92(*) Open Trails At Very Snowy Tremblant!

A Wee Bit Chilly... Starting at -26 C, but the temps are
supposed to rise quite rapidly to a much more pleasant
-11 C by this afternoon.

It's a good thing we like "Winter"!

Another day of "Brisk" Winds across Tremblant's Summit.
Again from Southern Quadrants, so moving rapidly across
from the Soleil Side, towards Nansen.

At these speeds which we would call strong, there will be
significant peak gusts and consequently the whole wind
thing could be responsible for the "Relocation" of any
more loose snow lying about or "falling".

This Pic. below illustrates what's happening in the Wide Open
Spaces. The snow gets whipped across the surface and the bulk
of it is pushed towards the side opposite the wind, however,
what we found was that all the little surface irregularities on
an otherwise smooth looking surface do grab on to a layer of
the passing snow and hold it in a way that almost seems like
fresh groomed. It's almost like the wind and snow erase
Ski/Board tracks in places.

It may seem as though the surface we're looking at above is
either very firm or even icy, but that is not the case. Windblown,
yes, but surprisingly malleable or soft, and quite capable of holding
a good edge where similar conditions exist on more pronounced
slopes.

Here's another Summit sample that shows a degree of this
"track eraser" effect from the winds. On runs like P'tit Bonheur
there were snow "sand waves" like you might find at at the beach,
very fine ripples caused by rapid winds over the surface.

All of it is very high quality Skiing.

The cold has rendered the snow into a very fine, dry crystal
and there's great speed and control over it, despite the rather
exposed manner in which it's being moved around.

So Much For Groomed... Now On To Natural Un-Groomed Surfaces...

The use of "Un-Groomed" in this example does not mean "Never",
it may mean since the last snow event, i.e. yesterday. Banzai was
groomed 2 days ago, and we suspect it may have been groomed as part
of a strategic preparation for this last snow event. Here you can see
the results. A beautiful base with a whole bunch of drifted in natural for a spectacular trail.

If you're a long time reader here, these two pic.s above help
to understand why this run is one of our favourites. Basically,
every time Tremblant has a Snow Event with a South Wind,
we get this.

Weather Trends...

Environment Canada Has Declared This Week To Be...

"The Dead Of Winter" ... which is defined as the statistically,
coldest week of the year/season.

Deep Freezes, Lot's 'a Snow, Blizzards, Long, Dark Nights
Lot's 'a Snow... Lot's More Snow... We really do Love Winter!

...you might even say we're "Grateful" for the "Dead" of Winter.

Would that make us "Grateful Winter Dead" Heads?

... or "Grateful Dead, Winter Heads"?

Looks like we've got another day or two of -20's C overnights,
daytime highs, mid-teens Minus C's, then we're looking forward
to an up-ward trending temp pattern for the foreseeable future.

Together with all the snow we have, and are expecting, the next
couple of weeks should be very sweet days at Tremblant.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Archival Apres Ski Note: Soleil was closed during the course
of the day today due to extreme wind/weather conditions.
If you review the previous few days reports, you can see
that this wind event has been with us for a while.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If You  "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
