It Snow’d A Big Bunch Last Night...
And It’s Still Snowing Now.
1.1.25.Taschereau.Snowy.Conditions.a.jpg
The snowfall has been, and continues to be, delivered by
a very vigorous wind with prolonged gusting characteristics
that have already made for unique wind shaped zones of both
great accumulation as well as some frontal facing exposures
that are getting blown into the bush.
You’ll really need to pay attention to patterns and default to
lower skill level terrain until you are very confident working
with the variable challenges that may be encountered.
Weather Notes:
The warm spell is on its way out and the return of a very typical
dip in the temp’s is forecast to be moving in. Easy enough for
today, but for those attending over the next week, bring all
the layers you got ‘cause you are most likely goin to need them,
especially with the kinds of potential wind chill values that might
happen with the wind speeds indicated.
Great Grooming Conditions Sample:
1.1.25.TGV.Quad.Views.McCulloch.Summit.Pitch.d.jpg
Conditions Notes:
In The Groomed:
Very fine to excellent within all skill level ratings, however...
14 cm’s is slightly above what we refer to as a “One Pass”(#)
overnight, optimized grooming compacted density standard,
so the top layers where the wind shaping and accumulation depths
are most evident may be prone to softness, and after traffic
begins to flow, prone to eventual mogul formations.
((#) Completely density optimized one pass groomed snowfall
depths are just around 10cm’s, so when it snows more that that
it can take a second overnight grooming cycle to achieve a
more more mogul resistant level of top layer surface firmness.
Of course, every snowflake counts, so it’s a "happy problem"
and an opportunity to learn how to adapt and improve with
additional challenge.)
There will also be zones where the wind shaping had lesser
accumulations and in those areas grooming will have more
durable all-day smoothness and consistent surfaces.
For those reasons we recommend a slow and cautious warmup
for Beginners and Intermediates on basic terrain that is very
easily within, or below their challenge level, before adding either
steepness or speed challenge in order to prioritize safety first.
Be observant and look for patterns of ideal utility, practice
within those areas and work up carefully. When exploring
new terrain, do so under slow initial speeds and always be
prepared to stop for “reset” in order to avoid uncontrollable
speed buildup under gravitational pull.
In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades And Un-Groomed:
When is snows 14 cm’s and we don’t see immediate reopens,
that’s usually an indication that Ski Patrol assessments are
not yet complete. We might anticipate that the Open Trail
list could be subject to revision during the course of the day.
For the latest news, which could be quickly changing, even
on a run-by-run basis, check with the Summit level Info. Ski
crews at the Gondola Offload station who will have up to the
minute updates on trail opens.
Pay Attention To All Hand Posted Ski Patrol Signage... for
both Open terrain as well as hazard safety. Do not ignore
posted “Closed” terrain signage.
