11/22/13 Tremblant Conditions. Opening Day.

Opening Day Apres Ski,
Winter Alpine Snow Sports Season At Tremblant,
November 22nd, 2013
Great Exercise... Loads of fun and a bunch 'o snow too!
The Skiing and Boarding are fine, just know your limits and take it easy...
Three basic descent paths.
1) Beauvallon/Summit to Johannsen/Resort Base.
Partial Circuit to TGV
2) P'tit Bonheur to Lowell Thomas
3) Beauchemin to Lowell Thomas
As usual... P'tit Bonheur scores all the big points for Snow Quality,
Groomed Smoothness, Completeness of Coverage, Carving Edge Hold,
All Day Durability, and on and on and on... Tremblant is absolutely
blessed to have a run of such simple brilliance. The fact that it consistently
turns out so well for every opening day is the kind of reliability that
brings people back, year after year to dial in those summer-rested legs
for the up-coming season.
Also...
It was an unusual, interesting, and somewhat demanding day, due
to a bit of heaviness in damp snow that was lurking
around in a few spots. Nothing that careful speed and control
could not keep properly harnessed though.
The problem with safe speed control was in a few mogul'd
spots where if you hit the zone quick enough, braking was
difficult for beginners/intermediates who may not have the
ability to stop or turn quick enough to avoid a launch. The face
of Beauvallon saw more than a few spinning, tumbling individuals
in this manner. The grey light did not help there either.
Generally, the North held on to the more winter-like fresh snow
surfaces, as you can see in the lead photo above, and the South
got a wee bit on the damp side, although in our experience, no
outright rain that we encountered at all.
The winds were moderate, and the temp at the Summit
showed as -1C. If felt cooler, and it skied as if it was cooler, but
that's what the thermometer stated.
There were some very small icy bits on Beauvallon's upper pitch,
considering the past weekends wet weather, you might have thought
there would be more, but... it did not materialize in any significant way.
Considering the weekends wet weather, you might have wondered
how they could open the South to the Resort at all, however, there was
just enough there from the initial snowmaking to form most of the path
that crews could "fill in the blanks" or "Connect The Dots" with.
They did a very fine job too!
Beauvallon Bas(Lower), seen above, was really really fast today,
maybe the fastest on the Mountain!
Below:
Johannsen had a combination of surfaces, but all things considered,
was fairly easy to navigate, even by the end of the day.
Good to see Regular Faces again, both Staff and Guests...
Last Run at TGV...
The Resort Base looks very Christmas-like,
and set against the backdrop of misty mountains
the colours really "pop".
Any Season that has Opening Day Top-To-Bottom, South Side,
has a great start. With Sub-zero in the forecast for the next few weeks
Snowmaking will be cranked up to maximize new terrain ASAP.
