1/8/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Mid-Night, Apres Ski... @ 12:20 A.M.

A truly unique, wonderful, spooky, snowy, smooth, silent,
swift and somewhat surreal day.

Temp's so easy you could forget about needing to go in
for warmth, temp's so easy you didn't need to wear
more than a couple of light layers, the freedom of not
being "Bundled Up".

The Ski conditions were exactly what we had hoped for.

Practically speaking, flawless wall to wall on the groomed,
so much so, that in the time we had, we never left them
because the grip at speed was so solid it just seemed like the
right thing to do was carve up as much as possible.

You don't get all that many days of so close to perfect surfaces.

What appeared to be icing sugar coating in the trees seemed to
extend all way to the Groomed surfaces that had an almost effortless
glide quality.

The Summit proper, was a wall of cloud, pea soup fog that
reduced visibility down to under 20 feet, but that did not stop
all the die-Hard Winter sports fans who came out in good
numbers to take advantage of the easy snow and temps
to match.

Tremblant.ca has not released a preliminary Snow Report for
tomorrow yet, so we think that's because the weather is a bit
of "Wild Card" and there is not enough conclusive data to
support a given number of "Open Trails" until about 5:00 A.M.

Every once in a while we have the luck and/or privilege
to capture moments that help define the Tremblant experience.

Our Theme du Season... Find Yourself At Tremblant!

Anyone who's a patient reader here knows how much we love
Tremblant's outstanding technical Alpine environment on it's
own World Class merits, but pic's like the one above, caught in the
quiet moment of long, late afternoon shadows in an uncrowded,
pristine and beautiful setting, remind us of some of the other
more personal reasons why every day at Tremblant is so special.

It's not hard to tell then, why a Tremblant Winter Snow Sport Vacation
can be such a magical combination of elements when you can add
scenes like this one below, all day long, to the one above.

We found these superbly prepared surfaces everywhere we went on the
Groomed trails at Tremblant yesterday. Not a glitch, a mark or a single
snow flake out of place on universally smooth, fast surfaces.

A very high probability that yesterday was the best day of the season, so far.

Glitches? Possibly, but on the Groomed, and with tuned equipment? We did
not encounter any. Experts only Un-groomed is a different story, but
understandably so given the Nature of Nature and the unpredictable
wear factors in un-groomed terrain. That's why it's rated "Expert".

Ride...?

Fear not, though, patient readers, for today may well be the best day of
the season again!

Yup... it's entirely possible that sunny or not(currently overcast, sunny breaks
maybe later this aft.), that today will eclipse yesterday for sheer, outright
Groomed surface perfection.

We talk about this phenomenon frequently, the concept that daily grooming
on a stable base is "Refinement" and today will certainly see loads of that.
Consequently, if yesterday was the best day so far and today is a refinement,
one can only logically conclude, today will be better and as a result, the best
so far.

Fortunately, this pattern of refinement and escalating "Best Days",
will in all probability, continue on for months!!!!

Our prediction, based on current trends and continued stable Winter Weather
patterns that are within Seasonal Averages, is that over the next 12 weeks,
that's 3 months.... there will be many, many, "Best Days" of the season
because of the escalating nature of accumulated quality factors that
add up over time.

We think that's pretty good news if you're planning a Tremblant Winter Holiday.

Of course(reality clause), Mother Nature could surprise us all, either way,
but at this precise time, there are no reasons to suspect that there will be
anything other than normal winter weather patterns, so we stand by our
predictions until there is anything obviously different.

Regardless of the whims of Mother Nature though,
Tremblant future trip planners have at least a few
Huge Probability Advantages...

1) Tremblant's exceptional start to the season with unusually early
deep frost and natural snow accumulation.

2) Tremblant's more Northerly Latitude compared to other regional
Winter Resorts that are all "South"of here. More "North" is always better
than anything "South" for "Winter".

3) The ongoing work of one of the best Mountain Operations Crews on
Planet Earth! Snowmaking regularly scheduled for this time, year in, year out,
is ongoing right this second and every precious flake is banked for future
use. The "Base" construction is remarkably thick and very stable, so anything
added, either natural or blown, enhances both quality and durability.

... if we can think of more advantages we'll add 'em here,
but really, do you need more?

The Weather Story...

Temps up to -1C today, so super easy to dress for
compared to -27 C recent mornings.

There's concern about the Blip forecast in temp's and we say ...

Don't worry about it... at all. Temps go up and down normally, so
when we get used to an extended sub-zero like we're in now, it
seems odd to think of warm, but it's entirely normal and we go through
this natural cycle at one point or another every season.

So far, the "Thermal Blip" is only going to be for hours. Here's
a copy of what we ran in yesterday's Apres Ski... it still applies.

"We've had a lot of Questions about the forecasted Warm Weather,
so we cooked up this Weather Network graphic and annotated it with
what we feel are the Summit Highs and Lows, Pink arrows showing
Day-time highs, Green Arrows showing Night-time lows.

As you can see the Summit's typical 4 to 5C degree cooler than base
level, could keep any plus value temps away from the Mountains
Upper regions throughout the entire time."

"The current Weather Models indicate that there is a frontal line, basically
around Montreal, and below that, such as Up-State Vermont and New York,
may see temp's into the low 50's F, or + 11 C, while above the line, temps
will only be even potentially "plus" for a fraction of a day, on Saturday.

Consequently, we are not concerned because this is well within/below the range
of January's normal temp fluctuations and we feel it would need to be much
warmer for much longer than this to be either disruptive or destructive."

A Word To The Wise...

That being said above, if you're planning to be here next week, take your
Ski's or Board in for a tune up NOW! If it gets "Warm", followed by "Cold"
there may be a need for fresh, sharp edges... duuuuhhhh.... so get on it now...

pg. under construction for who knows how long, but if you're local/regional,
we recommend you toss the computer aside this very moment, make whatever
excuses you need to, and escape to Tremblant A.S.A.P.
If you have the choice to come or not, you'd be nut's not to.

Today = Best day of season??? ...only if yer' here!

Apres Ski will follow...

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
