28(*) Open Trails on the official list this
morning. We're down by one, but under
the weather circumstances that can happen.
It's not uncommon to see the list go up or
down a bit when the full winter base is
not yet established.
The one South Side Trail off-line today is Onesime,
the magic carpet served bunny hill to the right of the
Gondola Base Station.
Todays Weather starts out at a more winter-like -6C but
todays kicker will be the wind, which is fairly strong and from
the North. That means it will be moving across the Summit
from between Nansen and P'tit Bonheur, headed toward
Duncan and Soleil. At these temps, with that velocity,
you will need to bundle up, seal off all potential air gaps
around wrists, neck, head, waist, ankles, or anywhere
else heat can escape. Kicker number 2 is the dropping temps,
which are forecasted to get down to -12C by the late afternoon.
With these nice cool temps, the overnight grooming will have
produced well sustainable surface quality for today. All the
usual precautions about careful exploration and speed control
need to be applied following the wee bit of warm from yesterday.
We hope you have fresh, tuned edges, they will always be a
beneficial asset for all control factors.
We have 3 very positive points to discuss this morning...
The first positive point is that yesterdays list had quite
a few "Progressive" or gradual openings, and todays
only has one, La Griffe, the Black Diamond North Side
run off the top of the Expo Quad Chair. This is a very
popular trail, so we're hopeful that will clear early on,
but generally, seeing the "progressives" go down like that
signifies that Mountain Crews have achieved the results
they're wanting and the Ski Patrol has cleared them
for opening.
The second positive point is that there has been a small amount of
additional natural snow, just enough to keep the Summit
Trees with a beautiful layer of Christmas White. Seeing this view
first thing in the morning before heading off to the Mountain is
always very reassuring. The third positive point is from an archival perspective, perhaps
the most significant, so we're including it here because it is a
very well written post that Tremblant.ca made on their FaceBook
page describing the Snowmaking/Trail Building experience, past
and forecast for this Pre-Christmas Beginning phase of the 2011/2012
Winter Season. When future Tremblant historians look at this record,
whether it be next week, next month, year, decade or century, we
think such a well explained insight into this seasons development
will be vital component of this diary account.

Courtesy of Tremblant.ca We replied to this post (as follows below), because the quality of
the information contained is a very meaningful insight into the
weather and logistical challenges faced by Mountain Operations
Crews. We know this team does their absolute best with often
overwhelming hand of Mother Nature. Despite the immense, dominant
weather factors, they still give us exceptional surface quality on
everything they can possibly open.
Archive Screenshot of our reply: We were fortunate enough to get a "Like" vote of
support for our reply, so we know there are others
who appreciate Tremblant's information sharing as
much as we do.
One aspect of this point above is that sometimes, judging by
the "We want more" attitude expressed by some consumers,
there are those who do not fully understand the size of the effort
required to produce the butter-smooth snow surfaces we enjoy
every morning. These may be the people who think that somehow,
somewhere, with the snap of fingers, that perfect trails should
magically appear, when the reality is that it takes the precise
co-ordination of a large team, working behind the scenes, to give
us these outstanding results, virtually every day, without interruption.

you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.
There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.
