12/2/12 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

20(*) Open Trails on the slopes of Tremblant
that will be quite a bit different than yesterday.

None of the weather drama we're going to have today
will affect the quality of the Skiing/Boarding other
than maybe speed potential, but it's too early to tell
on that yet.

With a daytime high temp projected at +4C, and
rain all day, this early post is to encourage the "Fence Sitters"
out there to come anyway.

Coverage, Traction, Speed and Fun....
will not be compromised at all with proper preparation.

The most important thing you need for today is this....

The classic, timeless, most valuable wet weather piece of kit
any Skier can have. The fabulously simple, totally effective,
Descente Poncho.

The worst that can happen with the Descente Poncho on, is that
you may have damp knee caps, but if you know what you're doing
with it, and have the brains to pull it down/over your knees before
sitting on the chair lift, you may not even get them wet.

All of the flavour... None of the calories....

or, in this case...

All of the fun... None of the wet......

You can find these in the Pro Gear shops in the Resort Village, we've
even seen them in the Summit Gift Shop.

Get one now, you won't regret it! ...and you'll still have fun all day.

Moving on to todays conditions...

Fortunately, all the "Cold Snap" weather we've had up 'til now is going
to carry the Tremblant Snow surfaces forward with comparatively little
damage as the Mountain is weeks ahead of average in core temp reduction.

There is also the possibility, particularly on the Summit and North, that
due to the usual 4/5 C cooler temps at the higher elevation, the precipitation
could actually be SNOW!!!

Maybe that's a long-shot, maybe not.

Anyway, surface traction today will be better than any day we
had last in last April's Spring Skiing, and it was good then.

The advantage today has is all the cold from the past 4 weeks
that's given us a well established base that will be resistant
to wet and we're forecasting will wick off a lot of it leaving the top
layers with high quality "Spring" surfaces for the day.

If you want to minimize any speed reduction due to wet drag,
wax or coat bases with "warm" range product you can get at any
of the Gear shops.

As noted above, the exceptional start to the season we've had so far
in both coverage and quality is unusual. Normal weather patterns for this
time period are warmer and would not typically support as much
snowmaking as Tremblant Mountain Crews have been able to do
this year.

In 10 days of this season's "Open", we've gotten used to this prematurely
stable winter pattern as Skiers and Boarders, Mountain Crews have relied
on it since November 4th, the officially recorded start of this seasons
Snowmaking.

The little thermal "Blip" we're experiencing now is minor for the reasons
highlighted in the above chart, so don't worry, it will pass quickly and we're
still going to be weeks ahead of normal.

Further to our last point above...

We Can't imagine a better outlook for early winter!

These below are from Friday. Important for reasons noted.

This one's quite unique because Friday was brilliantly sunny but the
Summit was in shadow due to Upper Mountain level snowmaking.
What's interesting then is the contrast between the shadowed foreground
and the very bright background, particularly on the distant summit
of Tremblant's Edge sector.

These 2 below are very important as they represent the second Official
Versant Sud, South Side, Summit to base descent path, the full 6.2 KM
of Nansen.

Nansen's upper portion has been open since day one, and they've been
snowmaking for weeks on the lower, so it's great to have it open at last.
It's one of our favourite cruising runs.

The surfaces of the newly opened Nansen were typical of the first day
of many freshly created trails that have incorporated large amounts
of blown snow in that there is a firm coarseness to the granular top
layer. It is still very skiable, and it will also improve very rapidly with
Skier/Boarder traffic and grooming every day. This naturally quick
improvement takes only a day or two and it's a very small process to
go through in order to have the initial coverage excellence to begin with.

This method of expanding terrain with the Big Bump snowmaking technique
is an absolutely brilliant process that virtually eliminates any of the glitches
that might have to be endured in years gone by.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
