If You Live In Ottawa And You Wake Up Early
To Decide If You Should Ski Tremblant...

Do Not Waste One Second Debating... Just GO!!!

Basically, it snowed all day at Tremblant.

To begin with, it was sort-of a wet snowy-sleet and
we spent many, many runs wiping the icy residue
off of goggles. Vision was the primary safety limit
at times in the early day.

The Skiing was a wonderful window into winter.

The temps felt winter-like. The snowfall definitely felt
like winter, especially as the day matured into the afternoon
when the snowflakes evolved into these big, fat, fluffy,
high volume flakes that were building perceptible depth
on a run-by-run basis.

Everything we wrote this morning about the firming of the
trail base with the dropping temps was accurate. It was
“Technical” Skiing in the sense that the loose top layers
were fairly shallow, so there was not the extreme edge-set
angle that was there in yesterdays soft conditions. Today, if you
were an Expert, you had to be careful about how aggressively
you applied turning forces. That became less and less critical
because as the day progressed, so was the thickness of the new
snowfall cushion. What you see above is a later afternoon sample of
this increasing snowfall depth where obviously by now, it’s holding a
more angulated edge-set.

For Beginners there was an overall improvement because
the consolidated base was firm enough to be virtually
mogul-resistant all day.

Nansen continues to be an excellent example of everything a new
season wants for ease of executing control moves over a very
forgiving, super smooth, gentle descent angle.

Tomorrow is forecast to be almost a direct copy of today,
easy winter temps, more snowfall, and a continuing build of
the Winter feel that comes with a Summit -10 C overnight
and a projected sub-zero daytime temp range.

The functional difference will be the Ski/Board performance
that comes with an increased rate of snowfall accumulation.

We think Today Could Be The End Of The
“Spring-Like” Soft Fall Skiing...

A Review:

The following 3-pic.(#) sequence is now 36 hours old,
however it is typical of what the performance levels
have been from opening to yesterday. Very soft, very easy,
very high lateral grip and traction. Additionally, and also
very fortunately, there has been great natural speed in
these surfaces too.

Above/Below: Focus on the Ski/Boot spray around the centre of the
ski length. This soft snow has excellent grip and speed so momentum
makes control moves very effective with such a high degree of lateral
traction. That lateral traction is particularly evident below in the obvious
curvature of the inside ski that demonstrates complete engagement from
the tip, rearward.

(#) Sorry for blurry, soft-focus, water obscured lens syndrome.
This series was all within about 5 seconds in an active rainy bit.
You can see the rain streaks across the Skiers jacket in the bottom
pic., and the combination of overall grey, flat light and very fast
motion makes it difficult for the camera to render a crisp image.
Sorry about that, but soft as the images are, in our opinion, they
are 100% accurate in conveying the excellent performance quality
we have been enjoying since day 1.

Moving Forward...

Weather Intro.

It Is Possible That Today Will Be A
Seasonal Weather Pattern “Turning Point”.

It snowed a wee bit overnight, and it’s sill snowing,
not a lot, but enough to maybe signal a change in
the weather pattern that we think could indicate an
overall slant towards Winter, and away from Fall.

Anyone who reads extensively within this record will
know how much we dwell on “Tipping Points”, factors
that may be individually very small, but when placed
into the balance of seasonal progression can lead to
much larger consequence than they would have as
a single element.

We think there is a very good reason to suspect this
“Tipping Point” scenario is taking place today. The
overall temps are not that much different than they
have been, only a handful of degrees lower, but when
those 4 or so degrees just happen to be around Zero C
to begin with, if they are lower, they can make all the
difference in the Ski World we need, to move forward
towards more natural snowfall accumulations.

Weather Notes:

Regarding our intro. paragraphs above, look closely at the
2 week long range forecast below. Easy early winter with
consistent overnight lows, lots of natural snowfall potential
and for Tremblant Ski/Board Fans, loads of nearly ideal
Snowmaking opportunity, especially during those cooler overnights.

Conditions Notes:

We suspect that today will be part 1 of a 2 part re-set in
the overall nature of the Ski/Board experience as cooler
temps are likely to cause a firming up of the trail surface
base that has been predominantly soft and “Spring-Like”.

Part 2 will be tonight when Mountain Elevations temp’s
could dip as low as -10C, maybe, and in so doing, the
“Laws Of Physics” tell us that when you transition from
a day of +7C and rain to -10C and snow, there will be
definite solidifying in the substrates(You will want to
bring good edges for tomorrow).

What we hope to be able to show you in today’s Apres Ski
is the evolving changes in those performance characteristics
between the 3 pic. sequence above, as “Before”, to the way
we think it will be changing today, as “After”.

Stay tuned...

Otherwise, while the content of today’s reporting has been
slanted towards Expert High Performance Carving, we want
to expressly say that for Beginners, the softness has also been
an asset in the ease of both learning and practice over surfaces that
have very low friction where shallow pitches have remained smooth.
The overwhelming jewel in the Tremblant Green/Beginner terrain
has without question been Versant Sud/South Side Nansen Haut/Upper.

The shallow side of Nansen Haut/Upper, also referred locally as “Nansen S”
due to its shaped pathway, has held virtually flawless and uninterrupted
smoothness above and beyond every other trail so far this opening.
Usually, that status would normally be shared with Versant Nord/North
P’tit Bonheur, but for this opening series of days, P’tit Bonheur has gotten
more natural snow and with the warmth, there is just enough to allow
traffic to generate small moguls quickly each day and that has made it
more challenging to learn on.

Nansen on the other hand has seen nothing short of an extraordinary
string of days with absolute, reliable, smooth and easy conditions. If
you are a Beginner, Nansen Haut/Upper is a vitally important trail for
your personal development as a totally optimized descent. We have
written here over several days awarding Nansen with our “Trail du Jour”
award and it continues to deliver for all skill levels who appreciate
a gentle pitch for training the fine points of technique.

For future readers here we want to point out that the initial
weather factors of any season may favour Nord/North or
Sud/South, so regardless, you will always find near-ideal Beginner
conditions at Tremblant no matter what else happens. This
is a direct benefit of having opposite weather facing sides
where there will always be a favoured side to optimize and
you will not be stuck with having to make do with anything less.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
