Conditions 2/04/09
Posted: Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:23 am
.
Today will be a lot like yesterday... Pretty much Perfect.
The South Side was remarkably good with the energy of
the sun on it and runs like Tashereau, Kandahar, and
McChulloch were very, very fine.
The grooming crews are doing a lot overnight and the early
morning surfaces are of the highest quality possible.
These conditions are tremendous for building confidence
at all levels. Edge "hold" is a way to describe the ability of
the surface to withstand a Laterally placed load on it without
giving way, or allowing side "slip", say when you are carving
turns and you can really lean into the turns, placing all your
weight on those edges "holding" the turn.
Well, we have edge "Hold" by the bucket full, lots of, tons of,
as much as we can handle, etc., etc.
The abundance of edge hold in the Mountain surfaces means
at least 3 things:
1) You can go more places and rely on even conditions wherever
that might be.
2) This is just about the best learning environment you could ask
for, so if you want to take your skills to the next level, take lessons.
3) To improve, you need to practice what you have learned and these
conditions are absolutely first rate for "Practice", because you can focus
on technique without having to worry about uneven terrain.
No one would expect to sit at a piano and play Mozart without
considerable practice and Skiing/Boarding are much the same,
you will get better with practice, but this takes a time and focus
commitment. Today is a great day to set aside some personal
time for practice.
Of course, there is a very large social component to Skiing and
Boarding. Frequently, we are part of a "group" participation and
there is pressure to "keep up with" or "stay with" the group, which
makes practice difficult.
The way to handle this is to inform your "group" that you want to
excuse yourself for a while to practice, then do it.
Tell them you are going to work on your Mozart...
Anyway, today may start off a couple of degrees cooler than yesterday,
but the sun will quickly build the temps up to a more pleasant, easy
to handle -14C or so.
As a result of this thermal energy from the sun, I believe it will feel
warmer than it is, if you can find a sheltered trail-side spot to soak
up some rays.
