T360 Prime Time Apres Ski Edit, Under Progressive Assembly At 8:39 P.M.
As Usual...
Wonderfully Photogenic Tremblant.
However we were a wee bit wrong on the ski conditions today...
12.12.22.Summit.La.Crete.Sud.South.Nansen.Nord.North.Ptit.Bonheur.Signs.Of.Sunset.d.jpg
And... maybe not so much wrong, at least on the potential,
but just out on the timing by a day?
Yesterday when we described the exceptional opening
conditions on La Griffe, as a sample of typical opening
conditions, we said that it could be “unique”. Well we
were correct on that, but incorrect on it extending to
today to such a high percentage in our forecast today.
It was icier today by a fair degree.
No fault of Mountain Crews either in our opinion, because
what we think happened is that the cold finally got into
the little bit of residual softness that was in retrospect,
truly “unique” to yesterday.
There was still lots of great performance, loads of fun,
but it was considerably less forgiving with a more pervasive
sense of solidity underfoot. It was rocket-fast.
Good, fresh edges were critical. Good, balanced, subtly applied
turning force was essential.
For Experts and upper level Intermediates, it was a “Technical” day,
however, for Beginners and Intermediates using lower speeds on
Nansen Haut/Upper and P’tit Bonheur for examples, it was super-easy.
The shallow top layers that were sensitive to speed, were perfectly
adequate for low velocity on lesser pitches. In that regard, Nansen
Haut/Upper was close to flawless.
There may have been a tiny bit of solar energy that gave Nansen
the user-friendly edge today, but the low December sun behind
the Summit was shadowing P’tit Bonheur and everywhere else
Nord/North.
12.12.22.Nord.North.Decembers.Low.Sun.Yang.b.jpg
The Nord/North Side shadows below the Summit made the
photography there a bit of a challenge as the dark relief
behind the Mountain is never easily rendered due to the
extreme contrast of the strong brightness of the sunny
blue sky overhead. Never-the-less, the rug-rats were
having a blast!
12.12.22.Nord.North.Decembers.Low.Sun.Yin.Shadows.c.jpg
The possibility exists that the refinement we had hoped to find more
widespread today may simply be delayed for a day. Grooming tonight
should produce a mechanical improvement by generating deeper, softer
top layers.

29 (*) Open Trails On Sud/South And Nord/North
Tremblant Is...
Fabulous Fun, Legitimate Smiles.
With all due respect, the entire recreational sports industry pays
models to stage smiling brochure shots, but whenever possible
we like to capture the real thing because it represents the authentic
experience of the moment. This was all of Tremblant yesterday, and
we think it will be upwardly refined a notch better for today.
12.11.22.Nansen.Bas.Lower.Fabulous.Fun.Legitimate.Smiles.c.jpg
Try counting the ways you’ll smile...
A great run of self-awareness and accomplishment,
A great run of fantastic technical trail surfaces,
A great run with family and friends,
A great run in easy winter weather,
A great run in the iconic Laurentian Mountain scenic grandeur,
The list goes on...

Expanding Open Terrain Development News:
They’r Workin’ On It!
12.11.22.Summit.Telephoto.POV.From.Duncan.Quad.Peak.Over.McCulloch.Snowmaking.c.jpg
A review of the snowmaking icons with the Official Trail data
below will provide the best insight into what’s next for more
open terrain. We may not have more snow until later this week,
but at least the temp’s are there to support large scale snowmaking
so we’ll take whatever we can get along the way.
One of the single largest concentrations of snowmaking is the
Versant Nord/North Side Summit zone including Duncan Haut/Upper,
Jasey-Jay Anderson and Superieur.
12.11.22.Expo.Quad.At.Tower.15.Views.Upper.Summit.Nord.North.Snowmaking.Observations.c.jpg
They’ll be a lot of very happy regional/local’s that are
happy to see this one, it’s a favourite zone for many
and a frequently purpose’d Race Training sector also.
Weather Notes:
Starts out chilly, but with the sun out so brightly in what is
currently a cloudless sky, it should warm fairly quickly and
end up being just cool, not cold.
One of the very best supporting co-factors for pleasantly
cool is the low wind speed to begin with, then secondarily,
the low spread between the basic wind speed an the peak
gust velocity. When they are both such low numbers, the
solar energy works so much more effectively at warming
you up. Finding a quiet, safe, sunny trailside spot to catch
your breath should yield warming sensations in less than
a minute.
Conditions Notes:
Considering all the whacky up/down’s of the past week’s
warm/wet, cool/cold cycles, the trail conditions are genuinely
fantastic for this date in the still-new season.
93.447% of the trail surfaces are not icy. If you have dull edges,
you may perceive that as a higher percentage, but the reality is
that the base, as firm as it is, is in the vast majority, just very
densely packed snow with the daily produced soft top layers
of groomed cover.
Yesterday’s Apres Ski featured a mini trail review of Versant Nord,
North Side # 94, La Griffe, which for any opening in history is
very, very fine. To be objective, there is a rocky hazard zone posted
at the upper entrance that covers about a 6 or 7 linear metre area
where there are small stones that came to the surface from grooming,
however, the left descending side had a lot fewer so if you were
careful, it was possible to get around this area with minimal risk.
Beyond that, La Griffe was as close to flawless as you’d ever find
it, not only for opening, but even compared to mid-winter. There
was exceptionally reliable turning grip for each and every turn,
from top to bottom, without so much as a single glitch between. Period.
This type of very high quality opening experience has become
far more consistently achievable over recent seasons and for
a similar example of great opening surfaces we’d also include
Nord/North trail # 61, Duncan Bas/Lower, as only one more of many.
Moving on...
For reasons we are not exactly sure of, Nansen Bas/Lower is shown
as closed for today.
It is not because there is anyting wrong with the trail, it is in
excellent full dimensional shape, so if we had to guess, it
might be for some reason surrounding the removal of the
vast infrastructure for the 24 Hour Event that requires
a lot of heavy equipment moving large pallets of steel
framing from the site between the Flying Mile Quad and
the Gondola? Maybe? If you look at the Official Data below,
there is a large “D” beside the Flying Mile Quad and we
suspect that “D”elay is part of the situation.
It is possible that the Open Trail List could change during
the course of the day ??
12.11.22.Summit.Info.Ski.At.Lowell.Thomas.Where.Are.You.c.jpg
The restoration of full access after the largest single event for the
entire season may understandably be direct function of labour and
machine hours, so there’s only one thing to do and that is ask any
Info.Ski team member for current utility status of any trails or lifts.
They are “Radio Controlled” and logistical updates are broadcast to
their team as they happen.

Wild Turkey Attack Alert:
12.11.22.Duncan.Quad.Views.Roaming.Wild.Turkey.Hazard.b.jpg
There are roaming flocks of Wild Turkey’s at Tremblant,
especially noticeable on the lower Versant Nord/North
where descending on Fuddle-Duddle Bas/Lower, we
experienced an aggressive bird assault while making
carved turns close to the trail-side on the right.
Fortunately we had enough speed and traction to make
an instantaneous evasive maneuver, however it was still
a close call and evidently the bird was surprised and felt
threatened as it made a very clear effort to charge at us
as we passed by. By the time we got stopped a safe 15
metres or so away to get camera out, they were long gone
into the bush. Two rides up the Duncan Quad later, we saw
this group you see photo’d here.
Watch out for Turkey’s. Don’t let curious little kids approach
them. They may look cute(? not really), or interesting, but to
them, you are invading their space and they will not give any
notice for a sudden pecking attempt if you get too close.
If you see them, give them as much clear passing space away
from them, the same as if saw any other wild animal, like a
Racoon, for example. They live in the Sous Bois/Bush where
they forage for food, but they can be found in numbered groups
using trails, especially the edges, as pathways so watch out.
These birds were re-introduced into the wild in Quebec back
in 2000, and obviously they have been very successful in
their survival and multiplication. For the most part, they will
leave you alone if you leave them alone, but they do not always
or necessarily interface with humans well.
