It's Snowing Heavily In Pockets All Over Tremblant.
The Wind Is Moving Some,
There Are Other Areas Where It's Falling Straight Down
With Very Little Wind, like sectors of P'tit Bonheur.
There are very icy sectors that require extreme care,
you need to identify them and be aware. They are changing
by the hour with snow and wind.

This Preliminary Apres Ski Edit Is Brought To You By...

Tremblant Rule #1 (**)

(**) See content below for definition.

We'll have a more complete Late Night Apres Ski, with any luck,
by 11:00 --->>> 11:30 due to previous commitments, but the
essence of it is that there is a HUGE effort underway to restore
surfaces at Tremblant and the Mountain Crews are out in force...

Tomorrow has a high probability of "Very Fine" with a dash of
"Excellent".

----------- 8:37 A.M. Orig. Post ---------------

45(*) Open Trails Due to "Preserve And Protect" Mode
at Tremblant following a short, above freezing by a
couple degrees C, with a bit of rain, and then back to
below zero and snowing event.....

Wheeeewwww.... down to 45(*) is going to seem to some
as a big loss of terrain, BUT....

It's not necessarily a loss of any terrain, rather, it's a preservation and
restoration process that involves taking trails off-line to inspect/protect/
restore/refresh/groom/verify etc., etc., then gradually, as noted in
todays and future trail listings as "Progressive", re-open.

DON'T PANIC PEOPLE.... all the fine Alpine terrain Tremblant has now
has not gone anywhere with this short little thermal "Burp" from
Mother Nature, it's simply off-line temporarily to assess, evaluate
and then implement a re-opening strategy.

Relax... This hasn't gone anywhere!
Yesterday, Last Run, Versant Nord, the North Side,
Lowell Thomas to Duncan Cat Track.

Of course, the possibility exists that there may be what we would guess
to be a potential increase in the glitches or hazards in some areas
like some of the un-groomed natural trails, but the vast majority
of Tremblant's acreage will be a bit damp perhaps, then maybe kinda'
frozen or really "firm" for a period of one to a few days, but it will come
back, and come back just fine, thank you very much.

Until we get up to the Summit to verify, we think there's a good possibility
that due to it's higher elevation by over 2000 vertical feet and the consequently
cooler temps that were up there, that any effects from this weather may be
minimal and that the Summit is likely where it will start to snow soonest
when the temps drop farther down.

Last Run, Nansen Haut, Upper at 3:45 P.M.

Obviously, today's Apres Ski will answer a lot of these "variable", "potential"
or any other sort of guessing questions that we have about the weather effects.

In the mean-time, don't forget "Tremblant Rule #1"....

"There Will Always Be Good Skiing/Boarding
Somewhere Within The Open Terrain".

Mountain Crews take care of this, and no matter how bleak you may
think things are, we have never found in damn close to 40 years
skiing this Mountain, that this is not true.

Today, it may well be more of the fabulous "Spring Skiing" we had yesterday
afternoon, and it is going to be less than what we had yesterday in raw
open terrain, but non-the-less, it will be there.

Working with the overwhelming hand of Mother Nature means that all
us humans can do is cope and adapt, so get out your Descente' poncho
'cause you may need it today!

We look forward to exploring today to see exactly
how things are shaping up and we'll do our best to
capture the essence of it all in a wallpaper pic.
format in the Apres Ski summary.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If You  "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)

T360 Apres Ski...

There's a HUGE effort going on right this second on the Mountain
at Tremblant to restore, rebuild, refresh, renew, and generally
recover the Alpine surfaces as quickly as possible.

The amount of equipment mobilized and visible on the Mountain is
impressive to all of us who may be fascinated by the processes
utilized to create the fine corduroy we get to experience virtually
every morning.

We first noticed 2 Packer/Groomers on Expo, lower at about 3:00 P.M.
and that's early. Only very rarely do you see Grooming equipment
on the Mountain before 4:00 or 4:30 at this early stage of the season.

We were parked on Versant Nord, so we had last run up the Duncan Quad at
3:25 P.M. arriving at the summit at 3:33 and there were 4 Groomers waiting
and ready to roll with engines on fast idle...

Here's a quickie, stitched view of the 4 Machines
on "Fast Idle" just waiting to clear the Summit for
Versant Sud, South Side, at Last Run.

In our opinion, this may signify Both ...

1) The Large Total time Estimate in Hours Per/Unit/Operated/Acres/Covered...
2) The Significance and/or very high priority of moving as quickly as possible
to restore as much as possible, as soon as possible.

Either way, there's a big group of groomers working out there, including winch
groomers with the big overhead cable gantries for securing cable to summit
anchors to help control the vehicles on the very steepest of the runs.

A lot of the closed trails like this picture below of "Vanier", from the Expo Summit,
down to Duncan, had been already driven over by the Groomers who were
intentionally leaving them with very course, machine track cut surfaces.
We're not exactly sure if those course track cut trails are scheduled for
additional passes by groomers with tillers to break up the chunks into
fine particles suitable for skiing, or if the course surface patterns are there to
be a good substrate for Fresh New Snow to fall on and bond to.

Regardless though, it's very obvious that Tremblant is placing a great deal
of resources into getting back to normal "Billiard Table" Surface Quality A.S.A.P.

We wish them all the very best.

There were surprises in the Surface Quality too, Good Surprises of grippy,
high traction Snow of very recent deposit, within 2 hours. For example,
between 2:56 and 3:36, as much as 10 CM had accumulated in places
sheltered from the wind.

If you're looking for an opinion about "Should I come To
Tremblant Tomorrow, and/or This Week? .......

We don't know enough about the variables that could get you
confirmed open trail info for precise numbers, so we would have to say...

It's a bit of a calculated risk if you only want to come for a big
Open Trail Number, but if you love skiing as much as we do,
you will attend simply for the quality of the Open Terrain
that has an excellent variety of runs optimized for all skill levels,
regardless of that final open trail number.

Whether or not thats important to you is only a decision for you
to make, but we'll be on the Mountain for sure...
