easily be taken in stride in the big picture.
The best way to cope with todays conditions is to have a Descente
Poncho and your skis or board waxed or coated with the appropriate
"Warm" wax which is formulated to repel water and break the suction
that slows you down with wet surfaces.
Then, go out and enjoy the day anyway!
Remember, the weather is forecasted to return to sub-zero temps
and snowfall by 7:00 P.M. tonight, so this should be very brief.
