3/4/20 #Tremblant Conditions

T360 Late Evening Apres Ski Edit, Under Construct @ 11:16 P.M.

It was a day of very fine skiing,

however...

Technical skills were frequently required over the course of many
descent lines to spontaneously respond to changing conditions
generated by rapidly moving active snowfall and windy weather.

If you look at the left side of Pic above, you may be able to see the snow
squall clouds that were moving across the sky. Periodically they would engulf
large portions of the Mountain, to the point there was substantial snow-fill
and in some cases, very substantial drift-in that was enhancing entire sectors.

When those snow squalls arrived they quickly deposited tons of
snow and made vision difficult, also making skiing superbly smooth
and soft with very effective control responsiveness.

Here is a sample of the “Active Snowfall” part:

Below is an example of a very beneficially snow-filled and drifted in
Versant Sud/South, Trail # 24, Ryan, Haut/Upper. It has recently
been groomed, but the rapid accumulations have quickly made
some small moguls appear on the upper entrance pitch from
Taschereau.

Out on the wide, open, trail expanses, there were some icy substrates,
but they were all smooth from grooming so relatively easy to handle,
and they got even easier as the snow built up during the course of the day.

The narrower the trail(like the “Ryan” sample above), the better the
snowfall retention was due to tree-lined shelter that prevented the
very vigorous and gusty wind from being as erosive as it was on wider,
more open spaces.

Below is another sample of that as viewed over trail # 16, “Fripp”
from the TGV Quad, passing overhead. It’s pretty easy to
see the very fine edge grip this Telemark Skier has in this
example. All the narrower trails exhibited similar high quality.

The tomorrow forecast is a very sub-zero winter morning, and potentially
quite spring-like afternoon with +3C’s and Sunny. It’s going to be a classic
Tremblant early March day and with the new snow groomed in, there is
substantial potential for more very fine, and like today, very fast, low friction,
conditions across all Skill Level terrain.

Above And Below: The quality in the Groomed trail array is universal.
Above, a Nord/North sample, and below, a Versant Soleil sample.
Both are excellent.

The Mother Nature basis for all the excellence that can be
found at Tremblant right now...

Above: We ran a version of this 2 days ago, but it was near last run, so
no time to set up for a Proof Of Snow and we committed to returning
yesterday for the measuring which you see above. There are still untracked
descent lines in the Sous Bois/Glades and the snow is still remarkably
light and dry considering the warmth that’s moved in. If you step off your
skis here, you immediately sink into the deep snow but you don’t touch
the ground, you end up “Floating” in it and Kidz of all ages can experience
a truly unique “Winter” experience. We would also like to point out that
you do NOT need fancy “Fat Powder Skis” to have loads of safe, totally
functional fun in the Sous Bois. The Skis above are 160cm’s Slalom Race
Skis and if you don’t think they’re any good in the Sous Bois, we invite you
to try to follow us for a run here... if you can.

Weather Notes:

We have decided to try expanding the included data info.
with a daily Stat’s block. Initially, we took this additional
screenshot to highlight the wind component that you see
with peak gusts at 78kmph which is very significant. We have
used this info. block before, usually to highlight early
morning low temp. and wind-chill values, however there
is a lot of other relevant data here, so now thinking it should
become part of the comprehensive daily weather data
archival record.

Conditions Notes:

Two Main Initial Points:

1) There is considerable excellence within all categories, i.e. Groomed
and Sous Bois/Glades, and all Skill Levels of the Mountains Alpine Snow
Sports Trail Network. Period.

2) Our forecast is for 93%, glitch-free, fabulous fast fun,
exactly as you see in our performance pic.sampes above.
The safe default position in the Groomed list is “Smooth”.
Everything and anything are way, way easier when that “Smooth”
is the basis for moving forward, figuratively, and literally.

Otherwise... Out of a preverbal deck of 52 cards,
today, about 26 of them are “Wild Cards”, and many of
those apply to atmospheric conditions only. Due to the
stability of the base in terms of the stored refrigerant
in the very deep frost level, we feel the trail surfaces
should be quite consistently high quality for not only today,
but for weeks to come.

However... When temp’s are so close to Zero C, when there’s so much retained
frost in the base, a modest 5cm’s of new snowfall, and a “Howler” wind
component with peak gusts of 78kmph/50mph... you might, maybe,
could possibly, probably see where a mix of any of those variables,
or all of those variables simultaneously influencing conditions, could
produce some unpredictable and rapidly changing characteristics in the day.

There may be some thermal generated and/or wind exposed icy bits, but...
they should be in recognizable patterns like over or just below crests,
or on steeper pitches that have direct frontal wind facing exposure for
examples, so if you are observant, you should be able to easily anticipate
where these zones may be. Avoid excessive speed in those areas.

Utility Notes: Any time the temp’s float around Zero C/32F, there
can be variable rates of surface friction. Waxing or coating bases
with “Warm” range product can vastly improve glide if that occurs.
Oscillating temps can also produce Icy bits or slick zones and well
tuned, fresh, sharp edges can make a 100% positive difference to
your performance capability. See the Pro’s at the Ski Shop in the
Chalet des Voyageurs, adjacent to the Cabriolet Base @ the main P-1
level for all these needs.

Page Under Progressive Assembly.

It’s week 1 of the rotating Quebec School
Holiday period, so busier than usual for
weekdays.

Even with the extra Spring Break traffic, the
Mountain has such an excellent retained frost
in the base that yesterday it was almost completely
mogul-resistant all day long.

We think that can hold for weeks.

If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

GoTo: Archive, Search Reports by Date: Index: http://tinyurl.com/yktelmu

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
