T360 Apres Midnight, Quickie Apres Ski Edit @ 12:17 A.M.

Unfortunately there was a date entry glitch in the Official
Trail Status and the Versant Nord/North Trail # 66, groomed
icon status was incorrect. The lower entrance approach has
been groomed for weeks, but the the groomed icon has never
been shown, until this morning, indicating the main descent
was finally done as typically follows grooming on #’s 64 and 65.
It was very firm and it is a top-level Expert, difficult, big bumps
challenge. Maybe tomorrow?

On the flip-side, Ryan Bas/Lower was really very good with soft warm
bumps so for those keen mogul fans, it was a high-point for the day
and thoroughly appreciated.

The Story Of Confident Learning Skills:

We often write about the need of “Confident Learning Skills”
as a component of aspirational skier attitude. This is a sport
that wants you to not be timid. A positive, and assertive attitude
is a vital part of learning because it is such a physically pure
effort that is needed to improve.

Some people would never dream of skiing Marie-Claude Asselin(#64)
when faced with the huge irregular bumps it’s had until the day
before last, but now, thanks to Mountain Op’s, our friends from
St Bruno can go here with a little encouragement and discover just
how beautiful it is, as well as all the satisfaction of accomplishment
that comes from being able to do it well.

A Whole New Window Of Spectacular Tremblant Beauty And
Technical Merit Opens Now.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

Superb Seasonal Apex Of Universal Coverage And Quality.

Symbolic of the very most focused point of seasonal
groomed trail refinements, today we have the absolute
best possible and most definitively tangible evidence,
the freshly first time groomed for the whole season, #66,
Le Tunnel, Versant Nord/North Side, Lowell Thomas Sector.

A “Sweetheart” Valentines Day gift to all Front-Side Groomed
Tremblant Fans who seriously appreciate the technical merit
of a very close to perfect fall line descent of rolling Pre-Cambrian
topography that quite simply comes alive, only when groomed.

Normally this trail is a knee-eating VW Bug-sized mogul line,
but today, it’s character changes completely to the smooth
flow of a granite river that is covered, levelled, and both horizontally
and longitudinally equalized with 4.5 Metres of all natural snowfall,
without so much as a single spec of blown snow.

Most casual, “consumer” recreational skiers may never go here,
they may never know it even exists, but their entire Mountain
experience will be the better for it because it is exactly when
this trail is groomed that you KNOW the resources are there
in sufficient quantity to produce extraordinary quality over
the entire Mountains groomed trail network. Period.

With reference to both specific # 66, and generally to the
entire groomed trail network, here is an attempt at explanation.
The vertical ski pole you see here could have been pushed
below the surface. That’s over 122 cm’s of free depths of
snowfall immediately beside a groomed trail that has the
consolidated packed stratifications of the whole season,
where virtually every single snowflake has been carefully
compressed into a most durable mantle over the complete
groomed trail network. This scene is within 30 lateral metres
from the topographical peak of Le Tunnel.

(We have no idea what the actual depth here is. It was getting
difficult to push due to the basket encountering deep layers
of snow that over time have compressed under their own weight.
Additionally, we wanted to leave the handle visible for the sake
of the illustration. Suffice to say “a lot”. )

Otherwise and generally, due to the closeness to Zero C at
elevations plus the sun-shaded Nord/North, there are distinct
variations of conditions where the Sud/South experiences
softness and the Nord/North retains firmness. This is neither
good or bad, just different, because both are good and both are
simply requiring adjustments to take advantage of their unique
benefit.

For today, the Groomed summary can only be:

Average Is Excellent.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:

A far more complex variation of vastly different situations
made at least partially by this:

What you see below is exactly what we wrote about yesterday.
The ski brakes are fully supporting the weight of the skis on
the sheet of ice that is just under the snow surface. On top of the ski
is a fragment of the ice sheet. This sheet is a Mother Nature moulded
membrane from the last freezing rainy bit covering this entire open
Sous Bois zone. At the very same time, you can see the vertical ski
pole handle behind the skis is pushed over a metre directly into the
undisturbed ambient snow accumulation.

Once your ski tips are below this ice sheet, if you are moving, it is
near impossible to break back upwards from.

This means extreme caution is warranted wherever traffic has
not broken it up to establish tracked patterns of use. The moguls
of the Un-Groomed can be influenced by all these factors in
almost infinite ways so you just need to be an authentic Expert
and go with caution and care because there are significant
and difficult challenges. The Ski Patrol has hand-posted notices,
so take those signs with serious respect.

2.13.23.Lowell.Thomas.Trail.Side.Sous.Bois.Observations.e.jpg (1.4 MiB) Viewed 3234 times

It should be noted that where traffic has well established
patterns of use, the Un-Groomed, Trail # 80 Nord/North
Windigo for only one example, can have very fine natural
mogul conditions.

Explore responsibly.

Please Note: There can be and are, rare examples of excellence
as recorded in yesterday’s report referring to Ryan Bas/Lower.
In this case the combination of high quality base coverage with
the mid-to-late day sun-warmed softness of the lower Versant
Sud/South side zone produced extraordinarily fine Expert,
un-groomed performance.

Due to the fingerprint of recent weather cycles...

The Jewels In The Crown May Be The Groomed,
Including The Metaphorically Hidden Gems Of
Featured Treasure, But Overall It’s An Important Repeat:

“Average Is Excellent”.
