It is an unmitigated joy to be at Tremblant right now.

At some point in your beautiful day, the Zen-like moments of
surreal natural beauty combined with the vast expanses of
immaculately prepared terrain should inspire poetic appreciation
in every Tremblant guest. How could it not? In a world that
often seems to have 4 corners of crazy, between politics
and pandemics, to find yourself so blissfully engaged in
the joy of skiing seems a privilege of extraordinary good
fortune. Indeed, it is a privilege of extraordinary good fortune,
and that is not lost on us for one second.

The groomed conditions are superb across all skill levels.
The Sous Bois are a bit more individualistic, but there is
wide ranging excellence in the Hors Piste and some
line-of sight cautions in the Un-Groomed Mogul zones,
so on balance, very, very fine.

As a Tremblant Trail “Case Study” that might illustrate both points from
the above paragraph, we are going to take a closer look at one of the
singular most popular trails on the whole Mountain, Trail # 82, Versant
Nord/North Side, Expo, technically rated as a Double Black Diamond.

Expo is so popular, we know people who come to Tremblant to primarily ski only this
one run. We have heard some of those folks brag that they have done 40 consecutive
runs on Expo, which we might add is possible off the Expo Quad with a ski-on low
traffic day... not to mention leg muscles of iron...

Anyway, here is the overview, taken overhead, from the Expo Quad, just
approaching the upper crest of the main pitch. What you will see is that the
centre has been winch-groomed, leaving both edges as viable mogul runs,
each with its own character.

The second shot of our Expo Case Study is a zoom-in close-up of a Skier descending
down the middle of the winch-groomed centre. We want to look at this portion because
it is the part that needs the most consistency in uninterrupted linear surface quality to
have a reliable, glitch-free, alternating turn descent without undue hazard or iciness.
(The outboard mogul’d trail-edges are not as critical because Experts using powder/mogul
fringes expect high degrees of variation in descent path characteristics, we’ll mention those below.)

Here is what you get in the winch-groomed centre:

For the centre of the Expo Pitch, this is quite near ideal.
Firm enough to grip, soft enough to shred.

Some of the beneficial tell-tale indicators above begin with the very
manageable shred depth of the loose, top, groomed base. This
skier is able to use an inclined edge-set angle of attack that is
totally and obviously working very well to hold the turn firmly in place.
No undue side-slipping here. This is dig-in grip ’n go, firmly restraining
gravity with the level of bite that is absolutely necessary for unfailing
speed and directional control. The soft dusty spray off the skiers right
ski pole is particularly interesting because it really highlights the composition
of the top surface layers. If it was really too firm or icy, that fine airborne
snow dust would simply not occur. Notice also under close examination
the few, fine points of bright light visible in the snow, which is sun-refracted
sparkle indicating the very light, dryness of this snow with close to zero
internal humidity, making it super low resistance and very fast!

It should be noted that you will see many Expo users who are less
than Experts, clearly evident by hesitant progress displaying what
would technically be referred to as “Stem-Christies” style turn descents,
punctuated by frequent tumbles. It is sometimes what you might also call
a “Dare-Devil” peer group right of passage. “I bet you can’t do Expo!!!.. ,
Oh Yeah... Watch Me...” This group are particularly noticeable when Expo
has recent winch-grooming. Everyone knows if it’s ever going to be close
to “easy”, fresh smooth grooming is as close to easy as Expo will ever get.

For the final point on the Expo Case Study, you need to go back up to the
top Expo Overview and what we can tell you is that in the Mogul Zone
under the Lift is about 92.783% excellent, however, further down about
3 towers, there are some rocky outcroppings. If your speed is not under
control for virtually instant line-of-sight stopping or instant directional
change, you could have an “encounter” with a solid Precambrian object.
The challenge is that these glitches are not necessarily visible from descent
lines above. It is for these reasons we say caution on initial mogul line runs
is warranted in order to avoid potential hazards.

Weather Notes:

Cool and breezy...

Typical “Winter”, so, bundle up and head ‘em on out...
Dig out some layers and make sure the seals and overlaps
are tight. There will actually be solar energy to be felt
wherever you can safely find a sunny, wind-sheltered
trail-side rest stop. With the Nor-West wind direction,
the wind gusts at the La Crete/Beauvallon intersection
may periodically seem like a freight train coming into
the station at full speed. As long as you’re ready for it,
it’s fun! Riding up the TGV Quad, may actually seem as
though you’re in a calm bubble with the wind at your back.
Cresting the Duncan Quad may seem like you’re in a wind
tunnel at NASA. At least it’s sunny, so what you’ll get is
Mother Natures power and beauty all at once!

Conditions Notes:

The vast majority of the Groomed array is fabulous. Period.

The Expert rated Black challenges, like this local favourite
Versant Sud/South Side Taschereau all have wall-to-wall
high performance quality with very, very little in the way of
glitches.

The Green rated trails are also exceptional. Here is a P’tit Bonheur sample
and not only is it excellent for Beginners, but as you can plainly see below,
when there is zero other traffic and it's safe, Experts can use this very same
slope for the tuning the best of technique refinement/development. This
is a classic example of Tremblant Up/Down skill level versatility in the
Groomed category.

The Sous Bois/Hors Piste 2 Part Update:

Part 1, The Overview:

The last snowfall arrived in very cold temps and not only
did that generate a very light, dry, highly crystallized result,
but the cold part was enough to permeate the existing
snow pack. Only Mother Nature could “Cook” a whole
Mountain in a few hours, and it made everything in the bush
a lot easier to move through.

These 2 above/below photo’s are 15 hours old. The far ski was
dropped into the powder from 1 foot in order to illustrate the soft,
absorbent nature of the very low density most recent snowfall. This
dusty, fluffy, low density snow is typical of what arrives with very
cold ambient air masses.

Part 2, The Zoom-In:

The little bright spots are sun refracted cold, dry, snow crystals.
They are light in the Hors Piste, and when packed and groomed
they form the main foundational element of the excellence throughout
the Groomed list.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
