Open Alpine Skiing Snow Surfaces At Tremblant
Were Soft, High Traction And Fast!

The challenge was atmospheric conditions that
made it very difficult to enjoy them.

We were wrong on our hope that the trend we’ve observed
would produce snow at elevations. It was a sleety-misty-rainy
mix, with the emphasis on “Sleety”. What that means is that
it was not erosive, i.e., it was insufficient in either temp or
volume to wash the uninsulated snow out of the trees at
Summit and upper levels.

No doubt, at Sud, South base levels, it has been a rainy day.
Intensity has been somewhat variable, but temps have not risen
to more than +1C, so it could have been a lot worse.

There was less elevation spread than normal, so the Summit
has seen some warmth too, but not for long as temps are
forecast to drop through the day on Monday, and remain
Sub-Zero all week.

Versant Nord was closed just after the noon hour due to what
we understand was a problem on Duncan with ice jamming
an anti-friction function in the cable-grips. Lowell Thomas
came back on-line after a brief delay.

Vision and personal dryness were the big issues for individuals.
It was near impossible to remain dry without a Poncho or similar.

The Skiing was fine, but difficult to enjoy if soaking wet, and
you could tell by the large numbers of Poncho-wearing Racers,
Coaches, Mountain Crews, and Experienced Skiers, that there
were many who were well prepared and making the best of the day.

The forecast is rain to stop in early A.M., as temps drop,
and becoming snow.

The weather was inconvenient for sure, but not destructive in any
significant way, so we expect a quick recovery from this totally
normal Fall weather.

28(*) Open Trails.

This Is What We Did All Day At Tremblant.

Today Forecast: Encore/Same
(**)

(**) Notwithstanding Weather Warnings Attached Below
which we feel have a good possibility of being snow on
the Mountain.

Conditions For Skiing/Boarding should receive an incremental
improvement with a stable -5C overnight, another grooming
night shift, and another light snowfall. The conditions for
photography remain largely overcast, but in its way, the
scenery is naturally "Black And White", spectacular.

All three of these lead pic’s today come from the same spot
on Versant Nord, the North Side, Beauchemin Haut, Upper,
between Andy Moe and Axle. This portion of Beauchemin
has consistently delivered exceptional qualities of grip and
smoothness that have allowed mixed Skill Levels plenty of
space to perform well together.

Even though the focus is a bit soft on the one below, it does
illustrate the degree of softness and volume of loose top layers
that even with a busy weekend day, remained similar all day long.

Weather Notes:

The keys to understanding the Weather Warnings today are the
direction and timing. First, the direction is West to East. Secondly,
the time focus for Tremblant is this morning, so the validity ends
mid-day for us as the system quickly moves towards the Atlantic Ocean.

As far as the regular weather forecast is concerned, we feel
there is a very good possibility that the rain forecast for the
Sud, South, Resort Base Level when the daytime high temp.
is projected at +2C, could be mostly, if not all, Snowfall on
the typically -4C cooler Mountain Elevations.

Over the course of the last 2 weeks or more, the actual temps
reached have been slightly lower, cooler than forecast, so if that
pattern was to happen again today, it would be even more positive
for the possibility of snow.

Conditions Notes:

------------- Conditions Caveat: -----------------
There are areas of natural hazards in the run-outs
from the newly opened Un-Groomed Versant Nord,
North Side Trails within the Lowell Thomas Sector.

The chute coming down from Banzai, MCA and
Le Tunnel is one of these areas that needs very
slow speeds to safely navigate. Extreme caution is
required in these area with every descent because
traffic is evolving the hazards with repeated passages.

------------ end of Caveat ------------------

Obviously, with a “Wild Card” forecast, almost anything could
change, so we need to start with that additional Caveat, however...

So far, in the very brief beginning of this season, the actual
temps. have consistently been slightly below the forecasts.
When those forecasts include temps at Zero, +1, +2 C, the
very close proximity to the freezing mark can mean critical
differences in the type of precipitation. Being slightly lower
has meant that Tremblant has enjoyed Snowfall every time
the Sud, South Base has called for, and in some cases gotten,
rain.

Clinically, you need to be ready for anything, but each and every
time this has happened over the past 10 days, we’ve gotten snow
at Mountain Elevations. Some of it has been wet snow, but still
all snow. We think that’s what will repeat today.

If we do get a positive weather break, conditions should remain
at the same exceptional performance across all Groomed Skill Level
terrain. Otherwise, a couple of hours of drizzle is not going to hurt
anything significantly and traction might seem soft, and spring-like
for the afternoon.

The wind may be a factor. We have initial feedback from the Gondola
that the wind is a lot stronger than forecast.

Depending on wetness of any precipitation, vision may be an issue.

The use of a Descente Poncho is advised.

"Fingers Crossed” for the luck and good fortune for repeat today, that
gave us these exceptionally fine cruising/learning conditions yesterday.

As close as it has been to Zero C at base levels,
the snowfall at Mountain elevations, just enough cooler,
has generated extraordinarily beautiful scenery.

Atmospheric activity aside, the Skiing should
continue to be very fine. The new season is only
10 days old and we’ve had another extraordinary
start at Tremblant that way exceeds the 20 year
averages in both area and quality.

Forget The Gym... Go Skiing!
