Beautiful, But You May Want To Stay
On The Inside Of This Window For A While...

At -35C, The Weather Is The News.

While this pic. above was taken yesterday at around 3:00 P.M.,
it looks just about identical today, except that little cloud
takes on a figurative meaning with the attached Severe Cold
Weather Warning.

-35 C is not a totally safe play zone. There are serious risks
involved with being outside for more than a few minutes.
Those risks are compounded by net airspeed generated by
your descent velocity which creates the effect of significant
wind-chill. An Intermediate with a descent speed of 15 KMPH
will experience a net wind-chill of -48C. An Expert with a
descent speed of 35 KMPH will experience a net wind-chill
of -53C. A 1/8 inch gap between goggle/helmet may generate
a frostbite strip in 100 seconds, and you will feel that for the
next two weeks. Please, Please, be very careful and if you are
a responsible parent, keep kids safely indoors until you are
totally positive, without any doubt, and absolutely certain that
your kids will be protected from these risks. This is no joke.

The only thing that helps to put this into perspective
is the “Big Picture”, i.e., the currently active North
American weather systems that include cold temps
all the way south to Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., so
we are not alone.

See all attached supplementary weather data below.

Conditions Notes:

-------- Conditions Caveats: -------------

As Per All Attached Herein Noted Extreme Weather Content.

-----------------------------------

Extremely cold snow is typically quite high friction(#).

Friction in snow surfaces is all relative, so it’s not
like it’s a hard push, there is just less glide than
when temps are in more normal winter ranges.

We always like to point out that these conditions
are a specific mechanical advantage for steeper
runs because of the net effect of a bit of automatic
speed control that simply makes steeper, easier.

That’s actually a good opportunity for Beginners
or Intermediates who want to practice skills
development on anything steeper than what they
are normally used to.

That’s also great news if you want to ski the
newly opened Versant Sud/South Side
Trail # 14, “Zig-Zag”, currently the steepest
groomed run available at Tremblant. Today will
render Zig-Zag the easiest it’s been in years
(#)due to the rather sand-like characteristics
cryogenic snow has as a descent medium.

These super-cool characteristics will most likely
begin to return to more normal function as the
air temps rise up through and above the minus
mid-twenties.

In the Sous Bois/Hors Piste and Un-Groomed, due
to the fact that they are all Expert level pitches to
begin with, and there is a greater degree of loose
top layers, the cold usually has less overall effect.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
