T360 Prime-Time Apres Ski Edit, Under construct at 8:55 P.M.

We think our forecast for the substantial escalation of quality
was very well justified and very well realized, because...

For the benefit of Beginners and anyone else who appreciates
a relaxed cruising environment, there were portions of Tremblant
that were quite near flawless...

In anticipation of the potential for very firm conditions following the
cold reset from the last warm spell, we had out the trusty old F.I.S.
Slalom race skis that have tenacious edge hold over the most dense
surfaces, but they were not really necessary as Mountain crews had
done a fabulous job of mitigating solid into soft.

As an aside regarding ski equipment choices, we find that nicely broken
in, second hand vintage race skis are excellent recreational options when
“Firm” is the mix. The wonderful beneficial parts of that are even if their
extreme edge hold capability is not needed, their responsive performance
is still a joyful high energy workout that is always fun, as well as a personal
reboot of the technical skills needed to handle them competently. Additionally,
when they can be routinely found on internet trading sites for between $100.00
to $300.00 for well maintained examples with good edges and base left, they
are a bargain in performance for a fraction of their replacement cost.

Otherwise...
In an overall comparison to yesterday, the grooming refinement that
produces all day skiable, soft top layers went from “Select” to “Widespread”.
This is exactly the kind of coverage quality increase that is consistently
and predictively delivered after any major weather glitch. The progress
in rendered square area is exponentially larger within 24 hour increments,
and it may well go from todays “Widespread” to “Universal” tomorrow.

You may also notice more new snow. Not only has it
arrived during the course of the past 24 hours, but
even now, periods of flurry activity are still making
localized rounds.

While the flurry activity is fine enough, the real snow
contribution is coming from snowmaking, and it is
very apparent that there is a great deal of new terrain
that is going to be available very soon. We think some
of it may possibly be on-line by Friday?

We want to underscore our recommendations to regional
skiers/boarders who can escape to ski to attend tomorrow
and/or Friday. For the early season excellence that was
evident today, predictably greater tomorrow, and greater
yet Friday, it is worth every effort you can make.

Today’s Theme...

"The Right Tools For The Job."

Below:
This visiting guest from Toronto is using a very rare set of Atomic Skis
that are FIS rated, but more uniquely, designed and extensively used
by arguably the very best skier in all Alpine competition history, Austrian
Super-Star Marcel Hirscher. If you don’t know who Marcel Hirscher is,
Google his name and you’ll get roughly 1.3 million references. He is a
Slalom specialist and between 2012 and 2019 won 8 consecutive World
Championships(the most in history), just as easily as going out for a
morning coffee.

These skis eat “firm” and/or “icy” for breakfast. They are actually quite near
the perfect weapon for the Expert level challenges inherent in the current
mix of weather related base factors.

Very cool to see them on the Mountain used by someone who appreciates
what they can do.

There are transferable skills you can see from almost any
Marcel Hirscher You Tube recorded ski race, applicable to
every skier, from Beginner to World Champion, and he is an
aspirational ideal for us as students of advanced and refined
technique that acknowledges all the shared and useful elements
from competition. In this specific case, “equipment” is an
element of very useful value in these types of weather generated
“firm”/solid base conditions. Skis that have tenacious grip over
firm surfaces have a serious mechanical advantage and these
skis arguably set a Global standard of excellence in that regard.

The realy cool thing we like to point out is that you can find used
generic/similar versions of this ski on local/regional internet trading
sites from between $300.00, to under $100.00 CDN, depending on
condition and the vendors motivation to sell quickly or not. If you’re
an Expert who can handle the responsiveness, a nicely “broken-in”,
retired race ski can actually be an awesome recreational ski if you
have the muscle to stay on top of them. In that sense, these skis will
literally make you a better skier because you will have to work up to
their level.

This is not for everyone obviously, but for those with ambitious
personal skills and development goals, we say “Go for it”!

Weather Notes:

Todays weather data shows an unusual divergence between
the ambient wind speed and the peak gust velocities where
there is a very large difference. Normally, we’d look at the
base wind speed and say that was going to be the determinant
for the general level of wind-chill, but if it is actually as gusty
as this spread indicates, there could be extended periods of
“Bundle Up”, especially at Summit elevations.

As far as the long range outlook, what we’ve been focused on
is Saturday, where the temp and precipitation forecasts have
moved way up and rainy, and are now headed back down and
mixed precip. At least it’s currently headed in the right direction
for skiing quality for the 24 Hour Children’s Charity Fundraiser,
but... it could still go either way from here. What it does look
like in any case, is that the event participants will not be exposed
to a deep freeze.

Yesterday was supposed to be sunny, and there was some
sun, at least on a regional basis, however up on the slopes,
the vast extent of snowmaking generated a localized cloud
and fog that greatly reduced photographic contrast. That was
periodically compounded by periods of natural snow flurries.
Keep that in mind when you look at this image below. The
reason that this pic. is important though, is that even though
we had to “Cook” the contrast, highlights, white and colour
balances, as well as brightness and definition, it is the best
we have that shows the sort-of average surfaces we had
to work with.

Conditions Notes:

Looking closely at the foreground in the Beauchemin Haut/Upper,
Summit pitch photo above, you will see a relatively course particle
size which was the result of groomer action breaking up the solid
mantle that came from Monday’s +6 C heavy rain. This is a natural
and evolutionary solution which can take a couple of grooming and
skier use days to mature into a more refined, even and smaller particle
sized top layer of all day soft and loose, more easily skiable surfaces.

That is today.

We talk above about Expert Level equipment options for these
types of conditions, but there is one other equipment factor
that all Skill Levels can immediately implement for exponentially
more fun and control and you get 10 Gold Stars if you can guess
what it is... We hammer on about “Tuning” and “Sharp Edges”,
until we’re sick of repeating it, but day after day, we hear complaints
about “icy” or “ I got no control”, or other similar gripes about
conditions, and literally, when you ask the loudest ones when they
last had skis tuned, they can’t even remember what year it was last
done in. This is nuts.

Mountain Op’s at Tremblant does World Class overnight grooming
solutions, but humans can only do so much, so fast, when dealing
with Mother Nature’s huge hand, sometimes it take an extra day or
two. So, it is up to us as end-users to bring the right tools for the job.
We endlessly try to think of analogies to motivate responsible equipment
maintenance so todays is:

“ You Don’t Want To Be A Carpenter With A Dull Saw. "

We need to spread the word. If you’re a reader here, whack
all your friends on the back with a ski pole and tell them to
get a tuneup done NOW, before you all go to the Mountain.
They won’t believe the difference, and when they’re overjoyed
with their fantastic days on the slopes, they’ll be the ones
thanking you for your keen insight.

Otherwise, we do expect a significant overall increase
in conditions across all Skill Level terrain today simply
because it is day-2 of a solid sub-zero daily pattern,
and the bigger bits of yesterdays initial rendering
should now be smaller bits with another grooming
night-shift.

There are still wild-cards in the mix, so with that in
mind we’ll try to do a thorough Apres Ski edit ASAP.
We will also be doing an Apres Ski component on our
specific equipment use.
