And this view, driving around to the South through old
Mt. Tremblant Village, was just the beginning!

The anticipation of riding up the Gondola only added to the
sense of excitement that carving up these great looking
surfaces could be expected to be...

Ton's of Soleil On Soleil!!!

A few days ago, in the midst of the short "heat event" Toboggan suffered,
but today, it is virtually flawless... Smooth, great grip and very finely groomed...

91(*) Open Trails on the 4 Sunny, Snowy Sides of Tremblant.

Here is one of the main reasons Tremblant is back up to 91/95
Open Trails today....

We wrote about experts, superlative cruising, icy spots, tuned
gear, fresh snow and grooming in yesterdays posting... you can
use the "Previous Topic" button, upper screen right to back to it
if you'd like, but the point is... today will be better than yesterday
due to the incremental refinements that occur as the result of
accumulative treatments of the Snow Surfaces that render a
finer, deeper and more consistent across the Open Square Area,
top layer.

On top of that, we forecast a relatively light day because as Ontario
School Spring Break is over today, Quebec School Spring Break was
done last weekend, the last of the regional long distance road travellers
are somewhere on a highway headed in the wrong direction for
Skiing/Boarding.

So Then... when you consider that the way it looks is like this below on
the majority of the Groomed Terrain(and this was at 4:25 P.M. after
"Last Run" at the Expo base, so you know it survived all day)...

.... You'll understand why we want to get this report done and
get outta' here to go Skiing A.S.A.P.!!!

You don't need any other reasons to do the same thing yourself...
If you can... Go Now... Right this second.... Leave Home, Run Away...
Sneak out the back door... Run out the front door... just get going....

... to Tremblant!

But first....

Just a few minutes before we took the "Proof Of Grooming", above, we got
this spontaneous action snap shot, below, and basically the excellent carving
grip being demonstrated is within about 5 metre's of the one above.

A Couple of points on the pic's in yesterday's Apres Ski and today's post...

We had a glitch with our main camera that was not the camera's fault.
Consequently, we used our way old Cannon Elph SD600... a veritable
antique by modern digital camera standards, but we always keep it
charged and some clear memory for just such an emergency, so
please bear with the noticeably grainy, soft edged pic's. We will
always endeavour to put the best Full, Big Screen window's up
because experienced Skiers and Boarders can tell with a glance, what
big pictures with lot's of detail or scope mean to the Alpine Experience
of being here.

Even though the old Elph's capability is limited, none-the-less we
still think that having the info. they bring is still presenting compelling
reasons why you should be at Tremblant now.

We think we have the other problem solved, so we look forward to getting
some higher quality images back on this page today in Apres Ski.

C'est la vie....

Also...

Yesterday we got more of the typical, uninformed, infrequent Skier/Boarder
"Icy" feedback on some of the Summit level South Side Trails, so off we
went to sample McCulloch which seemed to be a frequent reference for
this condition... Here's what we found...

By mid-afternoon there were icy bits, no doubt. Lot's of Skier Boarder traffic,
particularly down the centre, had scraped off much of the loose top layer
of the early day and left icy patches exposed on the main steep pitch running
parallel to the TGV Quad Chair.

If you had dull edges this would have been perceived as a huge icy sector.
Our edges are now 4 days of use since tuning and we've been meticulous
about avoiding hazards, so they're still quite sharp and our experience
was that carving was still possible, but should you be in the middle of
a carved manoeuvre and cross one of these icy sectors some, but not all
edge grip will be lost.

"Some, But Not All" is an important distinction because a person with good
reflex's can compensate quickly with angulation, braking, steering and speed
control to compensate... as long as you have the edges to do it with.

Of course, without them, attempted turns were frequently morphed into
tailspins in the 4 or 5 minutes we stood there to observe.

We're getting really tired of having to deal with this topic and we're not quite
sure how to get the word out other than one at a time to tell so many
uninformed people that Skiing/Boarding in Spring without recently tuned gear
is like taking your Ferrari out on the road with flat tires. No matter what kind
of energy you can make, there's only one interface with the surface you're
traveling over and if you want performance at any level of "Good", "Better",
"Best", you need to have basic tuning utilities done for the range of "Spring"
conditions that can have naturally occurring icy glitches.

Please tell everyone you know... and if you're reading this next fall as you
get set to book your annual Spring Break Ski Week... mark it on a calendar,
put a note on the fridge, tie a tag on your Skis or Board, somehow....
some way... a reminder to do this very basic maintenance that can
turn your days from scary to great.

Back to McCulloch... As usual, even after a full day's traffic, some icy
bit's in the centre, there was a band of very fine granular powder several
meter's wide on the left side going down, and to a lesser degree on the
right side as well. Using a wide traverse you could cross the icy bits
and turn in the soft deep layers of the trail edges and get down no problem.

Why people can't or don't traverse the whole trail to find the best traction
is beyond us, it just seems unreasonable to confine yourself to the least
ideal portion of the run when there's so much of it left to use that's in
very good condition???

Below the upper pitch, McCulloch was a pure Sunny Snowy Tremblant delight.

This review of McCulloch fits into the reference that we like to use here
often, which is to look for patterns in Surface Conditions, i.e., potential icy
bits on steeper pitches and if you find them, anticipate that if they exist in one
place, they may well exist in other, similar areas of pitch and traffic.

It's impossible for an individual to cover and report on 91 Open Trails,
there's just not enough time to do that, so the value in thinking generally
about how and why thing are is that by recognizing patterns, you can go
where you're skills are best matched. In this case, if you can't handle any
"Icy" and you found some on McCulloch's pitch, stay away from the other
steeper runs. If you're not sure where to go as new visitor, ask the Info
Crews in the Yellow Jackets with the "?" on the back. They know how to help
on the spot.

The Trail Difficulty Ratings at Tremblant, Green, Easiest... Blue, Intermediate
... Black, Expert are all well signed. Another caution is don't necessarily let
your friends talk you into attempting trails that are beyond your skills.

Todays Weather... Sunny with some fluffy cloud and a day-time high
temp at -7 C. A brisk Nor-West Wind will be coming across the Summit from
La Crete, Upper Nansen and headed towards Duncan and the big Summit
Telecom Tower. You will need to bundle up a bit to keep this wind from
stripping heat away, but in sunny lee areas, there will be warmth in the
sun for safe trail side rest breaks.

Potential Powder Alert !!!

For all those who can escape to Tremblant early this week...

There's a winter Snow Storm Warning for Tuesday...
peak accumulations estimated at between 25 to 40 CM's
of Fresh Snow!!!

The vast majority of Tremblant's Open Terrain
is in superb, very fine Mid-Winter like condition.

There is great traction and performance for all skill levels
right now and if you have the opportunity to be here... take it.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
