Oh, it wants a wee bit of break-in, and it will respond very well
to the grooming night-shift that will refine it even more, but
all things considered, this kind of initial quality over such an
expansive square area is nothing short of impressive.

If you don’t think this is a beautiful sight, then you best get
a new optometrist because your “visions" are deficient of vision,
and you’ll need to get that fixed.

Please forgive our enthusiasm...

We have learned over the seasons to be grateful and appreciative
for the unique fingerprint of all the opening sequences. Todays
opening of Versant Soleil reminds us of that in re-experiencing
the realization that as early season expansion inevitably occurs,
there will be periodic highlights like this that spark enthusiasm
from the joyful sensations that a trail of this simple brilliance
can evoke.

But Wait, There’s More....

Lowell Thomas Sector Opening, “Rope Tow” and “Rigodon”,
Trails # 68 & # 69 respectively.

More on that in the morning.

Weather Notes:

The 4th day of KKkkkool daybreak...

However, there is relief on the way, and it looks like
a return to the pattern we’ve seen this Fall, fairly mild
but just on the right side of below zero C’s to keep snow.

Conditions Notes:

You are going to have people tell you it’s icy at Tremblant, but that is not
fair or accurate. We covered this point extensively in last night’s Apres Ski,
but basically, while there are indeed icy bits, what most folks are going to
perceive as icy is actually very dense, traffic polished snow, and they are
either on skis/board with very dull edges, and/or, on terrain that is too
steep for their skill level. It’s the “and/or” combination that’s the really
dangerous part. Additionally, most “Consumer” grade Lift-Line critics would
and will be far more likely to blame conditions instead of taking responsibility
for their own lack of skills or out-of-tune gear.

Here below is an insight into the vast majority of groomed trail surfaces at
Tremblant right now. In this example from late afternoon yesterday on Nansen
Bas/Lower, we intentionally have made multiple edge-sets ascending to where
the ski is in order to illustrate the grip level you will find in most places.
This is not icy.

The reality is that the loose top layers are relatively shallow as a result of going
from +3C down to -20C 4 days ago, so if you are too aggressive with speed and
you skid out, or if you have dull edges and are attempting the steepest pitches,
you will loose traction, braking, steering/directional control, or worse yet, all of
those control inputs, all at once, with excessive speed. Speed kills, and if we could
convey one thing only, it would be to remind everyone to be cautious in all new
explorations at reduced speed to verify grip levels before you go ripping around.

It should also be borne in mind that traffic patterns over the course of a day, can
and will change surfaces as loose snow may be displaced by continuous use. This
can cause the very dense base to become exposed, so if it’s been a couple of hours
since you were on any given trail, you should not assume it will be the same as it
was before. This is more likely around contour crests, converging trail intersections,
or in trail centres where there may be a lot of side-slipped traversing, but you just
need to use your head, be observant, and be aware of patterns that may develop
in similar types of terrain so you can prevent accidents.

There are massive snowmaking efforts going on in multiple locations.
Some zones are in close proximity to open trails, but at these temp’s,
there is only cold formed snow, so we have not had to worry about
plastered goggle lens, its too cool, the blowing snow is quite dry and
it just bounces off.

Please Note:

The key to understanding the potential of todays
Official PDF Trail Status document is to examine
the “Progressive” Opening category, represented
by the small clock-face icon indicating those trails
are not open yet, but are expected to open during
the course of the day.

That means today will see the first new Sector Opening
of the season...

Soleil Sector On “Progressive” Opening.

This is wonderful news, not only because we’re always
happy to have new open terrain, but in this case, the first
trail attached to this sectors use is Trail # 95, Algonquin,
one of the most excellent trails at Tremblant that is Officially
a "Green” trail, but is commonly misunderstood and definitely
underused. You could do a forum search here for all the many
entries we have on this trail, but the summary is that is a brilliantly
simple and very long meandering descent with several steps in
pitch angles that bring out its wonderful character when it is safe
to use a little touch of speed. For Beginners, it adds a third significant
learning zone that takes it light-years ahead of 99% of Green trails
in Eastern North America because your practice rhythm is uninterrupted
for about 5 kilometres without the disruption of stopping for a lift, so
typical of most Ski Area Beginner zones that are short.

There is a Caveat here until Apres Ski today, because sometimes it is opened
un-groomed in a raw au natural state, and sometimes it is opened fully finished
and as immaculately smooth as a billiard table, so we need to go there ASAP
to find out how it is, and then report back. It is our hunch that it may be a full
finish due to the significant snowmaking component necessary to open it
at this date.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
