Sunny and +7 C... Welcome To “Spring”!!!

Spring At Tremblant, File Shot From Last Season...

(You may notice this is a 3/30/17 shot showing full-on “Spring”
which we have not had the same way to any substantive degree
yet this season, even though we are now almost two weeks later
in the seasonal cycle.)

Today may seem like the first actual Spring Skiing Day in the context
of any seasons past, where “April” has meant a typical warming trend
that generates sequential days of “+” value temps and the more normal
Thermally Induced Softness in Trail Snow Surfaces.

Up Until Today... It’s Been Almost Exclusively “Winter”.

In addition to the overwhelmingly “Winter” characteristics of the
Groomed Trail Surfaces above, we would like to point out a significant
“Co-Factor” of supporting evidence for both the stability and
continuation of the excellence in coverage and base quality.
That Co-factor is the Snow-frosted Tree boughs that are very
nicely holding on to the very delicate “Snow White”, right on
up to April 12th. We like to point this out because of all the signs
that tell you the Surface performance is “Winter”, Tree Snow is the
Most Fragile, and Quickest Lost, when any Thermal source common to
Spring arrives.

Below: A Close-up as the Skier from above approaches and we
Zoom-in on the dynamic of the Snow Surface Performance as
Skis Pass over. This Snow is still predominantly “Winter” in
terms of its still relatively dry internal humidity, however, yesterday
we did experience hints of rising humidity in the snow that could be
felt as just a touch of very grippy softness when edging through
the arch’s of any turn execution.

At +7 C and Sunny... Today will see very decidedly developing trail surface
softness, so we expect to be able to take advantage of a more forgiving
“Shred” quality on steeper slopes as Ski edges are able to get huge amounts
of retained grip into the softness the heat will create.

The advantages today will have are Light Traffic, and a very resilient
level of supporting frost underneath, so we think it may well be a
Super Performance Blend of Spring Top Layers With a Firm Winter Base
that will be Mogul resistant for the bulk of the day.

Conditions Notes:

For Experts... Shred Up The Mountain To Your Heart’s Delight.

For Intermediates and Aspiring Experts... As the Softness progresses
in its effect over square area, you may find an increase in “Forgivness”
where Soft surfaces mean you can get away with small errors and easily
recover. Basically, the Softness reduces the chance of catching an edge,
and the increase in humidity or saturation can generate surface friction
that naturally slows you down a bit, so you may find it’s an ideal time to
try some extra Steepness Challenge with those two mechanical advantages
to help control Speed and allow very easily applied Control movements
of steering, braking and stopping.

For Beginners... Speed control and Braking Effort should be easier to
maintain or initiate with a wee bit of softness and surface friction that
great helps to reduce any “Run-Away” tendencies. You may even have
to use your poles to push a bit on the very gentlest of slopes, but that
is a great thing for the learning process as Spring Softness facilitates
an inherently greater sense of confidence in control when there’s just a
tiny bit of moisture induced friction. For that reason, Beginners may also
feel comfortable pushing the steepness challenge up a notch. We think
this is actually an almost ideal time to start learning or try to improve.
Not only is the Forgiveness factor at a high level, but it’s Warm Out too,
so comfort is a really big asset for staying out to work on practice that
will get you rapid advancement when you can really apply yourself for
the whole day.

No doubt, it got quite warm, up to +4 at the Summit, but...
no for long, and with what we would call minimal effects.
The best evidence of that “not for long” and “minimal
effects” was the very faint remainders of Snow In The Trees
at Summit Elevations on both Versant Sud, South and Nord, North.

Look at the far right hand side of the Duncan Quad Summit pic.
above and you will see snow in the boughs of the trees. This is
at after 3:00 P.M. and as far as we know, there may still be some
there tonight.

Virtually everything was shred-able, to various degrees.
Naturally, the most softness was at the Versant Sud, South Side
Base. The firmest was probably Beauchemin Haut, Upper, that
gets the most natural shade, even with the sun as high as it is now.

But there was one very unusual aspect to the Spring Performance
Scenario today... Speed.

There was something unusual, and it took a while to figure out exactly what
it was. It was one of those situations where everything seems to be in place,
yet you have the feeling that there is something not quite right. What was not
quite right was the relationship between Softness and Speed. Normally, when
things are that soft, the saturation generated by warmth and thaw also causes
drag resistance, but not today...

As soft as it was, we think anyone who was actually there today will confirm,
it was very fast, and very unusually fast for such a quintessential, classic,
Tremblant, Super Sunny, Super Soft, Spring Skiing Day.

This became even more clear on gentle terrain. Steeper Terrain is always
automatically assisted by gravity acting on a higher degree of inclination,
so Speed may seem more natural, gentle terrain however does not
have the same benefit due to far less pitch and that’s where the resistance
or drag normally becomes immediately apparent. It’s almost like someone
tosses out the anchor, except today, that was not the case, there was far less
drag on the plateaus and you found yourself ripping through some very
soft snow, but at a speed that just seemed very unusually fast.
Not exactly sure why, but never-the-less, it was super quick anyway.

Of Course... We’ll Take It! Soft, Easy Control, but Quick Too!

”Soft" And “Fast” are not a normal combination on the Groomed,
but the unique result actually made for a Super Fun, Fast, and
Very Comfortable day!

“Soft” and “Fun” are always a normal combination in the Bumps
and this shot below on the lower portion of Windigo is very typical
of the current performance Expert Skills will get you in this sector now.

For Tomorrow...

Mother Nature is apparently going to re-freeze things overnight @ -5 C
so tomorrows user friendly will be, for the most part, tonights Post-Froze
Grooming.
