Super Soft Spring!

There are important details about the Versant Nord North Side example
of trail # 95, La Griffe that are common to the current run of very sunny
and very warm days here at Tremblant.

The first is how relatively thin the top soft layer is. Looking at the
Pic above illustrates both the mechanical shredding action under
the skis, as well as the side-to-side smoothness across the width
of the trail which by well after noon hour has not yet become cut
up into deep mogul troughs.

The second point is that it has not been cut into big moguls because
the frost in the base is acting as a barrier to keep those top layers
thin, so what we’re ending up with is this wonderful balance of
very skiable, soft, genuine spring snow, over the totally, completely,
frosted support of the base below that has been able to withstand
traffic without yielding any of the firmness where it is needed to
keep virtually all the groomed trails level and smooth.

The second point above that describes the very solid, very supportive
base substrates, has applied, so-far, to all 4 corners of the Tremblant
groomed trail network. Within the unique tipping point weather factors
of temp’s hovering around Zero C, the pic. below from Versant Soleil,
there were actually colder, just below zero C early day temp influences,
so Algonquin held very firm and fast conditions for all but the last few
vertical metres of the run-out to the base/lift.

What also continues to be noteworthy is the scope of the
groomed coverage. We purposefully chose this wide-angle
Algonquin entrance shot above to show the relationship of
available maneuvering space to human scale. By this time
in many seasons, there would be very evident loss of trail-side
bush snow, and/or, very evident restrictions in some trail widths
where warm sun, air and rain have worked to thaw expose terrain...

But Not This Season!!! What you see above represents an extraordinary
level of reliable integrity in the complete trail width that is currently typical
across virtually the entire array of open groomed terrain.

Conditions Notes:

Very, very close to ideal for any definition of “Spring Skiing”.

When you think about how April is typically characterized by
the usual reference “April Showers”, so far we have not seen
much in the way of any really wet precipitation, so even though
there has been a fair degree of warm air and solar influence,
so far there has been almost zero erosive spring rain. The result,
up to and including today, is a remarkable stability in the base of
the entire Alpine Snow Sport Trail Network that is being completely
supported by the undisturbed integrity of the 5 preceding months
of solid winter frost.

This frosted barrier effect has been almost impossible to
penetrate in the Sous Bois bush zones since the last 2 -20C
nights of last week, but after a lot of pounding, we were finally
able to get a ski pole through it for this “Proof Of Snow” sample
below. The vertical ski pole (at 122cm’s) below is a straight plunge
into the snowpack and we were able to push the handle below the
sight of view without touching the ground, so we do not know the
exact depth here. Let’s call it “Lots”. We estimate it could be anywhere
between 1.5 and 2 metres. We brought the handle back up to be visible
for the sake of the illustration.

In the Un-Groomed, the following pic. from Last Run yesterday
shows the soft top bump performance found in Versant Nord/North
Side trail # 80, Windigo, a very popular local favourite mogul zone.

The bumps are very solid, very firm, but there is simultaneously
a very effective soft cushion totally of spring warm snow top layers
with some variability in traffic generated buildups.

P’tit Bonheur, so very close to perfect, as usual.

This is absolutely one of the very best “Go to” trails in the known
ski world and you’ll see everyone from top level racers to never-ever
Beginners here all day, every day, for the very same reason, it’s a
perfect place to practice.

Any level of aspiring skier will benefit from lapping this trail
which can now be done on about an 8 minute cycle for
Intermediates and Experts by using the new Lowell Thomas
high speed quad lift that has revolutionized the use here,
and throughout this entire sector of the Mountain.

If you are a new skier researching destinations suitable
for learning the sport, P’tit Bonheur is a specific reference
that can justify your entire mission. Combined with the
other primary Green trails, “Nansen”, and “Algonquin”,
no matter where you come from in the world, Tremblant
can send you home with all the fundamental skills and abilities,
quickly learned and developed on superb learning terrain.

If you are new to the sport and you’re from Ft. Lauderdale
Florida(or any similar hot place), consider Tremblant in
spring as an easy introduction to winter on the warm side.
Without such a drastic difference in temp’s, you can get
a feel for skiing with a more gentle weather profile.

:) Bring Back The Memories... Research Future Visits...
If you would like to look up dates you visited Tremblant, or you
want to research days/weeks/months to visit, you can sample what
they look like historically, month by month, year by year.

When reviewing dates from any of the past, numbered, archived pages,
you can use the "Previous Topic" or "Next Topic" buttons, located
screen far right, in upper date/message bar to scroll through sequential
dates, or use your browsers "back" button to stay on the selected index
page for non-sequential date reviews in either forward or reverse order.

There are approximately 6, 25 day Index pages per season.

( If you "Bookmark" the link above, it will always take you to the
First index page with the latest posts. That gives you an immediate,
current to 25 day past, review scroll of Winter Alpine Conditions by
consecutive date.)
