24(*) Open Trails on Summit-To-Base Sud/South and Nord/North Sectors at #Tremblant .

Wall-To-Wall White Winter Wonderful!

We do not always get Nansen open at full dimensional
width, but this is one season where Nansen Bas/Lower
is the same width on its opening day as it will be on
February 10. Absolutely fabulous.

The opening day surfaces of Nansen Bas/Lower are a typical mixed
particle size as you can see in these pic’s above and below. Most
of them break up on contact and the overall traction level is very
good for any day-one. Due to the blend of natural and snowmaking,
plus the fact that during the construction phase there was a big
warm/wet weather event, some of the larger particles have a degree
of solidity to them, but they do not really effect the skiing performance.
In that regard what we want to draw your attention to is the carving
tracks arching to the left that we have zoomed into in the shot below.
You can see the same distant person in Grey in both pic.s over the
zoomed in crest.

These simple two carving tracks below may not look like much, but
they are the “Tell-Tale” signs of performance you need to recognize
the predominant level of lateral grip potential over the entire course of
descent on Nansen Bas/Lower that will fully retain skis laid over at, and
beyond, 45 degrees of inclination. One of the reasons we have awarded
our unofficial Gold Star Excellence Award(see yesterday), for the Opening
of Nansen Bas/Lower, is that we understand the huge challenge of producing
a trail opening of this immense square area, by its length and width, with the
complex nature of the mix of weather factors and how that has all been so
effectively blended. There is not one speck of icy that we could find anywhere
while carving the entire width of the finished trail for its complete length.
We think Mountain Crews did an outstanding job.

Nansen Bas/Lower should respond immediately with todays
second round of night-shift grooming, plus skier/boarder
traffic. “Great” to begin with, and with daily use and refinement,
literally better every single day. Within the range of all Skill Levels,
all Tremblant guests can find enjoyment here. Beginners finally
have a legitimately easy way down to the Resort Base, but Experts
will also enjoy it when a touch of speed is safely possible too,
because Mountain Crews have groomed it in such a way that the
snowmaking “Big Bump’s” of the original snowmaking formations
have not been totally milled out. So, there are very engaging and
outright fabulous fun contours along the way that generate lift
sufficient for fully unweighted “Air Turns”. We specifically refer
to “Safe Speed” because this is a Green run, but yesterday we
once again had to wait for a considerable period of time just to see
any other persons on the trail, so we can tell you within the current
experience, most of the time you are totally alone within line-of-sight
and that is when a touch of speed is safe and this other Nansen contour
character reveals itself for Expert fun.

It is our intension(#) to get some “After” shots today to compare
with yesterdays “Before” in order to illustrate what we hope
to find today with the day-two surface refinements, so stay
tuned for that at either Apres Ski, or tomorrow morning. In the
meantime, if you’re here today, no matter what skill level you are,
we think you’ll be as happy as a kid in a toy store with the fun and
quality of Nansen Bas/Lower, especially if you have the skills and
abilities to combine it with a fully carved descent using all 6 Kilometres
of both Haut/Upper and Bas/Lower in one continuous descent.
We can tell for a fact, that all 6km’s at once is a truly thigh-burning,
super-aerobic, SL style Expert workout. Totally Exhilarating!!!

((#) we suffered a slight left ankle injury yesterday in a
moment of over-enthusiastic performance that got a
hooked tip with a flip, and may have to recover that
for a day or two.)

Conditions Notes:

There are a wide variety of early season initial trail
opening conditions, however the acceleration of
refinement has really been kicked up within the last
week, so if you have not been back since opening
weekend, you are going to notice a hugely positive,
very good, and very big difference in overall elevated
surface performance. Granularity has been significantly
reduced or eliminated in most cases, so surface smoothness
has actually been quite near mid-winter quality and
the entire week has been a joy across all available Skill
Level terrain.

As usual, the principle Green and Blue rated descents get the
bulk of development work, so the primary benefit in surface
refinements and edge-set performance go to Intermediates
and Beginners so far. Experts have had to be content with lapping
and training for exercise, but the challenge level is about to
go up very soon with Nord/North Duncan and Sud/South
Taschereau, so the skill level spread of available terrain is
about to become a little more evenly divided.

The addition of the Expo Quad for day-one today, is
going to vastly increase the uphill passenger capacity
for the upcoming 24 Hour Children’s Charity Fundraiser
weekend so we do not see any problems with lines,
however attendance for the weekend is a bit unpredictable
due to both the event and the very odd weather forecast,
so all we can say is that with Expo running, Versant Nord/North
Side will have its maximum efficiency fully in place.

There’s More On The Way!!!

This is only one example, but it’s a big one:

Versant Nord/North Side Duncan - Summit-To-Base.

The visible snow inventory on Duncan has been building
by the day all week and what we are hoping is that means
Duncan may be scheduled to open at full width and finish
for its entire length. Last season, Duncan opened with the
top in great shape, but the bottom was a knee stressing
narrow, double black diamond challenge, so if the big bumps
on the bottom now, that are much larger than the ones
last season, mean that the coverage will be wider and better
filled in over the uneven ground contours, we support that
totally. Duncan has had some recent season openings in
immaculate, smooth, full width dimension, and we certainly
support that effort whenever possible for the user-friendly it
means to all who love it when it can be flat, wide and fast.

want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
