What A Difference A Day Makes!

Wow, from the very difficult conditions of Wednesday
with the cold, slick, icy, unbelievably windy whacky day,
yesterday was a hugely positive, dramatically improved
skiing experience in every category, across every sector
of open terrain.

Smooth, fast, very consistent grip and traction were
the the common traits over the vast majority of surfaces.

We expect to see an even higher, elevated level of that
type of refinement today.

That is not to say it was perfect though, there were some
unusually icy zones that lost their groomed soft layers
very quickly and left some rather large tracts of icy.
One example was Versant Nord/North Side Rope Tow,
off the top of the Lowell Thomas Quad. The top pitch,
just below the Summit entrance became a side-to-side
exposed base icy patch and folks who had obviously not
been there before were coming on to it with way too much
speed(#) only to find no lateral grip and there were tumbles
there happening every few seconds.

We are often accused of being too rosy in our assessments
so while we are including this sample glitch in order to be
objective, as well as to underscore our point about (#)exploring
cautiously, we also need to say that these icy bits were
isolated and not in any way indicative of the overall quality.
We do however, need to acknowledge there may be lingering
examples of that today, we just think they will be smaller and
there should be a lot less.

New Trail Development News:

We’ve gotten a lot of enquiries about Expo as the
big bump snowmaking started before Christmas
so naturally all the Expo fans out there are very
anxious to know when they could expect to see
it open. The truth is, we don’t know exactly, but
what we’re happy to report this morning is that
Expo has gone from all big bumps from
top-to-bottom....

...to having the very first rough-cut initial grooming
operations starting on Expo Bas/Lower, this morning.

Weather Notes:

Today is easy, and the next week is easy, so if you
have discretionary planning capability, act accordingly.

Conditions Notes:

In The Groomed:

Yesterday saw exceptional overnight improvement in
over 80% of the Groomed inventory that could see even
higher levels of refinement today.

We are very glad to see that the tune-up work on
Nansen Bas/Lower and Beauchemin Bas/Lower,
looks like it has been completed as both of those
very important access corridors are indicated as
reopened today.

In The Sous Bois/Hors Piste/Glades and Un-Groomed:

Very individualistic with variable Expert challenge
but very good for early season with some normal
hazard caveats appropriate for any mid-January.

Here are 2 Versant Nord/North Side samples:

Generally:

It is the first Weekend Saturday after the Holiday period
so we think it could be a busy day with a lot of regional
weekend warriors out to enjoy all the expanded terrain
and fresh snow that’s happened in the last week. Take
a deep breath, be patient and relax if there are lift lines.
