12/6/13 Tremblant Conditions

Post by T360 »

T360 Apres Ski... Way Apres Mid-night ...

Preliminary, SUBJECT TO MORNING CONFIRMATION, Open
Trail List ... attached below as "Reply"...

Basically, yesterday was Hot. Today it's Cold.

To people familiar with the basic "Laws Of Physics", it will make sense that...
what was soft 'cause of "Hot", will now be "Solid" 'cause of "Cold".

To people familiar with Advanced "Laws Of Physics", they will know
that to control the Forces of Gravity, Centrifugal force, Directional
Stability, Manoeuvring Speed and Braking on "Solid", you need close
to Razor Sharp Control Surfaces on your Ski/Board. Otherwise, there's
nothing to grip "Solid".

As a result of the afore-mentioned, there will be some who found
today a challenge.

As a result of the afore-mentioned, there will be some who found
today faster than a Ferrari on track Day.

Every day that passes will be incrementally better for all Mountain Users
because Grooming Crews at Tremblant are the Wizards of White and it
simply takes Repetitive Mechanical Interventions to render finer and finer
surface particle layers.

The Solid Zones will Shrink rapidly each new morning.

Some of them may re-appear, if there's a lot of Traffic
concentrated into small/narrow spaces, but each new day
for the foreseeable future is going to realize big gains
in Surface restoration, and the reduction of those "Solid"
characteristics.

The Heat has passed on, and Tremblant goes back
to Winter Normal.

Before we get into the details, the Skiing and Boarding are going
to be very firm and fine as long as you have the edges to maintain
grip, otherwise you may find it very firm and icy feeling.

Now for the detail...

The Good...

The Bad....

And The Cosmetically Less Desirable.....

No, it's not the title of a Clint Eastwood Film....

That was "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly."

What we're talking about are Post-Thermal Event Effects on
the Alpine Snow Surfaces at Tremblant.

The Good....

Due to "Packing" and "Grooming" the vast majority of Tremblant's
surfaces are totally intact because they are well compressed over a
foundation of Frost in the Mountain that allows them to remain cold
for many days during "Thermal Events". They are in essence...
"Refrigerated" by the frost below.

In this case, we only had "Heat" for about 9 hours, and not all that
much, so we expect to see almost no reduction in coverage.

The Bad...

Any amount of "Heat" from any source, i.e. warm wind, warm moisture
can effect the top layer of a snow surface where "Warm and "Cold" contact,
so what we expect is that there may be some icy bits underfoot that initially
and for the most part are already ground up by Grooming, but may present
themselves during the wear and tear of daily traffic/use.

You'll need good edges to maintain grip and control. Without them, you
will not have optimal performance for steering, braking, accident avoidance
etc., etc.

The Cosmetically Less Desirable....

We say "Cosmetically Less Desirable" instead of Clint's "Ugly"
because the scenery at Tremblant is ALWAYS beautiful. In
Any Weather... Period., but... the heat has taken out the
Snow in the uninsulated tree boughs that did not have frost
protection like the Surface Snow. For Winter Snow Sports
photography, the loss of snow in the trees is...
"Cosmetically Less Desirable."

Pic. Examples of what we mean...

The day before yesterday, riding up the Lowell Thomas Triple
Chair, this is a sample of how it would have looked...

Nice "Snow in the Trees" Winter ambience.

The building you see on screen left, above, is the Summit Ski Patrol HQ.
The Summit Web Cam is located on the Right Side of that Building
overlooking the Lowell Thomas Summit off-load zone. The 2 Web Cam
snap shots following below are overlooking this same group of trees.

Below: Up until about noon yesterday, it continued to look similar...

REPEAT: The Skiing and Boarding, with good edges, is going to be fine.

The only thing missing is the "Cosmetically Desirable" Snow in the trees.

P.S. ... There's more snow in the forecast, starting Monday, so it
won't take long to get more fresh surface Snow as well as our
Snow back in the trees too.

Conditions Caveat:
As usual, after any kind of Thermal event, however short,
Caution is required on initial explorations. There may be icy bits,
so care is necessary until you verify safe passage BEFORE you
go ripping around.

Don't Forget !!! ... Official Opening North Side Base to Summit
Via Duncan Quad TODAY !!!

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
